Calgary to be Motorola’s first Android phone, more news on Moto
It looks like our ninja took it personally yesterday when we mentioned how eager we were for more info on Motorola’s Verizon-bound handsets. That said, consider us shut up. He swooped in with a few big updates that will definitely tide us over for a while — some good news and some bad — so let’s get right to it… First and foremost, the Calgary will indeed be Motorola’s first Android-powered handset. Some suspected it when rumors of a QWERTY-sliding Google phone from Moto emerged and it looks like that was a good call. The handset will likely focus on social networking to some extent and we’re pretty confident this could be a winner. The G1 and Magic are a bit, err, ho-hum and Samsung’s I7500 is basically just another full touchscreen phone. Moto could really knock it out of the park by introducing a unique, well-designed Android beast and the Calgary looks to be just that. We’re not yet able to confirm whether or not the Calgary is slated for Q2 as had been rumored regarding Motorola’s first Android offering.
More after the jump.

Now some bad news: The Flash and Inferno, each pictured above, have been canned. While the Inferno wasn’t really shaping up to be much of a stunner, we really wanted to see what Moto had in store for the Flash. The design is fantastic and it could definitely have translated to reality very, very well. Such is life however, and Moto is right to focus on the handsets it determines to have the most potential. Que sera sera.
Last up for the time being are a few tidbits surrounding a new handset in development at Moto — the Rolex. While little is known about it for the time being, our ninja tells us the Rolex is made almost entirely of hardened glass and it will sport the same display as the Aura. Sick. We’re not sure if this will be a mass-production unit or another pricey short run like the Aura but either way, we can’t wait to see it. A quick shot of the Rolex screen while we wait with bated breath for more:

are these concept photos or the actual device?
Could Motorola PUUUUHLEASE get rid of laser etched keys.
im confused. so is the calgary going to Verizon? and if yes will it still run android? as far as i know Verizon is not part of the OHA so therefore making an android phone on their lineup impossible.
@Armo No one has to be OHA member to release a phone. Joining the OHA is just showing commitment and marketing. btw no one said that there are no members allowed anymore and they are announced in batches, not every single one…
Eh, I’ll believe it when I see it. The way MOTO’s been cutting projects I could see this one disappearing as well, regardless of how much of an emphasis they’re putting on android.
Not only that but its already going to have to change significantly from the render. I think its could easily end up more sidekick slide and less like the render.
We’ll see. I’d love for this to hit VZW still.
agree with tande04. so many projects and so many people got canned.
Good. Finally moto+verizon giving us something to cheer about. Maybe they don’t “need” an iphone-killer to show that they’r in business…
This device will look NOTHING like the renders (well, at least the keyboard part)
I’d tell your ninja to get better sources.
Calgary is slated for Q3.
Flash and Inferno were cancelled about 2 months ago, and actually Inferno may come back.
Tell him that if he really knows anything find out about the 9-10 smartphones coming out 2H09 that run Android.
im really loving all these verizon rumors
iphone
ipad
zunish phone
moto calgary (android)
lies, this is NOT the first moto droid phone…
So this means its defintely a smartphone???
oh boy, almost a RAZR with a slider…give it up Moto, those days are long gone…
RAZR keys!
I’m pretty sure its “Que será será” not “Que cera cera.”
looks sweet, I really hope verizon drops a phone like this with android, touch, qwerty
I think it would be really popular. the g1 has already been fairly popular and it’s not even on a big network
I’m looking for a good upgrade from the original Q
What happened to the Qwerty slider handset called “Rush 2?” Wasn’t that one of the phones featured along with the Calgary in an earlier BGR post?
I posted the leaks. And those 10 android phones are all under 99 dollars and crap! Get your info straight.
While the Inferno wasn’t really shaping up to be much of a stunner”
is it because the ZN4 didnt do well?
i rather thought that its a good idea of having a touch-flip, Vcast on that phone is superb.
If the Calgary phone has any likeness to Calgary the Canadian city I expect something half-assed that may look pretty but fails expectations pretty solidly.
The ZN4 follow ups were cancelled because the ZN4 sold terribly (releasing just before the Storm didn’t help).
Rush will be out this year, the next one is a year away.
@HomoActingQueer, did you think that post was funny when you said it in your head?
Info, you sound jilted and agitated because the Calgary info got leaked. I got more info than what you surly posted. Wow 10 crap Android phones lol did you think that was funny when you thought it up in your head?
