Nokia announces 5800 Star Trek edition, complete with phaser

Nokia’s 5800 XpressMusic might have first appeared in The Dark Knight but as much as our Finnish friends love product placement, it looks like its first S60 5th Edition phone might be making another cameo on the big screen. Nokia has just revealed it will be releasing a special Star Trek edition of the popular touchscreen phone — which will be free on contract with Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile and O2 — featuring special Star Trek animated screen savers, three Star Trek wallpapers and eight exclusive Trek-themed ringtones. It also packs an exclusive phaser application but sadly, no teleporting capabilities. The 5800 Star Trek edition might not be able to beam you anywhere but all your Trekkie pals will surely be envious when you brandish it at the next Star Trek convention. Just make sure you sneak away to a corner when you use it to call your mom for a ride home.

    I doubt its going to be in the movie. It would be a bit 2009 in the 24th century.

    Even if it is it would probably end up getting covered by lens flare.

    I imagine its just like the Dark Knight Nokia or Transformers Versa. They throw a couple of ringtones on the sucker, add some pictures, and if they’re feeling nice give it a themed paint job. Doesn’t mean any of those were or are in the movie.

    I love Star Trek, but come on, who actually buys these theme phones? Are they going for little kids?

    Using one of these in public is like an alternative form of birth control.

    @tande04
    This Stark Trek, like the series and first 6 movies, are in the 23rd century. The Next Generation, DS9, Voyager, and movies 7-10 are all 24th century.

    And so I’m guessing this will only be released in Europe based on the providers listed aside from T-Mobile. Kinda stinks because I’d probably get one.
