Microsoft and Verizon reportedly cooking up an iPhone competitor

Just what the world needs… Another iPhone killer. If the Wall Street Journal’s report is to be believed, it looks like that USA Today story may have omitted a relatively important detail regarding Verizon’s “iPhone” offering — it might not be an iPhone at all. Citing an apparently different group of “people familiar with the matter,” the Journal indicates that Big Red is currently in talks with Microsoft regarding a project with the codename “Pink”. Pink will be a Microsoft-designed iPhone rival with a multimedia focus and, undoubtedly, a big touchscreen. According to the report, Microsoft’s iPhone-alike will also feature a tweaked version of the Windows Mobile OS with “new software capabilities.” While Microsoft is said to be involved with the design of the phone, a third party will build it. What do you think guys — can Pink possibly tide you over until an LTE iPhone drops?

Thanks, Mark!

    Dear Verizon,

You are retarded. First BlackBerry, then Apple, then Microsoft? You will try to make a deal with anyone, wont you? This isnt a Monte Hall show ya know…this is emotions and real people getting hurt in the process of you trying to find ANYTHING that is a “touch phone” that you can exploit as something better then the last. Stop trying to pit all these companies against each other and look innocent. You are like a school girl who talks shit about her friends behind their backs and then denies it. Get a life, stick to what you know (ie, LG shit phones) and go on your merry way. NO one likes you, and just cause you are bigger, doesnt make you better, it makes you slower to change, and more likely to lose in the end.

I HATE YOU TUBBY NETWORK BITCH.

    Love always and forever,

    ROGER A

Strange, but people don’t seem to realize how strong Verizon is performing without the iPhone. I hear these “Poor Verizon” and other Verizon taunts, but despite their search for an iPhone-killer and overall lack of stud phones Verizon remains the strongest cell provider in the US. They have extremely low churn and are adding more customers (without considering the Alltel acquisition) than their competitors. Let’s not even start on the quality of their network over AT&T.

Why then would Verizon want to go into a financially non-beneficial deal with Apple for the iPhone (considering what portion of the money earned Apple would demand like with their deal with AT&T) when they could develop a strong “me-too” device with someone else. This all make perfect business sense and jsut may have more of an impact than people may think..

What, like an iPod killer? seems as if everyone is chasing the iPhone killer like they were the iPod killer years ago. And I wouldn’t claim anyone has yet to produce even that? Although Zune may have come the farthest out of all the crappy gadgets people were buying. So if anyone has a chance, it might just be Microsoft? But they’ll probably screw it up! In order to just catch up they’ll have to innovate new technologies and ideas, not just copy Apples great ones. wait and see I guess?

What a crock! Does MSFT and Verizon really think people want a phone that will be a POS copy of the iPhone? Sure, I want a phone that will crash, freeze, be slow and delete my data for no reason at all. Add to that it will require weekly “security updates” and be guaranteed to screw up other apps and the operation of the phone within hours of those updates. Hey Verizon…You have the best network! Don’t trash your rep with those jerks in Redmond.

First mistake- they start calling it the iphone killer. If they come out with a Zune phone, it is going to be a failure just like the Zune is.
The fact that Verizon keeps trying to come up with an iphone killer just tells u how much they regret passing on the iphone.

Verizon actually added more customer than any other wireless carriers last quarter, They added 1.3 million customers whereas AT&T added 1.2 million. So as you can see Verizon is doing pretty well even without iPhone. You cant say the same about AT&T. Without iPhone AT&T would have done worse than T-Mobile.

Anyway, Any phone these days would love to release phone with Verizon. They have 85 million + customers and a wide coverage. That explains why Apple might be talking to Verizon. They don’t want to be the last phone manufacturer to have access to that vast number of customers.

BTW I am not a Verizon customer. No need to call me fanboy or anything.

Just imagine a device with all the Verizon crap ware + MSN live search as a default search engine = BIG FAIL, and on top of that add Mobile IE and you have a big train wreck.

I have to agree with the apple/ ATT fanboys here. Quit making “iPhone killers”. They don’t sell. You know what works? Your phones, since I left AT&T I don’t drop calls and/or not have reception. I am happy with that. Yes, a phone that makes calls, go figure.

    2 cents here:

I think if MS takes a full touch screen Zune HD, tosses in a phone radio, gives it some form of WinMo (email, threaded msg, multimedia, GPS) and keeps the garbage out of it, then I think it will be a great device. As long as it offers features that the iPhone doesn’t, or at least does the same stuff better, then I think whichever carrier picks it up (VZW according to this post) will have a winner. If it’s executed and marketed properly that is.

You know what I think is funny, I don’t think VZW or Microsoft dubbed this device as being the “iPhone killer”…I think the bloggers and the news article likes to call any new touchscreen phone that comes out an “iPhone killer”…if that’s the case the iPhone should be called the “Palm Killer” since they were one of the first companies with a touchscreen phone…people make it seems as if the iPhone is the best phone out there and everyone is going after it…

the only thing MS and VZW can do is produce a Zune phone(”pink phone”??). At least they won’t get sued for touch screen tech…or they would have been already for the Zune itself. Or just wait till AT&T contract is up with Apple and build a LTE iPhone(froget CDMA, will never happen). If the iPod vs. Zune is any indication, VZW/MS is fighting an uphill battle for an “iPhone killer”.

I’m not impressed…I was enthused about an iPhone “lite” using VOIP or even a media tablet… Unless there are MAJOR changes in the Windows Mobile OS interface, and considerations for Apple users I won’t be interested at all. Right now Windows Mobile OS is just too desktop like in design…and there is virtually no Apple integration consideration…

    William says:

the biggest blunder in history? Doubtful, last quarter Verizon still had 1.3 Million new activation, ATT had 1.6 Million, 60% were for the iphone. That is new activations, new customers. Remove 960,000 from ATT that went for the iphone and they 640,000 new activations without the iphone vs 1.3 million for Verizon. ATT has to give monthlies (thus lowering their receivable base per customer for each customer) for each iphone activated. Verizon doesn’t.

The verizon / apple deal didn’t happen for that reason. Now that Verizon does have the largest network, arguably the most reliable (overall, not every specific place) and Apple needs to continue to grow Verizon has a better bargaining position. The past two years have let the iphone mature into a product (it was great to begin with, but simple things like copy paste, bad battery life, etc) were hindrances or annoyances. With these worked out Verizon will get a better from the start and a lot of people will migrate to Verizon when the iphone comes. If it doesn’t they are sitting just fine with their numbers.

    Wow.

    A. “Amazing” to me that with the next iPhone release(s) and release of the Pre imminent, there is a “leak” of what VZW and MS are “cooking up”. Give me a break… losers.

    B. After two years of iPhone domination, we’re to believe VZW and MS are just now thinking about how to respond? Although considering the organizations we are talking about this is certainly feasible, I have a hard time figuring out how this “convenient” leak is really all that news worthy.

    In summary: suck it, losers.

PS yeah, I know… lots of “quotes”.
