Microsoft and Verizon reportedly cooking up an iPhone competitor

Just what the world needs… Another iPhone killer. If the Wall Street Journal’s report is to be believed, it looks like that USA Today story may have omitted a relatively important detail regarding Verizon’s “iPhone” offering — it might not be an iPhone at all. Citing an apparently different group of “people familiar with the matter,” the Journal indicates that Big Red is currently in talks with Microsoft regarding a project with the codename “Pink”. Pink will be a Microsoft-designed iPhone rival with a multimedia focus and, undoubtedly, a big touchscreen. According to the report, Microsoft’s iPhone-alike will also feature a tweaked version of the Windows Mobile OS with “new software capabilities.” While Microsoft is said to be involved with the design of the phone, a third party will build it. What do you think guys — can Pink possibly tide you over until an LTE iPhone drops?

Thanks, Mark!

Umm…is this the same “Pink” that was leaked over a year ago? For some reason I thought that project was dead when WinMo 7 was delayed…or replaced with some other new OS?

i think that if verizon really does want the iphone on its network it needs to stop trying to have an iphone killer such as the storm or even this “pink” project it supposedly has with microsoft. i mean seriously it looks as if verizon looks desperate and is trying to scrap for any possible iphone killer.

@Verizon Guy: I never got the impression that it was dead, just that we’ve gotten a wider look at its development.

Sometimes stuff gets leaked so early on in the development that when concrete stuff comes out it gets brushed off as ‘old’ when really shit like this just takes a long time to develop.

They were just shopping it to advertisers not to long ago.

now, does USA today admit that their wrong or do they stand by their story.???
    i hope the latter…..
folks, its pure speculation on both sides. i think that VZW is smart enough and have the resources to work on both on a ‘iphone killer’ and a contract with apple.

Are you kidding? I think the entire rumor string is tainted and 100% FUD. The iPhone isn’t the sum of a phone and its capabilities, but the fact that is was a game-changing design. Stop trying to mimic it and try to best it with ANOTHER game changing design. Try something radical and different for a change. What about haptic feedback on a flexible ultra-high resolution OLED touchscreen with Bluetooth 3 and WUSB support. Maybe even wireless charging. Maybe even N WiFi. And even some sort of fuel-cell battery.

    Really push the envelope.

I ‘almost’ think that VZW has finally heard the displeasure that people have over their phone selection.

Of course I could be completely wrong and this and the ‘iPhone lite’ are both going to come out with Java menus and red colored themes.

Wait a minute. I thought the Storm was the iPhone killer? Didn’t they release the document instructing employees in the ways that the Storm was better than an iPhone? And Sprint already killed the iPhone with the Instinct, didn’t they? It’s like they (VZW & Sprint) are saying that device X is the iPhone killer. Then they have another iPhone killer. If the Storm and the Instinct killed the iPhone, shouldn’t they not need another “killer”?

    I’m confused…

This makes more sense to me than an iPhone on verizon.Microsoft would be more likely to let verizon put their shitty software on it.

@joecurve: Yeah it seems like a bit of a stretch to say that USA today got this and the iPhone confused. I’m sure they are talking with both MS and apple. I don’t see why they wouldn’t be and I don’t think either company would be upset. AT&T still caries WM phones last I checked.

@MadMike: Yes. The iPhone design was a game changer but they really need to start pushing in other directions. I think you’re starting to see some of it out there. They’re still echoing the basic iPhone design but they’re actually starting to do some stuff that isn’t just a straight copy.

just think with all those Zunes that sold those customers will def. switch carriers to get a MS phone…hopefully both customers don’t show up at once. ;)

The only iphone killer will be the next generation iphone. Funny how Verizon had their chance with the real mccoy, but passed. Now they are a frantically grasping at straws to make up for probably the biggest blunder in their history. I wonder if the bone head suit at Verizon who made that call years ago still has his/her job.

The Storm makes a great paper weight or maybe a door stop, but that’s it.

This is exactly what MS needs to do..add phone features to the Zune..tiddy up the package and OS and could have a good phone/multimedia device. Forget about “iphone killer” business and make a good product.

Maybe VZW is doing this as a ploy to keep apple honest on negitations (not that apple has anything to worry about), just as Business Week mentioned about how Apple may be spreading these rumors with Verizon to make ATT nervous about getting another deal done and accepting less than they wanted.
