AT&T adds 75 new NY metro cell sites in 2008 and Q1 2009; notice any difference?

According to a new email blast AT&T is currently in the midst of sending out, the company has been hard at work in 2008 and through Q1 2009 improving its service in the New York metro area. In fact according to the email, the carrier added 75 new cell sites across New Jersey, New York and Long Island during the 15-month period. Specifically, AT&T lists the following areas as key improvements in 2008:

  • Along I-78 in Hunterdon County west of Exit 11 and between Exit 33 and I-287 in NJ
  • Aong the West Side Highway from 7th Avenue to West 10th Street in Manhattan
  • The Sprain Brook Parkway from Route 100C to 100 and I-684 near Goldens Bridge in Valhalla, NY
  • The Long Island Expressway near Exit 51 in Huntington Station, NY
  • Perrineville, Prospect Plains, Union Valley & Applegarth Roads all in Monroe Township in Middlesex County, NJ
  • Main Street and Ocean Avenue in Northport, NY
  • The Southern State and Sagtikos Parkways in Bayshore, NY

A few more areas are also listed as recipients of even more recent coverage improvements:

  • The NJ Transit line in Glen Rock, NJ
  • Todt Hill Road in Staten Island
  • Howells Road and the Sunrise Highway in Bayshore, NY
  • Greenwich Village from Washington Square Park to East 12th Street, Central Park South
  • The Upper East Side from East 82nd to East 91st Street in Manhattan

While we applaud AT&T’s continued efforts in the region, we’re still hearing from an unending stream of readers, colleagues and friends wondering what is going on with AT&T’s service in the NYC area. Of course people love to complain much more than they do praise so to be fair, we also talk to plenty of people in the area who live and die by AT&T’s service and seemingly have no problems at all. Consider this an informal third party survey — those of you with AT&T service in and around New York… How’s it hanging?

To be fair, I line up my HTC P3700 NAM (unlocked), My iPhone 3G (locked) and Nokia 5800 NAM (Unlocked) and I get different bars and coverage from phone to phone with the same SIM card.

Sadly I changed the Radio and ROM on the HTC and the service got worse. The Nokia gets the best service out of all of them

I love ATTs service. I only loose it in certain locations. Could be faster on my iPhone tho. But my pandora rarely shuts off due to service..

I commute from mid-long island to tiverhead daily. And to montauk monthly on all major highways.
    (their billing tho.. Another story)

Reception anywhere in the City is phenomenal with ATT. Never any dead spots and I always get full reception whenever I’m in an elevator or inside a building.

I have a bold, im in the city, staten island and jersey city and i get quite a few failed calls when i try to dial friends or even sometimes the VOIP lines at my parent’s place. even to another ATT mobile user (non iphone) i get the call failed issue in jersey city. So all in all, i havent seen any improvement, just a lot more problems.

I’m in central west Jersey (Lawrenceville) service is pretty good I’m an iphone 2G user. The problem I have is sometimes calls go right to voice mail without the phone ever ringing 5 bars of signal even with wifi on.

Never have issues around Wall St. or all the way uptown by Columbia Medical Center. Speeds might not be lightning, but better than EDGE. I have no problems with dropped calls or lapses in 3G coverage or signal strength. And I’m using an iPhone 3G :X

I live in the upper west side and work near the financial district. The service in the upper west side is ok (until I drop a call) near the financial district depending on the day time of the week if the sun is out, if Pluto is retrogade on the moon axis who knows. I personally believe that AT&T thinks of their coverage as “hey take a chance try and make a call”

I work in Midtown and I’m lucky if I get one or two bars of EDGE here on 41st St. Forget 3G. MIDTOWN! This is on my iPhone 3G. My old 8525 and Bold always had 3G connectivity. And don’t get me started on how many times I’ve got a notification that I have a Voicemail when the damn thing didn’t even ring/buzz. Insanely frustrating, at&t, and not cool.

right, its somewhat 2.5 that is available in about 7 metro areas in the US. the others are ‘crawling’ on 1.5, 2G

    @mw
All of these large companies try to push software with issues. And there is no bigger offender than Microsoft and the POS software they constantly try to peddle. WinMo is no exception to this.

3G in my neck of the woods with AT&T is awesome. Arizona. And the iPhone battery does suck with 3G enabled, but it is still better than the AT&T Tilt that is sitting next to me collecting dust.

Never had and significant issues with AT&T in New York that I can remember. I live in Chicago though and it is terrible! HSPA service is the worst and sucks the battery on my Tilt but the Edge service isn’t much better. I was on the bus the other day in the middle of Lincoln Park.. no bars. That is just ridiculous!

NEVER had a dropped call with VZW, the only place where it is spotty( -at worst ) is on the 6W, polisades pkwy, a very small section of it while my friends with att, sprint have dead handsets THROUGHOUT the hilly-pkwy

The BQE and Gowanus areas are indeed terrible and constantly call in to complain of it as a problem spot. I know just added a new tower right near the Brooklyn side of the Brooklyn Bridge.

I had AT&T, and had the iPhone. I switch to Verizon today and couldn’t be anymore happier. AT&T is the worse network in the US. Im happy with my BlackBerry on Verizon. I can auctually make calls and use the wb at fast speeds!

I live in Brooklyn. I dropped T-Mo because their service went downhill IMO. I had AT&T in 2003 and it was awful. They’ve come a long way (through the old AT&T and Cingular). I have AT&T now and I’m happy with it.

bullshit. I went to the new Yankee stadium and had full bars and 3G all the way in the upper section and all throughout the stadium. With that said, I still think at&t sucks, but no need to fill the internetz with bull!

    Jersey City, NJ
Specifically the area along the Hudson river, also known as the Newport section.
iPhone 3G reception is poor outside and non-existent inside the buildings along the river.
If you live/work in the Newport/Jersey City area don’t waste your money on an iPhone AND AT&T will NOT take a return because they claim there is service.
