AT&T adds 75 new NY metro cell sites in 2008 and Q1 2009; notice any difference?

According to a new email blast AT&T is currently in the midst of sending out, the company has been hard at work in 2008 and through Q1 2009 improving its service in the New York metro area. In fact according to the email, the carrier added 75 new cell sites across New Jersey, New York and Long Island during the 15-month period. Specifically, AT&T lists the following areas as key improvements in 2008:

  • Along I-78 in Hunterdon County west of Exit 11 and between Exit 33 and I-287 in NJ
  • Aong the West Side Highway from 7th Avenue to West 10th Street in Manhattan
  • The Sprain Brook Parkway from Route 100C to 100 and I-684 near Goldens Bridge in Valhalla, NY
  • The Long Island Expressway near Exit 51 in Huntington Station, NY
  • Perrineville, Prospect Plains, Union Valley & Applegarth Roads all in Monroe Township in Middlesex County, NJ
  • Main Street and Ocean Avenue in Northport, NY
  • The Southern State and Sagtikos Parkways in Bayshore, NY

A few more areas are also listed as recipients of even more recent coverage improvements:

  • The NJ Transit line in Glen Rock, NJ
  • Todt Hill Road in Staten Island
  • Howells Road and the Sunrise Highway in Bayshore, NY
  • Greenwich Village from Washington Square Park to East 12th Street, Central Park South
  • The Upper East Side from East 82nd to East 91st Street in Manhattan

While we applaud AT&T’s continued efforts in the region, we’re still hearing from an unending stream of readers, colleagues and friends wondering what is going on with AT&T’s service in the NYC area. Of course people love to complain much more than they do praise so to be fair, we also talk to plenty of people in the area who live and die by AT&T’s service and seemingly have no problems at all. Consider this an informal third party survey — those of you with AT&T service in and around New York… How’s it hanging?

Well I live on East 78th and have good AT&T phone and data 3.5G service on a Nokia 5800.

About a month ago I really didn’t have service in the basement of the Midtown Bloomingdale’s but now I get full service. I thought that was odd but now maybe I see why.

I definitely see the difference on Long Island (in the Roslyn/Great Neck area).

I swicthed to ATT from VZW in February, have an iphone now used to have a storm

With my storm, I could go 2 days without charging, iphone is flashing red battery by 5pm for me.

I turned off 3G, Battery lasts almost 2 days now and the mobile web browser looks the same to me.

Moral of the story, I bet ATT’s netwrok isnt really 3G to begin with.

At columbia university it’s flawless even in underground buildings…

at home in Fort Lee (NJ) it’s a little less flawless but still as good as verizon surprisingly…

This is old news. ATT 3 G service sucks. IPhone battery sucks using 3g. ATT coverage sucks. Is there any new news here.

All of the locations they mention on Long Island have noticeable improvements in service. In addition, I notice many more “H” locations (HSPDA) here on Long Island now too….good indeed!

If the service is like Chicago, it’s an issue with specific phones and not the AT&T service. I had an iPhone (and my wife does now), and we both had crappy reception in and around our house. Now, with a BB Bold, I get 5 bars in our house.

It’s the phones that suck (iPhone specifically – don’t get butthurt, fanboys).

ATTs 3G is pretty spotty in NYC. It’s always coming in and out for no apparent reason. Sometimes I’ll sit there and watch my phone switch in and out of 3G several times over the span of an hour or two. Ive noticed it mostly on the eastside, and often in a cab down FDR I’ll have full 3G to none. Its pretty bad

VZW has 3G service everywhere I go in NYC, even in any basement or udnerground area I go in to. The two services are not even close.

For me the worst time was last summer when the iPhone 3G first launched. You couldn’t even use 3G for the first month or so. Since then its getting progressively better. I haven’t had major issues.

Anyone using an Iphone with ATT is a Beta tester for both services paying top dollar for inferior service. I think I understand, there is no problem with a phone that has a battery that can barely last a full day and there is no problem with the incredible amount of dropped calls and there is no problem paying for and not getting 3G coverage. I think I understand. It’s all so clear.

Used to get terrible reception with AT&T when I lived in Staten Island, Queens had good reception last time I checked. Been with Big Red for a while now though as they were the carrier I got the most reception with in both places. Whis they would have done this sooner, I’d probably still have my iphone….although, I did make a killing selling it on ebay :-)

The AT&T coverage for me in NYC has not changed. I see no difference. Same number of bars. Their 3G is okay at best.

All 4 carriers do well here in NYC area. I know quite a few Tmo users and LOVE their service here in NYC metro area. No complaints on their end and love their G1, BB devices.

im not from nyc, i live in boston area
but i was there visiting and got perfect service, even in yankee stadium where some people said they had none. i think i went into alot of buildings as well and att still held solid for me. i still find the best iphone 3g speeds i get are in the theater district in boston, about 2.4 mbps and 500kbps up. i must say i found it better than than verizon in terms of dl speeds. i found my dare to go slower than usual.

I commute from Jersey City to the Upper West Side by car every work day and along my route there are several complete dead spots for voice calls. Along the West Side Highway there are a couple! On Washington Street between Laight and Vestry- just out of the Holland Tunnel is also a dead zone.
Im not complaining about some obscure area in the City but along the West Side Highway- a major thoroughfare of the City. What the hell is wrong with AT&T that can lead to this incompetence.

@Drew, I disagree. At least for 3G, Columbia U and Morningside in general there is essentially no service. People in my building with iPhones all go to one particular stairwell landing (4th floor) where they get one bar and thus can check voicemail, etc. Everywhere else they get SOS.
