Hands on with the new T-Mobile Sidekick LX
Last night T-Mobile held a private launch event for the upcoming Sidekick LX and your pals at BGR just couldn’t stay away. After all, T-Mobile most definitely knows how to throw a party. Amidst a packed house, terrific food and drinks, a handful of arcade games and a great soundtrack, the new Sidekick LX emerged and we got to enjoy some solid face time with the orchid-colored messaging machine. First things first — the display… is… ridiculous. You can stare at “854×480 resolution” on the spec sheet all you want but until you hold it in your hand you really can’t appreciate just how crystal clear and vivid the F-WVGA display on this bad boy is. Once you manage to avert your focus from the screen, you can move on to what is undoubtedly the most solid Sidekick built to date. Danger/Microsoft and Sharp did a fantastic job on the new LX; it’s slim and sleek, the rubberized feel is perfect and the keyboard is big and inviting. But we don’t want to get too deep into it right now — you know a full and thorough review is on its way. So without further ado, click through to enjoy some hands on pics of the unit complete with a first look into the LX’s social networking integration (Twitter, Facebook and MySpace) and a little taste of AIM image transfer.

Yay! Teenagers everywhere will be talking all day about the new Sidekick on their way to home economics class!
Great Pics! Thanks for sharing!!
I know the Boy Genius is rocking a Palm Pre on the down low.
Now back on topic the new sidekick LX it looks nice *yawns*
Whats the diffrence between that and the way adults got when the Jesus(Iphone) was released? Oh wait the “Adults” were showing of their look at me look at me I’m so cool phone. Now its sold at Walmart and Best Buy. I love it that happened.
@E,
The iPhone will always be looked at differently than the Sidekick. For one, it is the phone every manufacturer wants to compete against, but has always come up short. Developers around the world are flocking to it, and the ones that make apps for multiple platforms usually make the iPhone version more advanced than their Windows Mobile or Blackberry offerings.
The Sidekick? The platform nobody but tweens care about? And you say they are similar?
Sidekick, the best multitasking messaging phone in existence? Not everyone wants an iPhone, or a touchscreen phone.
No matter how you feel about the sidekick it’s still the best messaging device available. The AIM and the keyboard are untouchable … it really depends on what your needs are for a phone. Email and AIM are important to my everyday needs and the iPhone doesn’t cut it.
I had an iPhone and I love the interface but as a phone and messaging device, it’s useless. Basic features like copy, paste, text selection, MMS and undo aren’t available yet. They will finally be available when iPhone 3.0 comes out, but this way overdue. You can’t even receive notifications when someone sends you an AIM message. You’re better off with an iPod Touch.
Agree 100% with ya.
@geniuz
Agree 100% with ya. Had a 3G iphone and G1, but it’s email and IM apps didn’t compare to the sidekick. These are my 2 #1 apps I use, and the SK handles them the best of any device I ever used.
Good luck putting that behemoth in your pocket.
Yea I still can’t believe how crisp that screen is. Ridiculous is definitely the right word to use.
I had the sidekick 2
@Tron
Yeah for sure … I haven’t owned a G1 but I used a friend’s once and I wasn’t to sure about it. That’s why I didn’t purchase.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m definitely frustrated with the Sidekick OS being locked down and the lack of applications. There’s a lot to improve on still. Even with its lack of “cool” features it still works efficiently for what I need to get done. Sometimes I don’t need all the bells and whistles even though it’s sure nice to have.
The iPhone is hands down the best when it comes to applications. The interfaces are amazing. But that’s not enough to sway me back over to it. While I’m a fan of touch screen, I’m not a fan of typing on one. It’s something I was willing to deal with but not with the lack of intuitive features for AIM and email.
I wish it came with WiFi!
Um…all you people saying that the sidekicks are the best messaging/email phone ever…
have you ever heard of a device called a blackberry??
Geez…
I’m in no way comparing the phones. I was comparing how people with Iphones are just like the kids who have sidekicks. The sad thing about the people with Iphones is teh fact that they stuck their nose up in the air like they were special. You know the look at me look at me I have an Iphone and you don’t. It was funny how some people got pissed when it started being sold at Walmart and Best Buy. Get over yourselves your not that special.
@Joe,
That is why Sidekicks aren’t very popular anymore. RIM made a big push for BlackBerry in the consumer space and they are taking over. It is hands down the best messaging device out there. Sidekick had its place a long time ago … now it is worthless.
Sidekicks are not very popular now a days for good reason, and this new one is not going to save them.
@E,
No … not everyone that owns an iPhone thinks that. My BlackBerry is the best as far as messaging goes. NOTHING can touch my iPhone as far as apps go. The apps are what makes this thing special and more capable than any other mobile platform out there. It has more capability. It comes closer to a mobile computer than any other phone on the market.
@ Joe
Yes, I’ve heard of the blackberry. Every phone has something about it thats better then another. I would agree that the blackberry email is superior, but one huge factor for me is the size of the keyboard. I’m sure it’s something I could adapt to but every time I’ve typed on a blackberry I feel so cramped. The keyboard alone is enough to keep the sidekick.
And as far as AIM goes on a blackberry … In my opinion it still can’t touch a sidekick. BeeJive is cool but not close. I like that you can have multiple IM clients like Gtalk, etc. other then that I’ll pass on it.
BB is not the best at multitasking, Sidekick is. hand down.
@Samuel,
Multitasking with what? Sidekick can’t do much. It would be much easier to multithread something with limited capability than provide an entire infrastructure to support multitasking for a bunch of apps. Sidekick is not very popular you have to admit that. ANd you know what? It is never going to be once again. What is the market share on Sidekicks now a days? Is it 1%? 1.5? I seriously don’t think it is that high anymore.
Ok well for ME, the Sidekick is the best for what I need to get done. I’ve owned an iPhone but typing messages on the thing is a tedious task. I have never owned a BB, so I cant say much on that one. And of course you wouldn’t see an CEO of a big major company flipping out a Sidekick lol but it is not just popular with teens (for those who insist that its only for young kids). I am an adult who owns one and I know many other adults who own one so….Sidekicks are the best for me. All I can say is, stick to whatever works for you. And in all honesty, who cares how popular they are or the market share on them? All I know is, it works for me
