AT&T 3G network upgrades underway; 7.2 Mbps HSDPA ahead of new iPhone launch
By now it is painfully obvious that AT&T and Apple will announce at least one new iPhone model this coming June; heck, even analysts jumped on board with bloggers a few months ago in stating that a new iPhone model this Summer is imminent. Back in March, we ran through some exciting details laid out by an AT&T exec and among them was the note that Apple’s new handset would support faster HSDPA to the tune of 7.2 Mbps. Well here we are in April and Scott McElroy, VP of Technology at AT&T Mobility, has confirmed the company is currently working on software upgrades that will boost 3G downlink speeds to… You guessed it… 7.2 Mbps. Despite the fact that we’re lucky if we can get 400 Kbps in the New York area right now, AT&T’s current 3G network supports speeds up to 3.6 Mbps so the upgrades being performed will double that speed. We have to admit, we’re a little scared to think of what network performance is going to be like when the new iPhone drops and increasing download speeds isn’t going to help resolve current issues. It looks like we may be in for a bumpy ride leading up to AT&T’s migration to HSPA+ in late 2009/early 2010, and the subsequent launch of AT&T’s LTE network.

It’s going to be really interesting to see how AT&T network will react when Apple drops 3.0 and the network gets hammered with Push notifications, and people downloading MP3/Apps all at the same time.
Good luck to ATT, it sucks that they drastically cut commissions on the employees. But I supposed its to pay for these upgrades…
“Despite the fact that we’re lucky if we can get 400 Kbps in the New York area right now,”AT&T’s current 3G network supports speeds up to 3.6 Mbps”
thats precisely whats happening ATT telling you 1 thing and the fact on the ground is quite another. add to the fact that several ppl tested the speeds in a head to head matchup the STORM VS THE I-PHONE and the red-storm won handily.
I’m ready for it! Bring it on! I already have great 3G speeds here in Az, but I wouldn’t mind having 7.2
Crank it up att!

LOL, I get 1.9M down and 350k up already, that’s plenty fast!
Bumpy rides are to be expected with expansion like this. The initial EVDO Rev0 was nothing but a pain in the ass for Sprint and Verizon users everywhere.
I been getting 950Kbps down and about 300 up lately so they might be working on it, before i was getting 300Kbps down and not even 100 up.
when EVDO REV 0 started , the respective carrier didnt claim “fastest 3G network”
That sounded like apologism beatbuddy
They need to worry about getting the proper amount of bandwidth to the towers. Upgrading speeds to 7.2 does nothing when you’re overloaded already because of lack of capacity.
There is no such word as “apologism” [except in your buddy DavidLefThande's vocabulary], BitchBoy.
@joecurve: Don’t be so thin-skinned that marketing gets to you. *Every* manufacturer and carrier claims to be the best at what they do. Very few claims are wholly legitimate when fully examined.
This will be interesting…I believe the already exhausted network….will hit its capacity…when the new i phone drops…At&t customers prepare for a new pricing structure…..meaning more of your hard earned dollars….but you’ll look cool along side those 11 year olds with iphone 3.0…
^Right on cue, Queenie.
Welcome to last year AT&T.
So when can I put my iphone on Craigslist?
There goes another apology for the big 2, they have a good network where/when you can get it but nowhere near the claims in print and tv
^Ass -still- smarting from the lack of dignity and integrity at Sprint? Lashing out of irresponsible tantrums? Sad.

for a change, david thande is making sense here.
to the point though, verizon chief said in an interview lately (in reference to sprint) that you have to put in resources -$$$$$$$$$-to maintain the network, you cannot just sit by idle watching it collects dust.
but ATT decides to spend their capitol on pricey-greedy apple contracts.
@ back-to-beat-(DT)
from the two of them,BIG BLUE is the most misleading,
anyway, didnt want to get in the way of you 2, keep on going……………………..
^Where do you see that line-item on AT&T’s balance sheet? Oh … It doesn’t exist? Why didn’t you just say so?
What does Sprint getting sued have to do with att just now ramping up 3g? That’s right, since the apologies were lame it’s time to change the subject and throw a few insults in for good measure
You wanna talk integrity and then ask about the relevance? Vanna … Can BitchBoy buy a clue? … {What’s that, Vanna? … He doesn’t possess enough integrity-currency? … Well, doesn’t -that- explain alot …)
