Snag an unlocked Nokia E63 on the cheap from Dell

If you’ve read any of our coverage of Nokia’s E63 smartphone in the past, you likely know we’re not huge fans of this handset. Dubbed “E71 lite” here at BGR, the E63 features an E71-like form with the following downgrades: Plastic instead of metal, No GPS, a 2 megapixel camera instead of a 3.2 megapixel camera, a tiny unusable spacebar and no dedicated power or volume buttons. Boo. On the flip side of the coin however, Dell is now offering a special on unlocked E63s — likely because no one is buying them — that chops the price down to $198.39 with free shipping. If you’re looking to break into the smartphone arena with a slim entry-level handset at a good price, this deal might just help you pull the trigger. Then again, you could just wait less than a month for the E71x to drop via AT&T at $99 a pop. Yeah, that’s definitely what you should do.

    Mr. Back? I am just curious, if this is overpriced, where are you finding a fairly priced E63? Under priced? $200 for an unlocked smart phone is a bargain, regardless of who makes it or the features. For example: who has paid more than $198.36 for their last phone on a contract?

    If your purchase the E63, aren’t you allowed to utilize the $15 a month MediaNet service as opposed to the E71x which will require the $30 a month service?

    considering you would be paying $15 for ATT data, this is a pretty good deal for someone trying to save money.

    Boy Genius, as usual your half ass fucktard ‘review; is lacking, it is a 3G device and it does have Wi-Fi.

    Im so tired of you kissing Verizons & RIMs asses since they obviously kickback you some loot.

    Back when you were just a contributor, you occassionally hit the nail on the head. No, you just suck. Your CDMA Niagra ‘review’ was a fucking joke.

    Almost worth it for a backup or to use at work and while out fishing and/or drinking phone. I don’t like losing so many features as you would by using a cheap flip as a backup.

    You crackberry trolls. If you don’t like the device say something useful to back it up. This is an awesome deal for a contract free device that does a lot of things out of the box with no additional software. It has 3g, just not HSDPA. It is indeed an awesome backup/introductory smartphone with good quality build and 1500 mah battery.

    ^ @TrollInDrag:

    Compared to the e71(x), this is not that great a deal. All things are relative (especially in your cross-eyed, extended family ;) )

    The -Full- list of e63 deficiencies:

    * The E63 is nearly identical in dimensions to the E71 except for the depth – the E63 is around *33%* thicker than the E71.

    * The E63 has no side buttons for volume or voice recording. It’s also missing the E71’s IR window.

    * The E63 has a revised keyboard layout, adding a ‘/’ button on the lower row, shortening the space bar.

    * The E63 appears to have a slightly smaller dimension screen although it is the same 320 by 240 pixels as the E71.

    * The E63 lacks internal GPS.

    * The E63 does not support HSDPA data.

    * The E63 has the same 110 meg internal memory, but is shipped without an additional memory card (although a slot to add one is present).

    * The E63 has a 2MP camera versus the E71’s 3.2MP and has a fixed focus.

    * The E63 lacks the E71’s faux-leather slip case.

    While I’m not a fan of the E63, there is still a great value in it, despite all of your points, beatback. $200 for an UNLOCKED device is a silly price, considering what can be done with S60 even without all those features. Also worth noting, the E63 does add the newer software FP2 and a 3.5mm headphone jack, both of which are not on the E71.

    For those who asked, yes, you can use the $15 unlimited MediaNet data with this or any other unlocked S60 device. Versus the $30 data, that alone saves you $360 over the course of the 2 year contract that also comes with the E71x, so again, it really is a good deal for a budget smartphone.

    All that said, it still may be worth it to get yourself an unlocked E71 and call it a day. The extra $120 is well spent to get all the things that you don’t with the E63.

    No, it will not work on Verizon.

    While it’s not a bad value as a *first* smartphone for a young professional or student, it is what it is. I agree with jonnybruha that when paired with an inexpensive data plan, it provides reasonable value. However, I also agree that for that additional $120 you mentioned, a buyer can forestall being antiquated a bit better than with the e63.

    I wonder why ATT will charge $15 for data on this phone and $30 for data on the E71.
    Both phones use the same OS and are both smartphones.
