Sony Ericsson posts Q1 2009 loss of €358 million
Sony Ericsson announced its third straight quarterly loss this morning, shocking absolutely no one. The company posted a pre-tax loss of €358 million with handset sales plummeting 36 percent from the same quarter last year. Sony Ericsson’s gross margin also fell, shrinking to a mere 8 percent in Q1 2009; down from 29 percent in Q1 2008. Though abysmal, the results lined up with analysts projections and Sony Ericsson remained optimistic that it can ride out this rough economic climate. The joint company announced another cost saving program that will trim an additional €400 million from expenses but will result in the loss of 2,000 jobs. All is not doom and gloom however, as Sony Ericsson remains committed to the launch of its “Entertainment Unlimited” lineup of high end handsets which feature music, imaging, gaming, content services and applications. This lineup will include the hotly rumored Idou unveiled at MWC 2009 and another not-yet-announced handset expected to be unveiled on May 28th, 2009.

Well maybe if SE could get their phones to the market without taking such long breaks in between it wouldnt be like this.
And a little diversity would help. There’s like no difference between the G705,W705, and W715
They should have kept making cdma phones, same with nokia. regular joe shmoe still buys the free or 99$ phone when activating a new line. and ericcsson/nokia make awesome “free” phones. even though cdma is said to be an “ancient” technology it’s still around.
I agree as well. Similar to Nokia losing 90% this past Q1 2009 both SE and Nokia had the North American market share by the balls at one time but as soon as they snobbed CDMA/EVDO which they basically said “F” you Verizon, look at them now.
Those who stayed with CDMA/EVDO along with GSM/UMTS/HSPA is now at the top of the heap.
Now I can’t remember where I saw this, but apparently there’s a new qualcomm chipset that uses CDMA/EVDO Rev B/GSM/HSPA/LTE and Wifi all in a single chipset and is now ready for production.
Do you think SE or Nokia will even look at this? If they do, its too little too late. Apple is apparently looking into this along with RIM so they too can capture the huge CDMA/EVDO dominant marketshare in the U.S. and Canada.
I always liked the SE offerings. This is definitely sad news.
