So in a “depression” one product would sell less and be able to use that as an excuse but how then do you explain the PC growth during said “depression”.

Oh we are nowhere near a depression and if the public could have gotten the real news about the economy back in Sept, we never would have had such a huge sell off of stocks and people stopping paying their bills, companies wouldn’t have laid off as many people. But those who wanted to create political hay, ensured that the economic news was slanted to allow them to railroad the public. The GAO said in Sept, that the worst was over and that even without the billions and billions of dollars wasted in “stimulus” that the economy would bottom and begin to recover in the middle of 2009.

Shame that not a single major media outlet chose to cover that public report.

Inmy last 30+ years as a both a consumer and a professional in IT some things have not changed. Apple zealots still thinks they are great, PC’s still rule, and Apple market share is poor. I can get a PC configred anyway I want, much greater software selection and if I don’t want to be tied to a manufacturer just build it myself. If you don’t want all the bloatware, look at small vendors like Velocity Micro, Vista 64bit, necessary drivers, Adobe reader and NOTHING else but all the original CD’s and manuals. Stable, fast and no more expensive than an HP or Dell and way less than a MAC.

My next laptop will be a decent “PC” that will be stripped of it’s OS and replaced with Ubuntu. That way I get security and stability without having to pay the apple prices. $2000 for a 15 in laptop from apple seem way overpriced. I recently found a lappy with tons of ram, HD, great graphics card, beautiful screen, blu-ray, BT and more for under $1000. I understand this solution won’t work for everyone but I’m glad it works for me.

i would be really interested to see the usage statistics for cracked OS X installations, especially in the crappy economy. Personally, my next “Mac” will be a Hackintosh. Can’t justify spending that kind of money for what little I get. I need expansion, and Apple won’t give it to me unless i spend $2500 dollars. Sorry, think i’ll build a nice hackintosh that has enough PCIe slots for all my audio stuff. Havent had enough slots on macs since the PowerMac 9600.
It wont look as “cool” and i’ll spend more time maintaining it, but im tired of Apple sacrificing function for form.

Apple lost market share…

As in Dell sold tons of the little inspiron 9 thingys at 200 bucks. If you are going to include the netbooks in the count then of course Apple are going to lose market share. I mean you can buy nearly 5 of these things for the price of a basic MacBook.

However, profit is what actually counts, and Dell are in the dumpster at the moment. Good for consumers. For the companies not so good. Rim are selling tons of Blackberrys – tiz true – but how many are being shifted in the “buy one get one free” adverts they have been running on telly since Jan?

This is a wonderful talking point for M$ and it’s fans but it is a very short term view. Wave the flag and all – but let’s see where we are in a year’s time, eh?

Personally I believe apples are extremely over priced for what you get. Especially in this market people want and need cheap. PC’s are the best solution to this problem. As to Evilhomer’s socialist ideas about wealth distribution from the rich…this is no solution. The poor are poor for a reason and I can bet that %95 of it is not caused by the rich but by their own personal circumstances.

@Frank: I am 43 years old and manage the IT for a large company. None of our mommies and daddies have ever bought any of our Macs. I’m not sure how you think that “tweens and college kids” are Apple core consumers. Most of both have little or no money at all. And if mommy and daddy ARE buying those devices, would that make THEM Apples real customer?

I’m sorry your mommy and daddy didn’t buy you a shiny, new Apple, or pony, a new car, or whatever else you haven’t been able to afford in your life, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a market for it. It just means that sales are down everywhere. Even on the cheap crap you buy.

Maybe the fact that 99% of Apple ads lately are for iPhone/iTouch showing – games and little apps. Yeah when people are cutting back and looking for value and things to help them thats what you market.

Doesn’t help the fact that Apple’s core audience (tweens / college kids) don’t have mommy and daddy to buy them cool Apple products due to likely one or both of them got layed off and if/when they buy a pc your damn right COST will be the biggest driving factor.

Perhaps everyone does WANT to have shiny Apple products but with the current economy struggles they realize they don’t NEED them and cheaper alternatives are a valid option until things get better.

Being in Canada, you not getting the first hand view of what’s going on in Corporate America. Companies of all types are stagnating, cutting back, laying off, and some even going under. It’s not a shocker that Apple is pumping out excitement at breakneck speed since many here now cannot afford the higher end toys and have to SETTLE for those cheap laptops.

You see, the media and our current government administration is vilifying money making companies and the people who run them. You see, if we make the “have nots” in this country hate the “haves”, the “have nots” can, in better conscious, take away what the “haves’ have via taxes, and spread that out amongst themselves. This should work well until the “haves” money runs out. Then we can just print and borrow more.

Of course, being in Canada, I’m sure you already understand the concept of very high taxes.

Sure, they are helping to sell HP’s low end laptops, but not doing a thing to sell anyone on using Vista. Additionally, PC’s sell cheaper because some of the cost is subsidized by the excessive amounts of bloatware that is pre-installed and takes forever to uninstall.

I actually think it’s impossible to remove all traces of Norton and AOL from a PC.

So yeah, the MS ads are working….. FOR HP!

i am a mac owner, i have used macs for the past 6 years, i bought a mac last year, and 1 month later they came out with newer mac machines.

So my 2800 was worth a damn machine.

I am using my macbook pro to type this as well. Why do i use it? Cause i am in the graphics business, thats the only reason why.

To all those mac and apple lover boys (and girls)… get over yourself…

Macs suck…i have read soooo many comments..oo macs dont get viruses..macs dont get this and that… lol you guys sound like little kids.

Macs do crash, and it is possible for them to get viruses..

sigh get over yourself, get out of your mac cult.. its just a computer..

Well, no surprise there regarding apple. The company has gone in remission in Jobs’ absents. No new products, no new anything. Not even a sign of a pulse. Since november, there’s been no major development. Okay, Iphone OS 3…oh yey, lets all get excited. It’s still not a BB and apple seems to have lost focus with the iphone. At launch they appeared to have such confidence in the product that their must have a been a four year ‘develop & implement’ plan behind it. In the the last two years they’ve added the copy and paste function. Right on.

Their hardware is stalling as well with minor updates being rolled out in March!!!!…Major hardware updates and full blown product launches have always been rolled out in March and November. Minor updates like ram and HD updates are done in August for the back to school season.

Something is wrong at apple. I’ve been intensely watching this company since late 2003 with buying apple stock in 2004 because the company was fearsly controlled and very well organized and i don’t see any of that today. it’s way too quiet over there and i don’t like it. No new innovations in 5 months….definitely unlike apple. And right now, it’s the most perfect time to begin thinking, planing and acting ’cause…at least up here in canada, everything is starting to turn around. Real estate is up. Car sales are way up (non american ). Film industry is 2 % up but whatever, at least something..lol. The tsx on the average is up by 50 points a day. So not bad. But apple needs to wake the f–k up, fo sho.

So far, 1975 and 1982-1983 saw worse unemployment, and lower earnings increases (and even decreases). This is a significant recession, but it certainly isn’t a depression.
