Palm’s new handset: Pre-mature hype?

There are many who would argue that Palm’s future success rides on the shoulders of of webOS, if not the Pre itself. While it most certainly seems like an exciting device, there are plenty of skeptics out there. Even those who were lucky enough to parade around with their units weren’t that impressed when they first got the handset. A recent survey conducted by ChangeWave Research is now showing that prospective smartphone buyers are looking to RIM or Apple first — of 4,292 adults surveyed, only 4% showed interest in purchasing a Palm Pre according to the poll. The most popular choices were BlackBerry, getting 37% of the vote, and the iPhone with 30% of the surveyed group. Add to that the fact that Sprint will be the Pre’s exclusive carrier and you have 1% of respondents who said they would be willing to switch carriers. Of course we don’t know how ChangeWave found its test group and we trust you guys much more — how many of you are going to pick up the Palm Pre, and are willing to switch carriers to do so?

If you poll the amount of iPhone users, you will find maaaybe 5% use it for itunes. Serious musci listeners will get a much larger drive to store and access itunes. It is why the new iPod is moving lsower than thought: it doesn’t have a high enough storage capacity. The only market that uses a lower storage capacity are children -teens-. For iphone, this is a much smaller market than the 20-40 crowd who will use an ipod a proprietary even if they own and iphone. I will keep my Pre right next to my iPod.

Taking away the off topic stuff this spot alone shows there is something to the talk, twelve pages of responses in 4 days. Even if half of this is silly arguments you can’t help but see a diverse group wanting this and that’s mostly because the smartphone market is growing. The new hotness in that market may help

I think surveys of this type are a little unnecessary. Everyone will have a different situation, so everyone’s phone needs will be different. I don’t travel out of the US, so I have no need for global service, but the million-air-miles businessman/woman in New York or Los Angeles (or wherever he/she is) will use that service often, thus switching to Sprint will not be beneficial for him/her.
It’s my opinion that Palm was smart coming to Sprint exclusively. Think about it…had they gone to ATT, the phone would probably have been overlooked by the iPhone or any other smartphone ATT carries. At least this way, they get some more recognition.
I’m with Sprint now and will be buying a Pre.

I switched from Verizon to Sprint a few years back and could not be more satisfied. Sprint has great service, prices, and finally great phones. I’m in for a new Pre.

All that’s left to know now is exactly what kind of stipend do you get paid by BG to continue posting your vitriol on an otherwise mediocre site? Figure that’s the only reason that all the calls for your banning have been ignored.)

The exclusivity ends because it didn’t meet numbers and a crippled vzw one comes out, maybe t mo but Jobs Co. will have a fit if att gets it

And, my answer to this is, “Farb now the Glimrod.” TXT speak does not communicate universally. If we are to use devices such as computers and smart phones to speak, I think its more appropriate to remember the rules of grammar and spelling. Time to deliver meaning, folks, and cut out the Valley-speak and get on with having a conversation. I -think- that most of us passed English 101 in college, or at least, high school.

Not a problem, Don. Its just a little easier to read succinct language… BTW: I’m guilty of being obsessed with the pre-phone myself. Hope I’m not disappointed. Time will tell.
