Palm’s new handset: Pre-mature hype?

There are many who would argue that Palm’s future success rides on the shoulders of of webOS, if not the Pre itself. While it most certainly seems like an exciting device, there are plenty of skeptics out there. Even those who were lucky enough to parade around with their units weren’t that impressed when they first got the handset. A recent survey conducted by ChangeWave Research is now showing that prospective smartphone buyers are looking to RIM or Apple first — of 4,292 adults surveyed, only 4% showed interest in purchasing a Palm Pre according to the poll. The most popular choices were BlackBerry, getting 37% of the vote, and the iPhone with 30% of the surveyed group. Add to that the fact that Sprint will be the Pre’s exclusive carrier and you have 1% of respondents who said they would be willing to switch carriers. Of course we don’t know how ChangeWave found its test group and we trust you guys much more — how many of you are going to pick up the Palm Pre, and are willing to switch carriers to do so?

Sprints network is fast. My friend has AT&T 3g phone and my Sprint HTC touch can access the internet a lot faster than hers. Apple should have gone with Verizon and Sprint for the I-phone. AT&T constantly has billing errors and problems, you call up for the same thing 4x and get a different answer each time. AT&T blows. I was AT&T ever since they were PAC-Bell with the credit card sized sim card. When they became Cingular, I was having so many billing problems I had to threaten to report them to the PUC if it happened again, sure enough it did. They let me out of the contract without a ETF. I went to Sprint and have been happy ever since.

I’ve been a sprint customer for quite some time and I have never had a problem with their network. I can’t wait for the Pre. From what I’ve seen and read it should be a good match. I was in Baltimore a few weeks back and people were talking about this 4g network they have.

As a (Cell-Life) time customer of Nextel, I can’t wait to upgrade to ANY more-feature-rich phone. I’ve been through the ringer with Sprint, since the merge. And I have seen their improvements across the board. In Los Angeles, the service is equal to, or exceeding the competition. Sprint is fighting back, and they have earned my loyalty. I realize, the iPhone, appears to be the platform of immediate choice and has the potential to be cutting-edge, for a long time. Still, I would never do business with AT&T, ever again. The hatred for this corporation goes back to the “Western Electric” Days, and the monopoly they abused for so long. Not to mention, the “Slamming” they practiced, without mercy to their victims. (Ask and old-person.) Even today, they are overpriced and undervalued for my taste. If the iPhone were with any one else… it would be an easier choice. It remains, their cash-cow, and I don’t see them giving it up, any time soon. Sprint, without argument, has the best plan, with their $99 everything option. The Pre, is very intriguing! Yes, I will switch over from Nextel to the parent company, once the Pre, has delivered, during the shake-down cruise. If not, I’ll let the BB Storm or Bold, mature. And with my eyes watching the Lucky-Goldstars, Samsungs, and HTC’s compete for the market! Motorola and Nokia, lets see what you’ve got?

    Sprint/Pre…is a go! (For now)

I’m getting a Pre just to get rid of my HTC Touch Pro. Sure, I’m already with Sprint, so that’s easier for me to do, but I’m just praying it’s less laggy than the HTC.

What is *truly* telling about these comments is that 70%+ of responders plan to get the Pre when it comes out, some (more than I expected) even dropping AT&T and coming over to Sprint, iPhone be damned.

The survey is total bunk, Sprint/Pre FTW!

I had ATT, was Not happy with the data service. UMTS is sparce at best. ALOT of dropped calls in SOuthern California with ATT. Verizon was a welcome change for me. CDMA is way better than GSM/UMTS anyway. I will switch to Sprint for the Pre. The 4G network is fast and upcoming 4G is blazing fast. Clearwire is doing the 4G build all over right now. They built out Vegas and are currently walking sites in So. Cal. Honestly I can’t wait t see this phone !

Have had Sprint for 6 years, 13 phone lines right now. Blackberry Curve, several old LG types, plus rumour and fusic, Instinct, Sanyo, Palm and Samsungs. We all get a variety of signals in our own office. Some won’t even work here. Only consistent one is the Blackberry. Would like to try the Pre, but don’t want to sign up for a bunch of new 2-year contracts to make it affordable.

I switched from AT&T for the Centro when my old Sony Clie died. I’m a big Palm OS fan, so I’ll be an early adopter of the Pre, regardless of how lame the name is.

    Philip says:

FYI: Pre will sync with outlook, using MS Exchange. This info was released when Pre was announced. If you are interested in a two way sync, a company called CompanionLink will offer a two-way solution using Google Contacts and Calendar as a secondary.

I’m not sure if the lastest versions of the Palm Desktop will sync, but I used a transfer program to move (back up) my address and calendar to outlook, last year. I’m an old user from back in the Pilot days. I haven’t used a Palm device in a couple of years. This Pre will bring me back.

There is an app that will proxy both the old Palm skin and run some old Palm programs on it. However, I’m not sure most of the folks on this board are interested in that.

The Palm Pre has a lot of research into it and a couple of ex-Apple executives that help boost the innovation aspect of the device. It blew the folks away at the CES in January. And if none of that impresses anybody….it’s got a REPLACEABLE BATTERY!!!

I have been with Sprint for many years now. They have a cheap data plan and the service has always been reliable for me. I have been a big windows mobile fan for quite a while, sporting the Mogul. I like how Windows Mobile is very customizable and has many applications available for use. I am looking forward to the Pre. It looks like it would be an excellent upgrade from my Mogul. I hope it is not priced too high, though. I hope they leave room for customizability on the Pre. As for the comparable BlackBerry Storm, I know people who have one and they complain that it runs slow. I saw it for myself. The iPhone looks good, but is still lacking IMO. If the Pre is as “snappy” as they claim, I think it’s a winner. Oh, and it would be great if it is upgradeable to 4G when released. Would be silly if it were not.

I’ve had Sprint for about 9 months now and completely love their service. I’ve also had various phones, from Nokias and Motos to Blackberries and currently a Q9c. Haven’t been impressed by the BB, but haven’t been with the Q either. I’m definitely on the list for a Pre when it comes out.

    Yes, Yes, Yes

The ability to actually multi-task and not having to be an inmate to the iTunes jail are just starters.

I have an iPhone and while I really do love it, I will not hesitate to switch to Sprint or the Pre. Sprint, unlike AT&T will not (from what I have read at least) be upcharging its users simply because they are using the Pre. The iPhone is on its own special little plan.

I am very geeked about the Pre and just hope it goes beyond the hype.
