AT&T becomes victim of sabotage in Northern California
Fiber optic cables are typically well-protected from damage or anything that would sever them. Early on the morning of April 9th however, fiber optic cables belonging to AT&T were cut and it was no accident. Whoever cut the cables knew exactly where they were going and what they were cutting as equipment was required to lift manhole covers and cut through thickly coated and covered wires. If the vandals responsible for this were targeting AT&T, they must have missed the fact that Verizon and Sprint also relied on those cables and were affected by the damage, too. Landlines, cell phones and Internet connections are affected – including the ability to make 911 emergency calls. A spokesman for AT&T said, “Clearly, we have some vandalism. Someone purposefully and deliberately cut the wires.” No one knows when services will be restored and AT&T is offering $100,000 for information that leads to the conviction of these criminals (you can call (408) 947-7867 or (650) 802-4423 with any information you might have). As of this morning, AT&T reports that services have been restored.
Thanks, Jess.

Likely someone part of CWA who is pissed the contract has not been signed yet. Maybe I’m wrong but there are a lot of pissed of people in the union right now and pointing the blame at AT&T.
For those in the union, double check the economy. I would love to have a free ride on my benefits too but that passsed years ago.
Maybe there was some robbery or something and this was a way to keep the alarm from sending a signal. Most alarms send cell phone signals as a backup if the land line is cut, but this damage looks like it would have taken that out as well.
So i guess the next time At&t has “Another” outage they can say…
“Oh, someone probably cut our wires again…”
I bet it was t-mobile
Two words: union thugs.

Hey anti-union jackasses… it was union employees who restored services. There are plenty of pissed off CWA union members who want to hang the idiots who did this if it was done by CWA union members.
three letters: C W A
Personally I’m a non-union supporter, but only because too many union members are using unions as an excuse to be lazy. Additionally I also think that if companies would stop mistreating those who aren’t lazy and actually wanna work and offered them benefits, then we would have no need for unions.
As for the fiber cuts, this exact same thing happened when ATT bought SBC.
Unions typically just slash tires and threaten union members who don’t fall in line. This isn’t their style.

I believe something similar was happening when Telus was on strike a couple years ago..
That’s really messed up. I hope they find the morons that did this.
Unions are awesome, nothing like sitting in a 40 hour a week lock-in, spades, bingo, and sqaure pizza for lunch.
I just hope they were wearing protection
lmao
On a lighter note. I get a laugh when fiber is confused with wire.

What an idiot
Well then, get the rope……
I think that guy needs his nails cut
@ JB…LMFAO!!! I’m still laughin hahahahahahahahaha! Good one. +1 for you sir
fibers are not all that different than a cable in the sense of their function…. they transmit data… also SBC bought ATT not the other way around..

i’m sure glad there was a pic to go with that comment.
It was probably just a pissed off AT&T subscriber. He was pissed because of the high price for an Iphone plan and the fact you have to pay $30 for a data plan. Plus no text messages are included.
I bet this was in conjunction with a major robbery.
To anyone who would reflexively blame CWA members for this vandalism – it may turn out that you’re correct after an investigation, but I wouldn’t bet on it. In a situation like this, it makes obvious sense to suspect that an employee would be the most likely person to have the inside knowledge to commit the crime. But telecommunications is a bit different in that phone phreaks (think old school computer hackers) have been amassing detailed insider knowledge about these systems for 40-50 years, often see themselves as outsider hero/avenger type figures, and live for these kinds of pathetic pseudo-Mission Impossible exploits. Blaming trade unionists (who also rely on this infrastructure for their livelihoods) without solid proof is irresponsible and not quite the slam dunk that you might think.
Fucking with the communications of any kind in this country is a federal crime too, with the direct connection to a national security. And if AT&T (and Gov) finds who did this, those idiots might be considered terrorists and shipped out to a Guantanamo Bay
