Official firmware with GPS unlocks are on the way for Saga, Touch Pro and the newly released Diamond as well.
Will there be an official release by verizon or samsung? I don’t want to have a brick after trying this.
its amazing!!! and very easy to do….
on another note… the actual release date for the firmware is May 11th!
Any word on when the 9630 will be released?
I assume the GPS unlock still limits you to VZ’s Craptastic Navigator. VZW pisses me off.
Actually when vzw tends to actually let WinMo go full GPS, atleast in leaked roms, my old 6800 had unlocked gps and I used TomTom
What part of unlocked did you not understand. If I’m wrong sorry but does unlocked mean you don’t have to use verizon nav
GPS unlock means unlock. you won’t have to use vznavigator. it may be a battery killer though, haven’t heard. I am much more excited about getting custom Roms made from this. like win 6.5 theme. yaaa
Posted from BGR Mobile (iPhone).
Beeve, the GPS unlock does not require you to use VZNav. Confirmed working so far are Google Maps, WLS, Garmin XT, iGo 8, and I believe TomTom as well.
i upgraded my omnia today and couldn’t be happier. the scrolling is much smoother and now there’s the unlocked gps. so far so good.
lmao! ^
My Blackberry 8830 unlocked the GPS when I updated (using US Cellular OS update) the OS, but I can only use the native maps. Why can’t I use Google Maps? Oh wait, I know…Verizon.
I have no idea why you can’t use Google maps when my dad uses it on his 8830 BB. BB were the first to be unlocked. Now we are unlocking all phones.
This is just another sad WinMo joke … right?
Beeve, you better shut the fuck up! I’m tellin you, you better.
wow, i was just telling my friend at vzw that i was going back to att in june if a unlock gps was not released. just completed update last night, goggle map and windows live work fine, but weather bug widget can not find any cities at all. oh well, maybe the official update will fix problem.
I can use Google Maps, but only with triangulation. This makes apps like Poynt just another phonebook. What would keep my GPS from working on my native map and not a 3rd party?
@ Beeve
You’re using a US Cellular update on your VZW blackberry and you are complaining that VZW is the problem. You are an idiot.
Maybe if you used the VZW updates on your BB you would have ulocked GPS like me and everyone else.
What’s with the “idiot” dropping? Maybe one should know of what they speak.I have been waiting patiently for Verizon to offer an update for the OS. I have seen all of the GSM 88xx phone updates come and go, and saw the Sprint 8830 update come and go. US Cellular’s just came out so I finally caved. Why it takes Verizon so long to get an update I can’t tell you. But this “idiot” thinks it might be akin to why VZW is just now putting out the HTC Touch Pro. They are spending to much time trying to control the software that they are losing out on the New Hotness. Will we see the new Omnia HD on Verizon? Not at first is my guess. Oh, and I am sure that my GPS is not working with Google Maps.
@ Beeve: There was never an “unlock” for the BlackBerry 8×30 devices–4.5 firmware only added GPS to the native BlackBerry Maps application.
In order to do Standalone GPS on Verizon’s network, you need an MSM6800 chipset or above (for support of simultaneous EV & GPS)–the older BlackBerries all use MSM65xx.
Does anyone have the specific instructions on how to do this? I am worried that I will fry my phone and of course I dont want to do that.
Thanks Verizon Guy. I haven’t heard that yet. Makes sense. I’m obviously an “idiot”.
Yes Beevis, you obviously are an idiot. But at least you know it.
“I assume the GPS unlock still limits you to VZ’s Craptastic Navigator. VZW pisses me off.”
ACTUALLY NO that’s the WHOLE REASON for the UNLOCK so you are NOT stuck with verizons navigator. which I’m assuming you’ve never used much? because even thou you have to use it. it’s a VERY GOOD Navigator. least in my neck of the woods. it works better than my wifes GPS in her car !!!!! but yeah i’d use a different one that was FREE with an unlocked GPS..
Same thing with the Weather bug for me.
I wonder if it’s working for anybody?
