New Sidekick clears FCC, T-Mobile 3G in tow

Sidekick 2009, Blade, Sidekick LX 2009… Call it whatever you want. The bottom line is that a handset thought to be Danger’s upcoming Sidekick redux just made its way through the FCC approval process. And by “thought to be”, we mean it is. If the Sharp PV300 manufacturer/model number combo isn’t enough for you (Sharp Sidekick model numbers start with PV), the label clearly states “Powered by Danger” which can only mean one thing — Sidekick. With that in mind, the most important takeaway from the FCC documents is without a doubt the presence of AWS 3G, the 1700 MHz spectrum 3G used by… Come on, you know this… Yes sir, T-Mobile. Rumor confirmed. So what do you think, T-Mobile folks? Shiny new Sidekick, NetBSD, 3G — you know you want it.

The G1 will outsell this phone. They’ll be about the same price I’m guessing, the target age range is about the same, and the data package is the same. UNLESS, Microsoft has done some serious upgrades to the software/web browser/email the G1 will outsell this 4:1

I don’t understand Microsoft’s decision about taking over the DangerOS. It doesn’t make sense at all. How does this help Microsoft at all. The only benefit I could see is a CE or WinMo based sidekick (which makes my heart flutter a little bit).

Well I know why MS bought Danger’s OS… it’s because WM sucks and they wanted at least one OS that didn’t crash every five minutes

    @ Eric

Microsoft never “took over” the Danger OS ever lol. All they did was acquire Danger and from my understanding, it was for the purpose of having use and/or understanding Danger’s back end service and OS. WinMo projects have always been seperate from Danger and I think they always will be hah.

Ok, I have loved all my sidekicks, but cannot use them as a phone for one reason…..t mobile has a crappy signal at my home and office. So does tmo add
voip access (UMA I think they call it)? No, they add a frequency that is even less available than their crappy edge signal. What the hell T-Mobile? Why must I use this lousy, crash prone, impossible touch board piece of crap Iphone, when I want a sidekick. Just get rid of the whole dang sidekick line, if you are going to keep doing stupid things with it! Who are you asking your market research questions of, the gangsters that use sidekicks? Of course they want “3Gs” they think it means 3 more members for their club……

LOL. That gangsta remark was so true. The kick used to be for geeks, now it’s for n:ggas. If they cancelled prepaid sidekicks they would lose their entire customer base.

hahaha it looks like this post attracted all the dumb “n:ggas” that were out in hiding for a while. This phone needs to come back to the geeks, seriously. Depending on how this phone turns out, I dunno most likely I may just wait till June for the new iteration of the iPhone.

Say what you want, I think the Sidekick brand is awesome. IT’s a shame T-Mo haven’t really made the most of it in the UK. That said, I would love for it to still be released over here.

If not, looks like I’ll be hitting up a WinMo device maybe.

    @ 3 Bar:
“No, they add a frequency that is even less available than their crappy edge signal”
Hello… you heard of this thing called the FCC, right? Government? Business models… applications… general red tape… analysis… etc. Yeah, T-mo just woke up one day and said “All other 3G phones use 1900 band, we’re gonna shove this splintered stick up our ass and use 1700″. Do I think it’s crippling for T-mo? YES. Do I blame T-mo? NO. Do I blame T-mo for taking so g*d damn long in implementing a 3G network that they got stuck with the ‘other’ frequency? YES.

“The G1 will outsell this phone. They’ll be about the same price I’m guessing, the target age range is about the same”
The G1 is marketed as T-mo’s answer to the iPhone (yes, yes, not even close, I know)… so it’s targeted at EVERYBODY. That’s why T-mo is keeping the Sidekick… that’s the phone they are marketing for teens. It’s about the most ignorant shit ever to compare the G1 to a Sidekick. It’s only similiarity is a damn full QWERTY keyboard. So how come no one compares the Wing or another QWERTY device to the Sidekick, because apparently thats the only common trait people go on when comparing.

    kicker says:

I hate to burst all of your bubbles but I have had the sidekick since 2001 and it was the first phone with
    real and easy Internet browsing
    good push email,
    The best Im client
An app store, yes a Real app store
And prolly the best and easiest user interface ever created..
Oh and the kick was the very first phone that saves every singe item in your phone on a backend server. Email pics contacts calender and all
They have slowly gotten behind in the world of cell phone technology. And they began marketing the device to black and Hispanic project trash. I have since gotten rid of my lx and now have this iPhone. And guess what ,
    the keyboard sux,
The battery last 6 hours tops
    the Instant messenger is crap
    The apps get old quickly,
    The email sux
No backend server unless u pay for the extra mobile-me for like $100
    No video record.
    iTunes sux ba11s
    And the keyboard sux
Did I say that the keyboard sux
    And the battery sux a$$.

Any way if danger was smart they would make a line of sidekick phones, each one geared to a different market segment. Adults, teens, power geeks, and the average joe. Apple needs to do the same, it all about platforming now. Don’t they get it. I might drop this iphone for the next good android phone. I tested one for 2 weeks an it’s almost identical to the iphone. But it has a better keyboard and removable battery.

    Robert says:

hmm, a teen phone you say? sure it has myspace and photobucket etc. but it also has email, text messaging, picture messaging and web browsing which will be at 3G speeds. It has a beautiful screen, an ok 3.2 megapixel camera with auto focus so, this sidekick lx 09 has plenty to offer for adults. It also is going to be thinner than the current lx so it is even more desirable than before for those who shy away from larger phones. enjoy fellow sidekick users.

I’ve operated them all.. And the sidekick has the most user friendly OS. If you get jump shortcuts mastered, things become extremely easy. I don’t even have a computer because I have a sidekick. Just think, when the 09 is video enabeled I can watch pr0n on red tube. Hella stoked!

Oh and iPhone users, I’ve seen you trying to type and drive. Fail.
