Bono/U2 to be let loose in RIM’s labs — could a U2 BlackBerry be in the works?
If you’re one of those people who hates it when celebrities meddle with your phones, you might want to skip this one. We’ve known for about a month now that U2 has partnered up with RIM for U2’s upcoming “U2 360″ World tour, but according to Canada’s Globe and Mail, there might just be a bit more to the RIM/U2 deal than a bunch of BlackBerry posters and SWAG at concert venues. When asked about the partnership, Bono had this to say, “I’m very excited about this. Research In Motion is going to give us what Apple wouldn’t — access to their labs and their people so we can do something really spectacular.” When asked if this meant that there is a possibility of a custom BlackBerry app that would allow the band to communicate with their BlackBerry-toting fans, Bono only responded with “you’re not far off.” Now, we’re not ones for unsubstantiated rumors at BGR, but was Bono trying to hint at a special edition BlackBerry loaded with U2 content much like 2004’s U2 Special Edition iPod? Perhaps a Product RED BlackBerry seeing as Bono was a founder of the initiative? We’re not too sure, but if all that does come out of this is a crummy app, color us unimpressed especially since there was all that talk of a “shared vision” when the partnership was announced.

Bonoberry lol !!!!
Who cares. U2 hasn’t been relevant since the 90s.
how many shows did they not sell out so far this decade?
@ gqauliga:
Funny…because there are people that say the same about you.
I thought Bono was investing in Palm these days…or am I wrong?
Personal attacks aside, I agree with gquaglia. U2 fits into the hip, iPod, media vision Apple has. What is RIM trying to prove with this?
RIM already has a sponsorship with Ticketmaster, which the BlackBerry was deemed the “official smart phone of Ticketmaster.” and Ticketmaster/Live Nation (one or the other), is/are sponsering U2’s tour. Bono’s company Elevation (a five way partnership between musical genius Bono, Apple iPod pioneer Jon Rubinstein, and three other executives) bought a very large amount of Palms stocks. Seems like BGR should have been on top of this news.
@gquaglia: No, no since. Bono has never been relevant. He’s just another ex-drug addict with two much money, a modicum of talent and a forum for him to blast his heroine-induced political opinions. He often doesn’t make any coherent sense and he also contradicts himself a lot.
I can understand helping people and his philanthropy is very much appreciated and is his saving grace. Otherwise, that’s about it.
I’m sure the backbeat’s of the site are going to call me a lowbrow, and offer some random minutia that they will overblow. That is, when they stop whacking it to gay porn.
Really?! Not to sound like a dick, but does anyone really care what Bono is doing or thinks for that matter?
That’s nice well RIM should also make a 50cent Blackberry G Unit version!!! BlackBerry is the future
Sent via BlackBerry.
I for one am kinda tired of Bono, his bitch The Edge, and the rest of U2 trying to make a comeback since that failed concert attempt in the late 90s.
I mean, there is only so far a band from the 80s can go before your tired of them. Frankly, being part Irish myself, Im also tired of Irish bands thinking they are the shit! The Corrs, Cranberries, and U2 being the biggest ones that all needed to bow out.
Dear Bono, STOP MEDDLING WITH APPLE AND RIM AND GO MAKE MORE BAD MUSIC OR SOMETHING AND STUFF. Love, Roger A
Ironic that they chose to partner with RIM, when Elevation Partners (U2’s investment company) owns a majority share in Palm and the Pre comes out in a couple weeks, isn’t it?
How about a ruggedized Rianna version of the Storm??? It could really take a beating…
@Ken,
Lmao…Go one, perhaps they can get Michael Jackson to promote that gemini model they are supposedly coming out with…You know, the one with the detatchable faceplates?!
@Gunny- beat you to that punch, no pun intended Ken. think i spelled it all out pretty clear in my above statement. i’m sure you would agree with me that Michael Bettiol, as do other writers here at BGR, dropped the ball on the story. the facts I layed out are pretty important to the story.
@ Ken and Bdizzah
LMAO… Reading this article made it worth it by reading the posts you two made. LMAO.
Dont know too much about U2 (Mexican in me) but this is pretty ridiculous.
Would Michael = Firefly?
I really doubt its an app, and if it is then U2 is stupid. Their are already apps in the app store from celebs. I know for sure that Pink and Lady Gaga have an app that you can check out there videos and all that stuff. So I don’t see what Apple wouldn’t allow them to do.
I’m seriously surprised there isn’t a Barack Obama Blackberry yet. During the campaign people were more intrigued by the fact he had a Blackberry than his actual stances or policies, so it would be a perfect combination for RIM to sell like 850 billion or so.
Am I the only one who wishes that Bono would just go away? I don’t need him on my Bold.
Well, knowing the Irish, it’s a safe bet you’ll be able to drink from this model and use it as a weapon.
Please no, just let Bon stay with the UN. They deserve each other. U”, last decent CD was “The Joshua Tree”. Maybe we should sick them upon Apple.
Stay away from RIM and BlackBerry. Actually, after reading the blog, I am beginning to quite like Johm Mayer.
@MadMike who insightfully stated: “I’m sure the backbeat’s of the site are going to call me a lowbrow, and offer some random minutia that they will overblow. That is, when they stop whacking it to gay porn.”
If it were not for your performances, I wouldn’t have any other interest in witnessing your gaping anus get reamed … over … and over …
Bottom’s up, bitchboy!
Now, if you’ll pardon me, I need to go poke out my mind’s eye …
With the (no less than) 1gb of available content space likely, a U2-inspired Blackberry is just waiting to happen. And will sell very well. Not to me, but it will sell.
File this under the “Who gives a flying F*%K what U2 thinks, or Bono. This guy, and his band are a bunch of clowns. They bash corporations, and “The establishment/government”, and say how they need to give more $$, yet he’s been nabbed for tax issues. Idiot…
Now that he can’t write songs about the IRA, no one cares…Go take a shower and put on some deodorant [I've read a few reports that says he doesn't shower often, and smells..eeeewwwww]. He can and RIM can make the “StinkBerry”
lol. I love how U2 fans get so offended. Almost as if they know it’s true and refuse to admit it. U2 is stale. What used to make U2 so intriguing was they kept re-inventing themselves. From 80s pop-new wave to blues/roots based alternative to electronic mesh 90s… thats what always made them fresh. The last 2 or 3 albums were “Let’s play it safe in the new millenia and make the same pop junk for iTunes commericals” U2. Coldplay (of whom I detest) and VAST sound like better versions of U2 than U2.
Oh wait, we’re talking about Blackberry. Yeah. Don’t care. I don’t buy phones based on aging rock star’s promotions and would belittle anyone that would.
Funny considering they sell out everywhere. How stupid are you?
