RIM’s upcoming devices: Onyx, Driftwood, Magnum

So… one of our ninjas just hit us up with some really interesting BlackBerry info. While the specs of the following codenames are confirmed, releases are not, and as such, this should be used for information sake. Here’s what we got:

BlackBerry Onyx:

  • GSM/GPRS/EDGE/UMTS device
  • GPS
  • Camera
  • Wi-Fi (no UMA support)
  • QWERTY keyboard
  • 480×360 resolution screen
  • Confirmed carriers: AT&T

BlackBerry Driftwood:

  • GSM/GPRS/EDGE/UMTS device
  • GPS
  • Camera
  • Wi-Fi with UMA
  • QWERTY keyboard

BlackBerry Magnum:

  • GSM/GPRS/EDGE/UMTS device
  • GPS
  • Camera
  • Wi-Fi (no UMA support)
  • QWERTY keyboard
  • 480×360 resolution screen
  • Confirmed carriers: AT&T

Now, those are three different devices with practically the same rough specs. We’d wager than the BlackBerry Magnum and Driftwood are the same device just meant for different carriers. Possibly the Driftwood for T-Mobile let’s say, and the Magnum for AT&T (who doesn’t offer UMA). Is that the BlackBerry with touch screen and physical QWERTY? Probably.

Also, we learned that RIM might be slowly refreshing the Bold with a UMA-capable version. Again, we’re not sure if that’s just a version meant for T-Mobile or maybe Rogers or this will be a global refresh (we doubt the last part).

Remember the BlackBerry Gemini? Well, it seems as if that’s not just one device, but rather an entire line of devices. Don’t get too excited, though. We’re told it could possibly just be a refresh of the Curve line-up. (Low cost handsets). The same could also be done with the Pearl line-up.

To recap: the Onyx, Driftwood and Magnum devices are all in the 9000-series family, all have 3G, and all should be absolutely delicious.

Not much here for T-Mo. Would love to see a full touch screen about the size of my Pearl and maybe a little thinner.

    BGR,
What’s the deal with these BGR mobile iphone posts. Do these guys work for you? And is the iPhone the official corporate phone of the BGR digerati? Speak on this please, Bro.

    @Wifiguy

Mobile iPhone posts? We released a BGR Mobile application for iPhone/iPod touch a while back and it lets you post comments from the aforementioned devices.

Do they work for us? No. They’re just enthusiastic readers like yourself. Is the iPhone the official corporate communication phone? We run our own Exchange 2007 and separate BES server (dedicated just for BGR) and I bought the entire staff BlackBerry Bolds. So… the answer would be no.

Verizon will be geting a BB with Touch Screen (NOT SurePress) QWERTY pad, and Trackball. EVDO Rev A, GPS, HSDPA/UMTS. WiFi, maybe if RIM adds it on there. WiFi is on GSM because of the lack of 3G in the US. Verizon will see two new BB by Summer. along with 2 or 3 HTC phones.

    @ BG. Thanks.
Valid point right there. And it leaves the readers with 2 options. Either goldman is confused on what he heard/read. Or he is flat out lying to make headlines. Otherwise why would anyone give him that kind of info? Or, is it possible that its much talked about “pluto” (curve 8330/8900 style keyboard photo mock up) ?? If so, then its NOT just “less then 3 months away”. It is way more

@backbeat- just saying BGR is actually responding to questions, meaning this must be his day off or something(or maybe he was actually in Vegas this last week). everyday is the sabbath for my soul. but maybe you don’t understand that statement, which is fine. i won’t be explaining it if you don’t understand.

to stay on topic, i say the more bb’s, the better for RIM and the world. but, one could say they have too many irons in the fire…

You’re taking the non-issue of the ‘Sabbath’ all too seriously, which was my point. I don’t give a damn and I highly doubt anyone else does either. It’s only relative to one’s personal belief system and is not the business of anyone else. Plain and simple. Enjoy ‘your’ sabbath.

^the point was more that BGR was answering questions after a post, which doesn’t happen enough. you didn’t really make the non-point sabbath your point until now. but yeah, i get it. i’ve speculated on who BGR really is/are. i’m sure somebody knows somebody…six degrees of Kevin Bacon style.

The fact remains that this is a blog. Not a forum or a support site. Just a blog. But, yeah … It’s a good thing to see BG chime in once in a while.

Early 90’s OS? You may want to take a look as the Bold or Storm. They both carry one of the best looking OS around. Do you live in the hills or something? Maybe you local wireless guy only carries TDMA phones??
