RIM’s upcoming devices: Onyx, Driftwood, Magnum

So… one of our ninjas just hit us up with some really interesting BlackBerry info. While the specs of the following codenames are confirmed, releases are not, and as such, this should be used for information sake. Here’s what we got:

BlackBerry Onyx:

  • GSM/GPRS/EDGE/UMTS device
  • GPS
  • Camera
  • Wi-Fi (no UMA support)
  • QWERTY keyboard
  • 480×360 resolution screen
  • Confirmed carriers: AT&T

BlackBerry Driftwood:

  • GSM/GPRS/EDGE/UMTS device
  • GPS
  • Camera
  • Wi-Fi with UMA
  • QWERTY keyboard

BlackBerry Magnum:

  • GSM/GPRS/EDGE/UMTS device
  • GPS
  • Camera
  • Wi-Fi (no UMA support)
  • QWERTY keyboard
  • 480×360 resolution screen
  • Confirmed carriers: AT&T

Now, those are three different devices with practically the same rough specs. We’d wager than the BlackBerry Magnum and Driftwood are the same device just meant for different carriers. Possibly the Driftwood for T-Mobile let’s say, and the Magnum for AT&T (who doesn’t offer UMA). Is that the BlackBerry with touch screen and physical QWERTY? Probably.

Also, we learned that RIM might be slowly refreshing the Bold with a UMA-capable version. Again, we’re not sure if that’s just a version meant for T-Mobile or maybe Rogers or this will be a global refresh (we doubt the last part).

Remember the BlackBerry Gemini? Well, it seems as if that’s not just one device, but rather an entire line of devices. Don’t get too excited, though. We’re told it could possibly just be a refresh of the Curve line-up. (Low cost handsets). The same could also be done with the Pearl line-up.

To recap: the Onyx, Driftwood and Magnum devices are all in the 9000-series family, all have 3G, and all should be absolutely delicious.

So little info. But pitting ninjas from BGR against CNBC I would go with a financial reporter which I believe didn’t went fishing for tips, but rather received a tip from the real higher-ups who wanted to let know the buissnes market that a good device is on its way….. Sorry BG, your still the best. But right now I think CNBC will be right.

@Rob: No apologies required. Hopefully, you’ll find the right combination of Blackberry features on the carrier of your choice. Chances are good that you will.

    @joecurve

That’s alright, thanks for the support nonetheless. I just can’t remember the last time Goldman had an original scoop of his own instead of corroborating someones, and also find it odd that this is the first we’re hearing of this mysterious device that’s less than three months away from release.

I mean, do you really think there is a phone being released by RIM in less than three months that the entire online community has never seen or heard of? Not me, not Crack, not Eng, not Giz, not no one. Maybe. But I highly, highly doubt it.

The Onyx and Magnum specs look exactly the same and both are for AT&T. That doesn’t make sense unless one of them has the touch screen as BG mentioned.

The specs are so vague it would be hard to tell if they’re the same phone. For example, if I said I had a Blackberry with a camera, gps, qwerty keyboard, …. I could be talking about the Pearl, the Curve, the Bold…. Maybe those parts of the specs are the same, but maybe one is an inch shorter and an inch thinner than the other… Who the hell knows?

Enough of a hint for me to stay bb ànd not to jump ship to Palm. Even though I like the fancy animations they have for everything. Hopefully 5.0 is visual friendly. These devices should hopefully be out within 5 months otherwise there specs will be changed to include LTE.

How god dammed fitting! A phone for Tmo called… DRIFTWOOD. As if its not obvious we get the scraps, now their naming convention even acknowledges it!

Where is a BB 3G for Tmo?

I love how people think LTE will be on a mobile device in their hands within 12 months. If they are very, very lucky, Telus will have some sort of LTE set up in Vancouver for the 2010 Olympics, and they will have aircards for laptops in late 2010, early 2011. You won’t see LTE mobiles stateside on carriers’ shelves until 2012-2013. WiMax is a joke, and will also not be seen in mobiles in this country, only aircards for laptops / MIDs.

All around these look like run-of-the mill specs for any handset that should be shipping 2009 – would be nice to know if it is HSDPA or HSUPA, and if they have 802.11n support yet.

TMo passed on the Bold bc it cost to much to make their own 3G radio on their own funky band. TMo in germany had it a long time ago. And for those having trouble with their track balls, try washing up after eating, I have had a trackball since they came out, never had trouble.
