So long, CTIA 2009

Now that CTIA 2009 has come and gone we wanted to take a step back and reflect on what was most definitely a show unlike any CTIA in recent years. It was great to hit the floor and catch up with a bunch of companies to talk tech of course, but anyone in attendance will tell you the show was slow. Very slow. Painfully slow. Hell, even Billy Crystal didn’t bother to show up. An interesting though unofficial note: The vendor count was up this year — significantly — or so we were told. Attendance was way down however, as was the amount of newsworthy announcements from the big boys. Blame it on the economy if it helps, but the number of new (and potentially significant) handset announcements from big manufacturers at the show can be counted on one hand. With three fingers.
Luckily there’s already a light at the end of the tunnel as this Summer we’ll definitely see things pick up. Palm will finally let people touch the Pre — and maybe even buy it. The BlackBerry 9630 will be out and we’ll be hitting you with info about the next up and coming handsets from RIM. HTC will have released the Touch Pro2 and the Touch Diamond2. Apple will be dropping a new iPhone or two… Things will be exciting again and hopefully enough momentum will be generated to help the industry as a whole begin to rebound. In the meantime, like the guy in front of us at Al Gore’s keynote, we’ll all be doing our best not to fall asleep.

Yes its long and gone now, Niagara Come on !!!!
now that ctia is over, did everyone hear about that new blackberry that verizon is supposed to release in a few months. touchscreen and keyboard. hopefully no surepress.
yeah, i heard that its the 99xx series, supposely codenamed: pluto. Since At&T got the iphone and sprint the Pre, Verizon is going to unleash this monster as a response to the Pre.. if this is true Verizon got this smart phone lineup on lock
T-Mobile is the biggest fuckup in this CTIA
end of the story
T-Mobile is worthless imo. They have nothing but $10/month lower rates. The phone selection is stupid at this point. People rave about how much they love their iPhones and Blackberrys. G1? Not so much… T-Fail
Zach do you still see the 9630 hitting Verizon in June/July? Or do you thinking it will be the recently rumored August?
He was so good in Monsters Inc too… Sad.
Very underwhelming this year except the pre.
Posted from BGR Mobile (iPhone).
You guys mentioned HTC releasing the Touch Diamond 2… Any idea who will carry it in the US and whether it will be released at beginning or end of summer?
Other than teasers about the Pre, Sprint has left me sorely disappointed. I agree with comments about Version’s upcoming lineup… it looked the most exciting of the bunch.
So… no announcement from T-Mobile regarding the Magic
T-Mob Rules you guys are Stupid and FAIL
Does SPB go to these types of events? If so did they say anything about mobile shell 3.0 which was supposed to be out at “the end of March”?
^SPB is probably the defendant in a suit brought by Palm due to 3.0 development.
Howcome you have a gathering that’s supposed to break news, instead shows off outed and announced devices. This is the most “@#+*ed-up” ctia in my opinion. Ohh did people truly paid to hear al gore ranting about the enviroment? Is that what people intended to spend 3 days in vegas for? Hopefully WES will be more interesting
Agreed to all… this big event was a big FAIL.. no release dates, nothing new… lame lame lAME!
@ grr and Richie
Can anyone verify this? I thought the rumor mill has the touch screen w/ qwerty going to att?? BG can you clear this up for me? Pluot? Magnum?
Since the only thing being churned out by the big mfrs are slate-based featurephones [or regurgitated qwerty-based WM designs based on a virtually 4-year old OS], what did everyone expect? The Pre is a niche-filler which didn’t have any -news- to deliver.
On the other hand, you can expect some interesting news at WES in a month.
