Apple/iPhone rumor of the day: OmniVision to produce 3.2 and 5 megapixel image sensors

We know that listening to any form of an Apple rumor — especially those that involve to the iPhone — is akin to an hour long session of water-boarding, but you’re just going to have to take this one on the chin for the sake of the team. It seems that the loveable lads over at DigiTimes have yet to have enough fun with their Apple rumor-mongering and are now reporting that Apple and OmniVision have both signed off on a contract which would have the latter produce 3.2 megapixel image sensors for the upcoming iPhone revamp. In addition to this, the same source is also reporting that a 5 megapixel image sensor is also included in the deal which is not iPhone bound but rather for a different product all together which is slated to launch much later this year, perhaps for that rumored touchscreen netbook or “the other” iPhone. We’ll see…

Megapixels don’t matter when you have no flash, zoom or any of the other basic components of your stand alone digital point and shoot cameras

It’s funny how most people don’t know much about cameras. The only thing the megapixel count has to do is with the size the photo can be blown up to with out losing inital quality. If apple puts 3.2mp with a good lense and a good sensor, it will be able to take picture that can blow a 5mp camera out of the water (with a crap lense and sensor). A 3.2 would take a nice 4×6 or 5×7. While the 5.0 could probably go up to a 12×16, however, I’d personaly rather have a quality 5×7 then a washed out, garbage 12×16. These high megapixel camera phones (so far, the ones released in the states, excluding a couple) have horrible sensors and lenses. Thus the higher megapixel count is just a marketing gimmic to those that don’t know much about cameras.

As many have already said, the megapixel game is more for marketing than anything. Until cell phones have more than shitty tiny plastic lenses, they won’t be good for much more than snapshots. I’m all for cameras in cell phones as they can come in handy but I’ve yet to see any impressive improvements in cell pic quality in years. I’m sure there will be some nice improvements to iPhone hardware this year but the majority of it will probably be under the hood or perhaps finally a decent screen resolution.

As has been obviously avoided like the plague … There is no news whether flash or multi-zoom is being included. That article only states the leak about the multi-pixel cam.

Your bad/false-assumptions leave you hanging by a thread … just barely.

@Iphone 3G No Bars, What are you talking about? A 5MP Camera is still a shitty Camera. I already have a 12MP Camera so i think it’s best if they just throw a 3.2MP Camera and not Sacrifice the size of the damn thing. Why make a freggin phone the Size of a Gordita and still throw in a bullshit 5 to 7MP shitty camera.

This lines up with a rumor I overheard at a conference: at least one of the new iPod touch “variants” is a device fusing the touch with iPhoto/iMovie software *on the device* and better optics to create a handheld suited for connected digital photography and HD video. It may also have embedded 3G and a special data plan but won’t necessarily be sold as a ‘phone’. In other words, goodbye Flip Mino…’twas nice knowing you.

it’s all about the quality of the image, not how many MP you have. That is from a 2.7MP camera.

    Crunch says:

This is the iPhone 3G, or whatever it’ll be called. Why are we talking about cameras. 3.2MP is plenty, with a Carl Zeiss lens, flash, and optical zoom. There.

1,000 new API’s for the new SDK. Now THAT’s something. A 32GB version. Mmmmmhhhmmm. And higher resolution screen maybe? I’d love to see 640×480, or, gasp, 800×480. HSPA @ 7.2Mbps will be NIIIIIICE!!

Alright Apple, we’ve had our money-makers for 2 years with no cut/copy/paste, MMS, crappy camera. Let’s take the gloves off, and make an iPhone that will blow every other device on every other carrier away for about a year!

If you build it, I will come! :D :D

Big Deal!!! iphone picking up the rear again – everyone has at least a 3.2 camera – I was hoping for a 5 but not to be. So wow iphone’s new phone will have some new features – a 3.2 camera and cut and paste – I am awe struck.

Where is the line up for Pre?

    Crunch says:

The Pre will likely fail due to a number of bad decisions, and that should be the end of the painfully long, exhausting, yet inevitable death of the Palm Corporation, which 4 years ago, made me fall in love with PDA smartphones, and I never looked back. Kind of sad.

    John says:

^ Good point, Palm did let us all down BIG time as they screwed around with name changes and “Foleo” (wtf was that all about?) so I too am concerned about their ability to really pull this off and maintain momentum. Remember, Palm once owned this market and then they simply let it go. Apparently they weren’t even aware there was a competitor until Blackberry came out with the “Pearl”. Safe to say there are not a lot of “sharp knives” in their executive suite.

    Christopher Cox says:

I got a smartphone because I love apps. Pre will fail for me because the apps are limited to web technologies. Right now, there is not a better mobile platform with apps comparable to iPhone. Sure kids have made immature apps, but those exist in both winmo and palm. The only difference is the sdk makes programming for the device easier than others, and so many more people want to program for iPhone more than other platforms, and that includes kids. Overall the iPhone apps feel next generation. When I go back to my tilt it’s like I am thrust back to win3.11 days.
