Nokia @ CTIA: E71x and E75

Nokia made an interesting showing at CTIA this year, opting to focus almost entirely on apps and services rather than hardware. Ovi this, share that, social this, messaging that… Fair enough. A solid portfolio of value adds and supporting services is essential for the company as it continues its efforts to make the “Internet Company” branding stick, but we’ve yet to see Nokia enter the leader phase in this space. Nope, it’s still a game of catch up for the time being so for now we’re a bit more interested in what Nokia does best — handsets. Nothing that hadn’t been previously announced made a showing at the Nokia booth this year; in fact the company’s newest handset is the E71x that we scooped way back in November. It’s finally here though and it’s cheaper than we expected which definitely isn’t a bad thing. So with that, feast your eyes on the E71x after the jump, along with its relatively new unlocked brother-in-law the E75. More on Nokia to come.

That e75 looks so sweet. I have an e71, I hope with the release of the e71x they can fix the purple camera!

The E75 looks absolutely delicious. The iphone 3.0 better have some sick AMOLED display and a keyboard trick up it’s sleave or it’s N97 or E75 for me.

Its incredible seeing where Nokia was 5 years ago compared to now, they dropped the ball big time in smartphones, and now its catch up time. I think its too late, but I know this; before the smartphone era Nokia made the best phones. I think best option for Nokia is to buy RIM, that would be the best for the consumer too, I thought they were going to do it 2-3 years ago, and it would have been mucj easier given the market cap of both companies. What do you guys think, imagine how many new blackberry’s they would come up with every year instead of RIM’s super slow product development. What do you guys think? Discuss…

I don’t mean any harm but, this is why Nokia is playing catchup. Still pushing the Razr, I mean e71. Didn’t Moto teach manufacturers anything. The N97 is basically a HTC Touch/G1 upgrade with S60 firmware at this point. Stop following and take the lead already. I used to be die hard Nokia/s60. Now, I’d feel like a fool for paying those prices for such a feature set. They’re gonna have to lower prices to get sales. I mean honestly, the e75 is marketed as a business device but looks like a teen messaging device, on form factor. Unfortunately, who’s paying over $450 for a handset for a teen, when there are cheaper options with same form factor.

Hard to argue your logic. I can see how that is true. I don’t know why it is taking Nokia so dang long to come out with stuff. Samsung is kicking them in the butt big time with manufacturing of Symbian touchscreens and all the other companies are kicking Nokia’s butt with the E75’s form factor already.

Nokia has got some major catching up to do!

Hence buy RIM and get it over with. Are Finnish people known to have this kind of pride or stubbornness? I understand the Ego issue since from day 1 Nokia said they don’t need to buy RIM they can do it on their own, and the above is their best? The way smart phone market is growing Nokia could be reduced to a major player in developing countries only(granted in those countries Cell Phone=Nokia), but will keep losing US and EU, where the money is at.

If Nokia was really concerned about the US picking up their phones they would advertise. I have yet to see a Nokia advertisement on ANY major TV station. Yes, there are ads for t-mobile or att that feature Nokia, but I’m refering to blanket advertising for Nokia, not carrier advertising for their underwhelming product line of dumb phones. When they’re ready to step up to the big boy league and get serious about putting out NEW handsets running NAM signals, then you’ll see Nokia stuffing money into their pockets like AIG execs.

Nokia has got a tremendous brand presence. Put a similiar looking Samsung and Nokia next to each other, and people will buy Nokia. Now they got Symbian FP2 through AT&T’s door, (6650 & E71x),it is just a matter of time for a whole lot of Nokias show up on ATT. Don’t expect any N Series on AT&T as they will not give AT&T to charge $30 data plan. No $30 data plan means no subsidies for high end N series devices.

I see AT&T GPS… Can you still install Nokia Maps or they’ve locked it out?

I too am drooling at seeing that AT&T on the E75! I asked at the AT&T store and they said it is supposed to come in over the summer. I’ve been hawking that thing for months now and have long wondered why Cingular/AT&T had stopped carrying the high-end Nokias. I remember heading to Cingular with my $350 in hand in 2003 the day the 3600 came out! And my 3600 STILL WORKS and looks really cool too. Big, but cool!

Nokias are still my choice, the only phone I really want. They’ve been solid phones–only time I F*d one up was when it fell in the sink! I’ve tried others (Blackberry Bold, AT&T Tilt), but you know what? I really don’t LIKE touchpad dialing! But I DO like a QWERTY keyboard. So while other providers do offer a dual keypad phone, AT&T has been woefully lacking in that, offering only that damn Pantone. I want WiFi so I don’t have to have a data plan.

This phone is my dream–and I’m glad it’s Nokia! And red. I love red.
