Look at the carrier. It says iPhone. That means this screenshot was taken from the iPhone emulator included in the dev tools. It was taken on a computer. How can you possibly send a video to a phone that doesn’t even have a number or a network to run on. sorry guys it’s a fake.

I am not going to argue with you and say that the iPhone and G1’s sales situations here are analogous. They absolutely are not. But just as there are conditions that make the iPhone’s sales more impressive, there are conditions that do the same with the G1.

First, the iPhone suffered from only a bit of scarcity early on and Apple kept up with supply well. The scarcity that did exist helps sales. It’s free publicity and free hype.

The things that make the G1’s sales more impressive isn’t just being on T-Mobile (less than half AT&T’s subscribers) and having less advertising. The G1 also came out during a much more difficult economic time and when the other carriers also had high end smartphones.

I would argue that these situations are at least roughly similar, but you could certainly argue otherwise, there are a ton of variables to compare different phones in different times/economic conditions. And I don’t know about the Storm’s situation much, but that phone’s never interested me so I don’t really care.

And the potential isn’t in the G1 itself (it will always be limited by the hardware/design,) it’s more in the Android OS.

I am running 3.0 beta 2 and am VERY happy with this software. It’s not nearly what it’s going to be in June, but I feel like I already have a new device. Beta 2 is very smooth and so far, for me, very stable.

That says that it has similar promise, especially considering it did it on T-Mobile and with less fanfare and advertising.

I love when people make this comparison. The Storm people do the same thing. The “Storm/G1 sold more units at launch than the original iPhone”…

The original iPhone was sold for $500 and $600 unsubsidized. Not only that, initial sales were slower because Apple could not meet the demand. Stores sold out of multiple shipments each day and still turned away hundreds of customers.

The Storm and the G1 were what, $200 on contract? Also, there never really was much of a shortage of either of those devices. The Storm sold out in most stores the first day, but that was also due to the fact that most of the stores got VERY small shipments because of them needing to rollback the firmware.

I don’t know about the G1 but I called the store next to me on launch day and at late afternoon that day, they still had a dozen or so to sell.

So I don’t think the G1 has similar promise of sales as the iPhone does. I think anyone interested in Android as a platform is going to wait for a different device on a different carrier.

As far as the G1, it’s not competition for the iPhone. Android itself may be on the right network and the right hardware, but as far as sales go, I think you would be hard pressed to find many that defected from the iPhone to the G1.

You MIGHT have seen a few more had it been on a better network. And blah blah, I’m not comparing network to network, but TMO is small and they have even less 3G coverage than AT&T.

And no, I don’t think the iPhone is perfect. No device ever will be not matter what it is or how feature packed. Perfection is such a relative term that it cannot be defined. So no matter what you see as perfection, someone else will find flaws with it. What I am saying is that for a LARGE majority of users, the iPhone gets fairly close to everyone you could want.

Popularity breed contempt and the iPhone certainly is it’s share of haters (not you) simply because most people really do love it. It does have the hight satisfaction rate of ANY device in the industry, so it must have something going for it. MMS or not.

And I wasn’t kidding about the negativity thing either. Some people must really think if they bitch about the iPhone enough, Apple will pull it off of the shelves.

Do I think I am somehow impacting sales of the iPhone with my comments? What? Yes, you’ve finally caught on to my master plan of trying to hinder iPhone sales by making comments on a blog.

And these comments are not even that negative at all, there are a lot of points about the iPhone that I like a lot. If you’re looking for somebody that irrationally hates the iPhone, there are plenty of other posters to look at.

And to answer your question, i’ve messed around and used plenty of devices and my current device is a G1. And it’s been very good to me.

Yes, I have apps too, not the tens of thousands you do, but all the important ones are there, just the games are lacking. I have 15 tip calculators, you have 50, so what. You aren’t sorting thru all those tens of thousands of apps and trying them all out, you find one that does what you want it to smoothly and move on.

And the potential is greater because I have apps that the iPhone simply can’t have because they won’t allow your phone to multi-task. I can MMS, not that I do all that often. My phone doesn’t freeze and handles multiple apps quite well. I have a nice physical keyboard to type on. I have excellent chat/Email integration.

But on the downside the camera is iPhone level crap. No video recording and the overall design is “meh.”

Neither phone is perfect and zealots on any side of a debate are idiots to think that any well designed smartphone is light years beyond the others.

What I don’t really understand is this. Do the Trolls commenting on the negatives of the iPhone think that they are going to cause iPhone sales to drop? You haven’t bought one and aren’t going to, so that’s pretty much the extent of your impact on iPhones sales.

And I’ll say this as well. I would still give up MMS and C&P in trade for the incredible apps, games and business alike, that are on the iPhone. No other handheld platform has applications that look and run so beautifully as these.

So, be happy with whatever device that you have now that does MMS so you don’t wet yourself waiting to post some dumbass picture of yourself to your buddies. Unless you have an iPhone, you will NOT be enjoying the tens of thousands of applications out there. Keep your Nokia’s and BBs with your java based poop applications. Keep your WM so you can run 50 apps in the background and miss every other call that comes in because the device is frozen up.

But hey, at least you can MMS right now!

MMS being included should NOT mean anything to most iPhone users, since most iPhone users were quick to tell you how obsolete it is when you have email on your phone (even though that same email client could only send a single picture and it was resized to MMS resolution anyway). If what they said was true, the addition of MMS should result in a resounding “Meh” from all the diehards and everyone who has waited for this feature should be the ones who are really excited. But we all know that’s not the case…

I like that I was agreeing with you that the iPhone shouldn’t be labeled a “toy” and you still got all angry because I said that because the iPhone focuses more on multimedia features than business features it is “less serious.”

You act like this is some outlandish opinion. If a phone puts more focus and features into it’s display and music components, then I am sorry but those are entertainment features. That makes it overall “less serious.” It’s not like this is some horrible claim. Those entertainment features are what make is such a good seller.

Yeah, I agree they are old complaints (and soon to be invalid.) I was only bringing them up in response to D9’s claim that essentially said “Well now the iPhone has MMS and copy/paste, look out competitors!!!!”

Apple’s competitor’s don’t care and I don’t think a large number of people are waiting in the wings on these features before they take a dive into an AT&T contract.

Another “new” feature that should’ve been on ANY smartphone in that price range.

On one hand it’s great that Apple is finally gettin these features on board.

But on the other hand it just reminds you that somehow a high end smartphone didn’t have MMS or copy and paste.

A case in point. Shouldn’t Windows Mobile be a finished product by now after eight-odd years and six different versions if it already had all the features. I’m sure they’re still adding some that the iPhone already has.

The reason why the iPhone isn’t considered a corporate-class business handset because there still aren’t tools in place to manage thousands of them at once from a central area and I think there were still missing pieces in the OSX Mobile framework in keeping them fully secured. At least that’s what I’ve read in some IT articles.

From someone who has paid only $15 for unlimited data on devices that supported 3G long before the iPhone 3G and used considerably more data than the iPhone is typically capable of (all with picture/audio/video messaging available), this is ridiculous. Hardware limitation or not, they’re using it to their advantage to make people switch. It’s just sad they’re using STANDARD features as the bait.

I don’t think it won’t work on EDGE network, I’m pretty sure they mean it only works on the iPhone3G.
And I don’t believe that this is due to some hardware limitation, I think the MMS is going to remain blocked on the carrier’s side simply because you already get a $20 data and they don’t want you to stay with it for as long as you possibly can and do want you to upgrade. So, an other way to try to force users to upgrade.

To solve battery issue, I just keep a car charger handy as well as a desk charger otherwise I cant make a full day without it dying. Basically what i have always donr for a smartphone… I would always be charging it in the car on my way back home.

The iPhone currently only supports a few video formats like you tube and H.264. It won’t play any wmv, 3gp, or mov files I’ve loaded. So does that mean it will only play video MMS that comes from another iPhone? (assuming video recording is even a possibility in 3.0)

Or am I mis-reading this, & sending video MMS will not be supported, but receiving is. In which case the sender has to know what formats your iPhone supports?

Either way, I’m not getting my hopes up.
