BlackBerry App World officially comes to life

Ladies and gentlemen, the highly anticipated and long-awaited BlackBerry App World is out and ready to roll. Now you can officially wonder where your emails, SMS and call history went once you jam pack your memory with apps galore. For those who were feeling a little iPhone envy, you can now enjoy tons of your own apps for the BlackBerry with many being developed by the same folks who produced some of the iPhone apps. All you have to do is download BlackBerry App World and grab some premium or free apps for your enjoyment. For now, a PayPal account is required to purchase apps but RIM is working on getting other forms of payment in the works soon. Some of the apps include Shazam, Bloomberg and a fun little game called Brain Challenge 2. We all know this is just a start as developers are still cranking away with their apps, so there is still a lot more to look forward to!

Thanks BadMon1906!

    Just loaded the App store on my Bold (4.6) AT&T and it’s working just fine. I’m loving the interface. Good job RIM. +1

    Doesn’t appear to support the Storm. I get the following message when installing “sorry – your device does not meet the system requirements that are needed to support BlackBerry app world”.

    Is this true? Why would they release this without Storm support? Anyone on a Storm get it installed?

    @ Andy Bernard:

    Same issue here, I have an 8900 that apparently does not meet min. system requirements. I then go to download on my desktop and am told that it will only download using IE, not Firefox and any other browser, so I switch to IE. Then every time I click the download button, IE shuts down.

    What a sham. Kudos to those of you that have been successful in getting this on your BlackBerry.

    It’s amazing that the iPhone users that says that RIM is a little too late don’t understand the history of BlackBerry. Yes iPhone is a great product, noticed I said PRODUCT! Unlike RIMs numerous PRODUCTS! SO while Apple is working on making 1 device better ie: iPhone 1st Gen, iPhone 3g of course in various gb sizes, RIM has put out from 2006 til now, the 8100, 8110, 8120, 8130, 8220, 8300, 8310, 8320, 8330, 8350i, 8900, 9000, 9530… Hmmm more models for various customers. So while you iPhone lovers try to rip BB a new one because of the App World remember 1 thing. While Apple was spending money and time with the glorified app store, RIM was creating better phones to appeal to various customers. I mean how did it take Apple to allow MMS, Stereo Bluetooth, Tethering, Copy & Paste, Replaceable batteries?!?!

    Bottomline is this, stop comparing 2 different products! Just because RIM just launched the APP World now, does not make them late to the game. They have been in the Smartphone game way before Apple. Think about what they started before iPhones even existed!!!!

    I have an AT&T Bold and it works just fine. I like the layout and everything but I feel that when they have a lot more apps, it’s going to be a mess to sort through.

    Also, it’s a little on the sluggish side when loading up everything (on 3G).

    There isn’t a ton of crap in there yet like the App Store has, so that’s a major plus.

    I have successfully downloaded app world on my storm and I am very impressed. It is fluid and awesome. I just emailed the link to my phone from RIM’s appworld page and downloaded it from the bb browser.
    I had a Ipod Touch and as much as I like apple; I think I like what Blackberry is doing more right now. You can get a bb on any network and access their appworld. The UI is really slick and cool.
    Amazing job RIM!

    As an iPhone user who never really liked Blackberry that much, I have to think this is good for the phone business, and for app developers. I suspect as time goes by, the business model that ends up appealing to them might just evolve into influencing the competition. Either Apple to Blackberry, or visa versa.

    But the really good news is between the App stores for iPhone and Blackberry, Windows Mobile is now looking all that much more lame in comparison.

    I’ll have to give this a whirl once the new phones come in later today and tomorrow. As long as RIM keeps the categories logical throughout the store, it looks like it will be a winner with consumer Blackberry owners and those with progressive Enterprise support.

    @Casper-
    so with the many years of history RIM has, shouldn’t they have put out a better phone eventually? i’m not saying the BB is bad, but Apple seemed to nail it pretty good right off the bat and with much approval from the masses(most of which who NEVER owned an apple product in their lives). looks like HTC Snap is on the heels of the bb anyway now…

    @Casper

    Umm maybe for iPod users and those who have never used another smartphone they nailed it but there is still much missing on iPhone and some are physically not possible.

    Windows Mobile is only a factor in europe. It’s a dead brand in the states.
