Here we go again; AT&T’s Nokia E71x delayed

Did you read Friday’s news about the E71x and think to yourself, this is just too good to be true? Well, it looks like you might be right. We have good news and bad news regarding the impending arrival of Nokia’s slim smartphone — which do you want first? Ok, the bad news: It appears as though the release of AT&T’s E71 has been delayed, possibly by as many as eight weeks or even longer. We’re hearing some last minute issues arose and the unit will require a new firmware build before AT&T will release it. The specific problems are a bit unclear at this point but we’re told they relate to email/Mail for Exchange syncing. Ouch. If this info pans out, and we have no reason to doubt our ninja, this would put the release some time around late May at best. Now for the good news: Nokia is apparently pushing hard for a $149.99 price point (after $50 MIR) and it looks like it might actually happen. Woo! Ok, so the good news doesn’t exactly outweigh the bad but if the E71x hits shelves at $150 it could definitely make a splash — as long as it’s released before 2015, that is. One last note as many posted this question in the comments section of Friday’s post: the E71x will be considered a smartphone/PDA and as such, the $30 data plan will be a requirement. Look on the bright side, at least you’re not paying $45 for BES.

Thanks, iBold!

The OS isn’t as bad as some like to make it out to be lol. Actually i find it pretty nice to use. Ugly is changed by themes, yes the default theme is ugly, but so what? Just change it. My only complaint about the e71, it’s too damned small. I can’t one hand it like i could the e61/e62 :-( . Posted from an e71-2.

As good as this phone looks, it’s too outdated to be selling above $50 after rebate…

This phone is the best for communication. Heavy phone call usage gives it 2 full days of battery life and upto 3 days of moderate use. Fring works well for Voip. Keyboard is excellent for sms and emails… I am done texting before my friend picks up his phone to dial someone and say “hello”. Email attachments support vdo clips, pdf, office documents and loads more. Fits nicely in my shirt pocket.
For people who find symbian unintuitive please grow up. You can arrange/move any icons/apps in whichever folder. The four buttons around the d-pad (home, calender, mail, contacts) are a stroke of genuis for ease of use… and u can alter settings for short press and long press.

Unlimited texting is $20.00 for an individual line and the PDA Unlimited data is $30.00. I am not sure how you are paying $30.00 for unlimited text and web. You may want to check your next bill…

You don’t have to have the Data plan or PDAsmartconnect or anything like that if you buy your phone at Bestbuy Mobile. Heck their phones are usually cheaper and NO mail in rebate…………

What I was referring to was the comment that he said he has unlimited text and internet on the Nokia from AT&T for $30. I work for AT&T and that is incorrect no matter where he bought the phone from. It is $20 for 1 person to have Unl text or $30 for the whole family. Then it is an additional $30 to have a PDA Unl data plan.

Roo, false, unbranded phones can get the unlimited data and text for 30 dollars. I currently have an E71-2 with 30 dollar family unlimited text, and the 10 dollar unlimited data addon.

If AT&T requires all smart phones/PDAs to have a 30 dollar data plan….then why can I buy a BOLD+plan on their website and go to checkout without adding a data plan to my cart????

I never said you have to get a PDA plan. What I was questioning was the unlimited texting and internet on the Nokia E71x for $30 on the AT&T Network. The PDA plan alone is $30 and texting is $20-$30. :)

    zephxiii:
Thanks for clarifying that. I thought that was a possibility but I would be careful on your data usuage and watch your bill. I know sometimes if you use an unlocked phone you can’t fully use the Internet or have problems because the settings aren’t provisioned for AT&T’s Network. Have you experienced any issues with the interenet or your billing yet? :)

AT&T does not require a BB/Smartphone user to have a data package. That is a fact! Unlike the foreign owned Big Red, who requires any one using a BB/Smartphone to also pay $30+ for a data package.

AT&T may require you to sign up for a data package to get a Rebate on the device when you purchase a new one, the choice is yours. You can pay less for equipment in exchange for taking the data plan if you do not feel the cost is worth it then you CAN drop the data package, ypu cannot do that on the Darkside!

One last note to some of the other post: if AT&T knows you are using a BB/Smartphone and you want to take a data package the smallest one is currently $30/mo if the do not know or they think you are using a regular phone then it is $10 or $15/mo.

which means if you are using an device that is not in their system then you can add take either data package, for now.

I believe they will eventually start checking for this.

    Guys,

I never said AT&T required an Internet package for a PDA. Please do not misunderstand me. I was clearly responding to naeem who said they were getting Unlimited text/internet on AT&T for $30. The Nokia E71x should have a PDA plan on it to use the unlimited internet, or you would have to pay for usuage as you go but that can get very expensive. Somehow a smaller internet plan must have been added to this persons plan but I was warning against possible overage since this Nokia is a PDA phone. I never said you had to have the internet package. I was just making sure the pricing was being told correctly. Thanks :)

I have an unlocked E71-2 on AT&T and it is great. I moved from a 1st gen iPhone and am very happy.

When I called to change plans (really only to get the visual voicemail turned off) they KNEW what kind of device I had without telling them and wouldn’t let me do the $10 data plan trick.

The requirement of a data plan is not to purchase the phone, just to get it at the subsidized price.

Okay…So i’m a little confused. will the 15 dollar data plan work on the blackberry bold or no? I want to get one but I don’t want to pay 30 for a data plan. I wanted the e71 but i’m not waiting 2 months

    Mitch:
No it will not. If you are using the Bold on AT&T when we put the serial number in our system it recognizes that it is a Blackberry and will not allow us to add the $15 feature. If you did add the $15 feature and used a lot of the internet you would get a really high bill bcuz that phone is a PDA and uses a lot more kb per page than a regular phone that would use the $15 data feature.

There is a big difference between E71 and E71x.

The E71x is running FP2 while the E71-2 runs FP1.

Regarding updates – FP2 supports FOTA, FP1 updates via USB to a PC.

So I have a dumb question. I have an unlocked E71 and was told by the Nokia store that I could access wireless internet at no charge when in a hotspot, like my laptop does. ATT hits me with a big charge the first month. Anyone?

Not sure where you got that information from because as far as I have read Verizon and AT&T are pretty neck and neck. AT&T is not even close to being as at the bottom as Sprint. Not only does AT&T have everything their prices are comparable with Verizon which are the 2 top leaders in the industry!
