Acer to launch Android handset in September 2009?

Remember that sketch of Acer’s roadmap that made a brief appearance at CES? Two “secret” Android handsets were included on the crudely drawn sketch and it is quite possible that one of them may be arriving in September 2009. According to the Philippine Business Mirror newspaper, the touchscreen-enabled, Android-driven A1 will be one of four new handsets Acer is reportedly planning to launch in September 2009. Acer has already announced four handsets, the X960, F900, M900 and DX900, for release in the first half of 2009 and is rumored to be releasing four additional handsets, the F1, C1, L1 and E1, in the second half of 2009. It is quite possible that the A1 may be released alongside this latter group of phones.

Good, I am glad to see more handsets on the platform. I am really hoping to see some more android at CTIA this year. The G1 is a nice start, but….

I’m hoping someone comes along and offers an android phone without a specific carrier subsidy and contract. Make it 250 or 300 on no contract and turn it in yo a real open source, unlocked device. Even a device that was good, but not great, on the hardware side would sell like crazy if it were not tied to a contract.

android really needs to expand to different carriers.. i really think this is the only platform that can compete with the iphone right now.

    The formula is quite simple:

Nice hardware design + Android = Easy money

The global economy finally seems to be turning a corner, so this would be a great time to get some hot new Android devices on the market.

Yeah!… Another new company trying to compete in a already overcrowded segment of wireless comunications. Without a major carrier partner this phone will got hte way of other before it, there have been several well built WinMo phones over the past three years that are gone today!

Apple pulled it off, but they came in with a strong partner!

Acer and Android are trying to compete with out a partner? I wish them well.

Geeky bloggers excited about another Android phone does not equate to mass consumer demand.

But, i will check it out at the CTIA Show next week.

I’m sold on the Android platform. I’ve been using the unlocked G1 since Jan. 1st on AT&T with no 3G. (take that Iphone)

Carrying around that G1 in one pocket makes me need to carry around a gold bar in the other. That way I can balance out the weight. I’d settle for ACER or even Wal-Mart brand if they can improve on the G1.
