Netflix ponders streaming to Wii and PS3

It looks like Xboxers might not be the only gaming console owners who will be able enjoy Netflix streaming in the future, provided customers show interest that is. A new survey currently being conducted by Netflix asks users a variety of questions surrounding the idea of streaming Netflix content directly to their Wii consoles. The survey also questions what the requirement to purchase a $10 “Netflix Instant Streaming Disc” would do to Wii streaming desirability, leading us to believe Nintendo has absolutely no interest in making the service available any time soonvia a firmware update. $10 to stream to the Wii and avoid purchasing and setting up yet another hardware device? Count us in. Reports also suggest a similar survey covering PlayStation 3 is currently being circulated. What do you guys think — would you pay $10 to add Netflix streaming to your Wii or PS3?

Thanks, Jon Jon!

If they added it to the PS3, I would stop renting from the video store nearby.

In my opinion, I don’t give a crap about any of the gaming consoles. What they need to do is stream to smart phones and make the use of 3g technology. And we would also participate with the rest of the world in cell phones may be than yes its a may be.

Yes. Absolutely yes. Only 10 bucks? I’d spend that on some useless thing I don’t need. And it would save me a few trips to the post office. I’m tired of my girlfriend being the only one who uses the Wii.

I already have a Tivo HD which I can stream Netflix to, but I certainly would NOT pay extra for it. I already have the NF subscription, besides for non-HD? That’s just insulting. If they add all current movies and in HD, then yeah I would pay a slightly higher monthly fee (like $2.99 Max) for it. Otherwise, kiss my ass and send me the disc.

Just reading the article the thought occurred to me – don’t blame Netflix for the $10 charge – Those of you out there with the Wii and PS3 might want to look at Nintendo and Sony. All Microsoft did for us 360 users on Live was ask us to download an update to allow the 360 to connect to and stream Netflix. I’m a gold member of Live and I paid Netflix the $8.95 to subscribe to their service – It works very nicely. These companies are all about making the money, I understand that. My question is – Is this $10 extra onto the cost of a Netflix subscription or does it include the subscription and Wii/PS3 users would get the Netflix app on a disc?

Been sweating the TivoHD real bad – so soo tempted to get one – just wondering are the additional content services enough on Tivo now that I wouldn’t miss On-Demand (Comcast)???

I’m sure the dvd you have to buy is just so you can’t give out your username/password to everyone and let everyone stream free movies. I bet your subscription will be tied to the dvd or something like that.

HELL YES, that will be f-ing awesome, think about it that is less that two dvd rentals not to mention the gas and time, I’ll admit as a ps3 owner I was experiencing a little console envy, of coarse killzone 2 stopped that, but YES, I’m in, send me the disk…

I’d avoid wii for two reasons.
    1. Wii is like 480 and the quality isn’t very good. And
    2. It’s been hacked and completly reversed so netflix streaming on wii would prob give someone an easy way to see what/how the system works and bypass it… And then in the end it’ll make it worse for the consumer.

And netflix streaming isn’t that great. If they offered streaming of everything they have to rent already on DVD and BLuRay it’d be a different story.

Whats the point of all this anyway? The movie download serive is only available in the US. If Netflix does come, it will only be for the US. I live in Hong Kong and we dont even have movie trailers for download here. So much for Sony mentioning that they would expand it to other regions later!!! :-(

If it was a one time fee i’d be all over it. If it was another 10/month, not so much. Not for non-hd.

Not me. It doesn’t seem like a bad deal, I just don’t get the point of paying to dl movies. it would be a more attractive idea in hd but at the same time that would make it annoying as hell since it would take waaay longer to dl anything and fill up your hard drive like theres no tomorrow.

    Don says:

Yes I would pay $10 bucks for it. People pay $50 a year to watch it through XBox live because without it they wouldn’t be getting it. They also pay a mint for Tivo service which allows them to get it. The reason netflix has to charge you for the disc is that the service will use a technology that does not come installed on the Wii or PS3. They have to pay microsoft for that technology so they can’t give it away for free. As far as the video quality of the Wii, it is the same as a regular DVD since it is 480P

It actually doesn’t use hd space. I don’t even have a hd on my 360 and use netflix all the time.
