Next round of Apple handsets and netbooks to sport OLED displays?

A report this morning from Australian tech magazine Smarthouse suggests Apple may have selected a series of OLED displays for its next round of handset and netbook screens. According to an unnamed source within the company, initial fruits of the company’s newly awarded display contract with LG will be an entirely new set of OLED screens that will make their way into Apple’s upcoming iPhone and iPod Touch models, as well as a new and often-rumored Apple netbook. The move would certainly go a great length to help somewhat lackluster battery performance, especially considering the variety of added battery-sucking features that were announced at Apple’s 3.0 event this past Tuesday. So what do you guys think about the possibility of a sexy new capacitive OLED display on the inevitable iPhone / iPod Touch models due in June or July?

Thanks, Donald!

@Pete Belk, it sounds like you’re jealous of what the iphone can do. Being an adamant hater is the same thing as being a huge fanboy btw.

OLED is way too expensive for it to come into a new iphone unless it’s going to be upwards of 1000 bucks. I think we probably still have some time before a new iphone release, i would like to see updates to the OS that push the processing power and really necessitate a need for a stronger phone than just a fancy new screen. I don’t think an upgrade like that can be justified quite yet.

Wow!! I am amazed people are buying into this, just like they are buying into the dual-core CPU rumor.

From the article: “Apple ‘may’ have selected a series of OLED displays for its next round of handset and netbook screens. According to an ‘unnamed’ source within the company”

Heres a hint, when you hear/read the words “may and unnamed” (in the same article no less), it basically is someone starting a rumor. You should know by now these blogs are not into the fact checking business

“It’s unfortunate that it’s Apple who has to be the one the up the ante in going to OLED displays on a large scale”

Yea, backbeat, totally agree with you. Nokia and others right now are quivering. They KNOW that Apple will be suing then. It’s so SUPER obvious that the more than a year-old Nokia OLEDs in the N85, the 6600 flip and others are obvious copies of the upcoming iPhone 3.

How shameless of Nokia to copy Apple’s upcoming handset – Espoo must be super desperate!

You’ve always been able to read documents on an iphone. You either never have had an iphone or don’t have fingers, because the feature is there… hater

OLED displays are the inevitable future of display tech. They’re just better all the way around. So I can definitely see this happening. One of the big handset makers is going to make this jump sooner or later.

Hater, not hardly, I owned one for a year, gave it a chance kept waiting on the promises from Apple, but to no avail they failed, I do not need to watch the keynote, cause I could care less what they put out I aint buying what they b a selling, if you are happy about every announcement that they put out great, they have done nothing to impress me other than get people to buy into a product and pay an outrageous price for it, that is called good marketing.

@Pete Belk, Well son last time i check iphone supports push from Microsoft exchange just fine, it also supports push from Mobileme so i really dont’s see what’s your point. Windows mobile phones are way more open and easy to customize than the Apple platform but let’s face it, it sucks, i’ll say 90% of iPhone users have had already owned a blackberry or a Windows mobile phone and they know that it feels like and trust me they don’t wanna go back. As per JD power

Well son I owned one, did not like the paid mobileme service, for me the BlackBerry suits my needs, I dont need all that other crap that you have to pay for just to get the ICrap up to speed with other phones.

And Son, I dont go by what critics say about a device to get me to buy it, I guess you listen to movie critics to, so that you know what movie to go see.

It is funny as heck when Apple comes out with something new, all of the followers think that Apple invented that particular technology, its been around for years, but because Apple is doing it, it becomes the greatest thing since sliced bread.
