Next round of Apple handsets and netbooks to sport OLED displays?
A report this morning from Australian tech magazine Smarthouse suggests Apple may have selected a series of OLED displays for its next round of handset and netbook screens. According to an unnamed source within the company, initial fruits of the company’s newly awarded display contract with LG will be an entirely new set of OLED screens that will make their way into Apple’s upcoming iPhone and iPod Touch models, as well as a new and often-rumored Apple netbook. The move would certainly go a great length to help somewhat lackluster battery performance, especially considering the variety of added battery-sucking features that were announced at Apple’s 3.0 event this past Tuesday. So what do you guys think about the possibility of a sexy new capacitive OLED display on the inevitable iPhone / iPod Touch models due in June or July?

Good news. More efficeint screen would make the battery last longer which will extend the life of the battery.
LG is making quite a big investment into the screen capabilities.
The development for a screen that doesn retain body oil/fingerprints is going to be interesting too.

It’s unfortunate that it’s Apple who has to be the one the up the ante in going to OLED displays on a large scale. This will only serve as additional hate-fuel for the simpleminded who refuse to think outside their cubical. If the additional 3.0 features are all what they’re cracked up to be, I may have to add this to my list of the phones to be considered this year.

I don’t know about this report, I’m still not buying the idea that Apple is making a touchscreen netbook. A concept would outprice the netbook standards by 200%. An 10″ OLED iPod Touch Tablet perhaps?

honestly if apple and verizon would have been able to make an agreement, there would be no reason for at&t at all. at least around where i live anyway.
hopefully it’ll just “bolt in” as it were to my old one. why buy a new one if the screen fits the same hole…
at least Apple is willing to admit to shortcomings and works on them…

Yeah, seriously, big woop. I mean it’s neat if it’s true, but in the grand scheme of things, does it change the paradigm? No. Battery life will stay the same, and the phone will get thinner thanks to being able to last the same ammount of time on a smaller battery. Or it will have the same case thickness and a few extra NAND memory chips (because it has been an awful long time in Apple-years since the iPhone has gotten a memory bump). That’s been the game for the past five years now. Someone did “research” to find out what the least amount of battery life was that people could live with, and they stripped the battery down as far as they could, because for the most part the battery is the biggest component in your phone (except maybe the iPhone and other similar devices with big screens).
I think there’s a big chance that they will go with a OLED screen, first cause it will improve battery life by a lot and 2nd, cause it might give them a tiny bit of more space for a bigger battery.
@Pete Belk, let me know when your phone gets web browsing capabilities i mean it’s 2009 you know? lol.
Simple minds deserve simple phones.
First of all I do not buy a phone so I can surf the web, I buy it for functionality, talking to people or communicating through sms, mms, or push email.
If I need to surf the web I have desktop at home and laptop for work.
I call BS on this article – The high cost to make a OLED display right now is enough for me to call this article, Another Fruitless Apple Rumor.
3.0 is what i need
Working spreadsheets, copy and paste, security, updating my contacts while on the go, not attaching it to a computer and waiting, even though I have that option. I do not buy a phone to download a crap load of games, I use it for business purposes, I do download music through Itunes onto my BlackBerry.
I owned an ICRAP for a year, did nothing that the BlackBerry would do straight out of the box, and I waited a year for this revolutionary device to become revolutionary and I see after 2 years they are just now getting what BlackBerry had for years, oh but wait if you own the 1st gen ICRAP then you are SOL, for the 3.0 update, you have to purchase a new ICRAP to get that.
@Pete Belk, well the iphone has had free push email from yahoo since day one and SMS from AT&T from day one, MMS is running late but it will be added shortly. I’ll tell you something there’s no way in hell i’ll pay any carrier for a data plan if i wasn’t using the phone for web browsing. I don’t want my phone to do 100 things all bad i’ll prefer it to do 30 and do all of them really good and then make it’s way slowly to 100.
