AT&T bringin’ sexy back, offering iPhone 3G at no-commitment price, no activation

Time to clear out some inventory, boys! AT&T, starting March 26th, is going to start offering the 8GB and 16GB iPhone 3Gs at a no-commitment price. These prices are $599 and $699 respectively. The good news is that you do not need to perform an activation/unbrick at the point of purchase, so you can buy the devices for your grandma, your best friend, or for half of China before you head back home. There’s a limit of “one per line” which makes us think you’ll need an active AT&T line to purchase an iPhone (AT&T stores typically don’t sell you no-contract phones unless you provide them with an active line of yours), but the presentation also says that they basically have no way of tracking this. Still, at $599 and $699, are these going to move? Time will tell. Hit the jump for some more shots of the presentation we got a hold of!

Seriously, why would you buy this no-commit option when it’s cheaper to just pay the cancellation fee when you want to leave?

AGAIN……JUST BUY A “UNLOCKED”, NO CONTRACE, 16GB 3G iPHONE OFF E-BAY….ABOUT 400/500 BUCKS, POP IN YOUR ATT/TMOBIL OR WHATEVER SIM, AND GO HAVE iPHONE FUN. FOR PEOPLE USING ATT, U MIGHT GET A NASTY LETTER SAYING U CAN’T USE THE iPHONE UNLESS U HAVE A ATT GOUGE iPHONE DATA PLAN, HOWEVER, BASED ON FTC (FAIR TRADE COMMISSION) LAWS, ATT CAN NOT FORCE U TO CHANGE DATA PLANS, AND U CAN USE WHATEVER PHONE U WANT, AS LONG AS THE UNIT U R USEING IS FCC APPROIVED.

DON’T LET ATT (YOUR BULLY PHONE SERVICE COMPANY) BULLY U……USE YOUR “UNLOCKED” iPHONE WITHOUT WORRY……AS LONG AS U PAY YOUR BILL…. :-)

Actually, by law, ATT has to give you an unlock code, even if the phone was purchased under a “subsidized agreement”.

Total extra cost of owning an iphone is 24*30+199 = 919 and 1119 if you buy iphone for 399 and add 100 more for 16gb one. These number are for people donot want data plan. So the new price is justifing, one could save more than 300 over 2 years. And could attract more people.

May be this move is to clear inventory to accomodate new iphone models.

I need the data plan anyway. so the no commit price doesn’t make any sense to me.
    ——————————————–
600-700 & still locked with AT&T, just doesn’t make sense. Even if it is officially unlocked by ATT, the only other possible carrier is t-mobile. iPhone doesn’t support t-mobile 3g (tmobile uses 1700MHz 3g spectrum).

    Best options are:
    >Buy pre activated iphone off of ebay and continue with existing plan

    >Buy iphone with subsidized price and somehow un-subscribe from data plan (as I did)

I’m seeing a lot of people comparing the cost of an 8GB phone at the subsidized price (+ETF, activation etc.) with that of the no-commit 16GB phone, which is apples and oranges. More to the point, a lot of people don’t qualify for the subsidized price (they’re midway through a contract or whatever), so they don’t have that option anyway.

Seems like the math would be more interesting if you used the price of a 16GB phone that is sold without subsidy but with a two-year contract.

So i have heard that a lot of AT&T customers are able to activate service, cancell within 30 days, not pay the data plan, activation fee nor the ETF and still they get the phone and dont have to saty with AT&T. Has anyone else heard the same?

att does not offer unlock codes for the devices we sell. you can find them online or from the manufacturer. you forget one major point, the phone carriers do not sell phones, we sell service. so its up to you to unlock your phone.

    ISellPhones says:

ok…if you were to buy an iphone 3g at the 199upgrade price and then after a few months cancel the line…the phone would cease to work. Even with a diff. sim card, the phone would be able to make calls but u would have no access to the internet except in wifi areas. Seems like an awful lot of trouble and money to get a phone and then knowingly make it less functional. If your a cheap a$$ then go to verizon. They give you free (crappy) phones.

Also, someone asked if at&t provides ondemand phone unlocks…

you must be joking….why the hell would at&t waste their time and money so that you could cancel the contract and use with another provider. i mean, seriously.

And, for ppl bitching about the $30 data plan…would u like to see how much your bill would be without the data plan..haha….you would then be charged .01 cents for every gb of data transfered. This would add up to hundreds maybe thousands of bucks at the end of the month. I’ll take $30 anyday.

    Psyop1 says:

Data is still required on all iPhones, commitment or not. ATT scans their network, even if you use a different SIM (such as a gophone), and then will send you a text message giving you the “opportunity” to add data if they detect your iPhone. If you don’t do it yourself, they will do it for you. Must have data. I think it’s stupid and illegal, but it’s what they do.

What would happen if i bought the phone on the internet but never activated it, then canceled the contract after 30 days? I would only have to pay the etf and not a first month bill since i never activated it right?

Can someone post a link to the law that law that says AT&T has to unlock iPhones.

Because here’s an alternate link where AT&T says they will *never* unlock your iPhone, even if you purchase it without contract.

    http://tinyurl.com/attsayfu

So why the hell would anyone buy a locked phone, even without contract, if you can’t use it with anyone else?

Are you referring to my earlier question? Who says i will call att to unlock it? I can still use the phone thru tmobile even if it’s not on 3G. Refer back to my previous post if you misunderstood my point.

First of all at&t has a contract with Apple for the next three years for exclusive rights to the iphone, so what is the point of buying one and then not getting any service on it? It won’t WORK on another carrier and won’t be supported as it should.
Second, the no committment pricing is for Customers who do indeed drop their device or have the dog chew it up and can’t qualify for another iphone as an upgrade option.
Thirdly, the ppt shown here is incorrect and should most likely be taken off the site, it only causes consumer confusion.
I see several posts here from COR store reps and now I feel sorry for them when they have a consumer come in looking for this device with the impression they can just outright buy it and take it elsewhere. Sorry gang not for another three years will Apple release this for support elsewhere. It happens with ALL carriers and ALL carriers have a catch, it’s the way of the world of telecommunications and business. Deal with it or don’t buy it your choice!
