AT&T bringin’ sexy back, offering iPhone 3G at no-commitment price, no activation

Time to clear out some inventory, boys! AT&T, starting March 26th, is going to start offering the 8GB and 16GB iPhone 3Gs at a no-commitment price. These prices are $599 and $699 respectively. The good news is that you do not need to perform an activation/unbrick at the point of purchase, so you can buy the devices for your grandma, your best friend, or for half of China before you head back home. There’s a limit of “one per line” which makes us think you’ll need an active AT&T line to purchase an iPhone (AT&T stores typically don’t sell you no-contract phones unless you provide them with an active line of yours), but the presentation also says that they basically have no way of tracking this. Still, at $599 and $699, are these going to move? Time will tell. Hit the jump for some more shots of the presentation we got a hold of!

Anybody know whether, like every other phone AT&T offers at full price, whether they will provide on demand carrier unlocks?

its cheaper to buy the phone activate it and then pay the 200 early termination fee.

last week my stepmom dropped her phone in some wet grass and bought one for 400 with no contract…sup with the math?

There’s a catch to this. COR store rep’s already know NOT to sell the iPhone at no commitment cost to NON-at&t customer’s. Basically if you don’t already have existing service, they’re not selling it to you. Same way it goes now if you go in to purchase any phone right out.

Easy. She signed another contract if she got an 8Gb for $399. Whether that was explained to her or not is another story. But it happened.

Ok let me get this out, HELL NO!

Now, why would anyone buy the iPhone for that price. Its a nice phone but there is no way its worth that price. I have no idea who would think it would be a good idea to buy the iPhone at that price.

Oh and quick question, how does this compare to signing for AT&T getting the iPhone and then cancelling you contract?

Microcell + monthly service to use your broadband + mandatory data plan = fail.

Btw, this price is not as outlandish as an unlocked iPhone 3G overseas, which goes for over $1000 some places.

I don’t really get it, how does it attract more people to get an iPhone?

    1. You have to be existing at&t customer.
    2. You are required to have data plan.
    3. This I am not quite sure, this will be a locked phone still.

People seem to forget that when the first iPhone 2G was released it was $499 and $599 respectively, had less features AND still required the 2 year contract. I now that I sold several iPhones for even more than that so people will most certainly be purchasing these at this price.

I don’t have an AT&T account and I’m glad they wouldn’t let me buy one outright. Who do they think they’re fooling charging more than signing up new and paying an ETF?

What a bunch of absolute morons.

    Levell says:

You have to remember that it is not as simple as just canceling the contract and paying the ETF fee which is $175 per line. You also must pay a prorated portion of your bill, activation fee, blah blah blah….which adds up…..

No one isn’t forgetting it required a two year contract because it simply didn’t. You could easily buy a first generation iPhone and use it on prepaid for the same $499 and $599 price as contracted customers. The same held true when Apple dropped the price by $200.

    G Singh says:

Price with 2year contract ($199) + Ist month bill & activation (about $100) + Cancellation fee ($175) = 474. Which is still cheaper than this 600.
