PC sales jump in February as Mac continues to decline
No, we’re not exactly out of the water just yet but growth in any market these days is definitely a diamond in the rough. The NPD Group released its February numbers yesterday and with both Apple and Microsoft still spending major ad dollars, PC and Mac computers saw remarkably different results. PC units sales jumped 22 percent year over year in February and revenue crept up 1.4 percent. In stark contrast, Mac unit sales were down a steep 16.7 percent and revenue dropped off a cliff, down 23.3 percent — this the month after Apple refreshed its laptop lineup, by the way. Ouch. Did Microsoft’s retaliatory “I’m a PC” ad campaign provide OEMs the adrenaline shot Microsoft was hoping for? Maybe. The simplest explanation is most often the correct explanation however, and February’s numbers likely boil down to dollars and cents. The average selling price of a PC in February was $555 while the average price of admission for a shiny new Mac was a whopping $1,500. In other words you can almost score three new PCs for the price of a Mac. Amidst a recession, the numbers speak for themselves.

Doesn’t matter how much they made…they still have to account for all the unsold shit sitting in the warehouses Eric and that offsets whatever profits they made by selling their 2 MACs lol…This is what MS has been championing and illustrating for a while and looks to be coming true.
completely agree: due to dollars and cents==> same reason why more people would get their groceries at walmart, rather than whole foods during a recession. osx is better product (in my opinion), and whole foods offers healthier food choices (my opinion), but people get frugal.
im collecting unemployment, can’t afford health insurance,….and Im a pc lol
I have a Window laptop and a macbook. There are things that I like about both of them and things that I do not like about both of them. We all have to buy the pc or mac that meets our needs. What’s important to me is not important to someone else. Today after using pcs for years, I like the mac more. In the future who knows…I like what I am seeing with windows 7. I really like the netbooks, I can see adding that to the stable at some point.
In a tight economy it would be hard to put down the money for a macbook vs a pc if cost was the only criteria. If you have other criteria that drives your purchase besides price then your buying decision might change.
I am PC.
I am faster than Mac, can be better looking than Mac, can do everything that Mac can and a lot more that Mac can’t, have all features of Mac and some more, more reliable and have a superior OS. Oh, did I tell you that I cost 1/2 of Mac?
Yes, I am PC.
Let’s just wait and see the March numbers. . .something tells me that new hardware will work wonders for hardware sales, especially since many were delaying purchases until after the refresh.
Personally, I bought a Vista desktop and a MBP last month. Of course, I’m not as price sensitive as most of you tools that live in your mom’s basement and work at VZW.
@Fanboys
Shut the f**k up, stop buying expensive, overrated and underperforming crap, and join the hardworking, unexpensive, reliable PC’s.
Guys we forgive you, and we welcome you back to PCLand!
I think there’s something that most everyone is overlooking. Most Mac sales continue to be to individuals and media centric people, where the PC still has the majority of the business/corporate market. The economy has had a more profound effect on individuals and some businesses are still purchasing IT.
“The simplest explanation is most often the correct explanation however”
If you’re gonna rip off the theory of Occum’s Razor, at least credit it as such
” a rediculous sum of money f”
I guess pee-cees don’t have a spell checker. “RIDICULOUS”
@Perspective, you are also evidently not as sharp as many others here, given the silly assumptions you’ve made. Simple thoughts from a simple mind.
You forgot that the one mac for $1500 that’s three times the cost of the average PC can only use 10% of the hardware and software of the PC.
good point. Perhaps … too good. I know I held off on getting an iMac last holiday season for that exact reason.
PC ROCKS!!!! Ha ha!
Obviously most of u guys are nerds cause u use ur PC’s for gaming, so u don’t know what a MAC can do. I’ve gone through 3 PC’s before I found out MAC is better. So some of u haters need to actually use a MAC before you knock it.
For a side note MAC’s make better commercials then PC.
LOL…What a riot. PC’s sales are up, because you need to buy a new one every couple of years; they’re a POS. Mac’s last, PC’s don’t.
Don’t get me wrong though. Thank God there are PC’s and Windows…if there weren’t, I’d be out of a job LMAO….
last time i checked pc’s and mac’s were the same hardware. clearly it is cheaper to buy a non-apple computer (”pc”) and then buy the apple OSX software and load it on that computer, which would be signficantly cheaper than buying from apple. LOL this is why apple is tied up in a lawsuit right now…. if they lose, all hell will break loose as companies such as dell, hp, etc. will kill them in sales with their own operating system. that would be the kicker of all times!!!!
What are you talking about? It’s the same exact hardware. You just got Oontzed by Apple
Perhaps this will be a mild slap in the face fpr Apple and they’ll lower their prices (wishful thinking?)
Seriously though, if Apple would sell their computers for, say, 900 bucks then they would surely monopolize the computer market again.
Get with it Apple!
Little Girl: “Daddy..what is that man doing?
Father: “Ssshhhh, honey, he’s a homeless man…he’s urinating where he sleeps, and HE IS A PC”
LOL
nothing is compatible with a mac. and if you want it to be you have to pay more money on top of the money you already paid that is obviously – on the average – higher than most win/pc-nb’s. whats the point? it will never be a mac world. hippies.

LOL..Spoken like a true moron. What exactly isn’t compatible? I connect to a Windblows network, play music, rip CD’s/DVD’s, watch movies, run Office for Mac and share files with staff. Never had a compatibility issue.
Unless you know what you’re talking about, you should go back to your Mom/Dad’s basement, and continue to pirate your games and such, and leave real computing to professionals…
Quick run down for the gamer nerds: pc 1500 bills not including monitor (alienware, firebird) spyware adware 150 repairs bout 200 (cause they still will get a virus) hd monitor (for gaming nerds) 300. Seems a lot more then a mac too me.
I’M a mutha*#@!?:) MAC
And for some of you 40 year old virgins who build your own PC get a life, better yet get laid.
I’M a mutha*#@?!B) MAC
@ notapc
RFLMAO….That was a hit!!!!
