Apple iPhone 3.0 OS event March 17th, we got some info

So it looks like Apple’s planning on holding an event for iPhone 3.0 OS March 17th along with showing off an updated SDK. This would fit nicely with their brief history of having a preview software event followed by a hardware refresh in June/July. As far as what we’ve been told of iPhone 3.0, here’s what we’ve got:
- MMS
- Tethering via Bluetooth and USB
We’re working hard to get some more information and know that our list above isn’t exactly thorough, but hey, it’s something! Plus, there has to be copy and paste, right?

1. Adobe Flash please!
2. Adobe Flash, Flash and more Flash!
2. Bluetooth Stereo
3. copy-and-paste
4. portrait/landscape keyboard in all apps
5. built-in voice recorder
6. MMS – this century
7. better VPN
8. better MS-Office and MS-Exchange integration
Took ‘em long enough. Took, what, two years? My first personal phone (as opposed to the family cell phone) had picture messaging, and that was just over four years ago! Even with MMS, I still don’t want it. The OSK isn’t good enough for the kind of use I put it through. I’ve used a QWERTY Thumb-board, T9, and the iPhone OSK (on an iPod Touch), and it’s easily the slowest of the three inputs. Maybe if I only did SMS, or very short e-mails (like one or two sentences) it might be OK, but not for the volume I do.
If the OS multi-tasks, or finally brings in the promised push notification system, then I might care. But at the moment, I can’t have an instant messenger open *and* browse the web? That’s just dumb. Again: even my first phone could have the IM program open while I did other stuff, and that wasn’t even a smartphone! It was a Moto v557! The Nokia 6102 can do that too… and the RAZR, LGs since time immemorial, Samsungs… the list just goes on.
@StevenGlansburg Speaking as someone who has Copy/Paste on their phone, you’ll use it a lot more than you think. I’m constantly copy/pasting stuff into messages, like TinyURLs, quotes, phone numbers (from my address book), and often just highlighting a block of text for speedy deletion. It’s one of those things you really don’t realize how useful it is until you’ve had it, and then you lost it.
Oh there’ll be a charge, like when you went from 1.0 to 2.0….
Always a charge..
I want background services. GPS is one example – and I think you’ll see it because Google needs a background service to run Google Latitude on the iPhone – people wont launch the App each time they want to turn on their location.
@ GameRadar:
What charge are you talking about??? We are talking about the iPhone here, not the iPod touch.
There was never a charge! Unless of course you are talking about the iPod. As far as I know iPhone users never had to pay anything for any firmware upgrades. iPod touch users…another story
It’s about time!!! Your run of the mill free upgrade can perform MMS but this “marvel” won’t. It’s about time Apple pulled it’s head outta it’s A$$ and got MMS on the iPhone!!!!
Apart from the stuff that thr others have mentioned (blurtooth tethering, vopy & paste and MMS), I’d personaly like SMS forwarding.
I’ve just about sorted all the Jail Break apps now ie. bluetooth and mms. They better be bringing some fancy apps to the table with this upgrade instead of another attempt to restrict the use of non apple certified apps.
who cares about copy and paste? how often would you really use it?
^It’s a petty, lame-duck issue. Just ask any experienced WinMo user how long they’ve been waiting for an ‘X’ = Close” function within the OS. 10 years … and counting.
try forwarding a text message…. everyone’s seemed to miss that one out
any chance of this thing being able to eam files via bluetooth. almost any 5 year old phone can do this…
what about a2dp profile ? worlds best and most sold mp3 player manufacturer can only do mono audio ? that’s pretty dumb …
what about a damn landscape keyboard for texting???? seriously
If there is MMS, I’ll be happy. If there’s tethering via USB, I’ll be even happier. If there’s Landscape SMS (Widescreen texting), I’ll be so proud to have the iPhone, that anyone who shows me something other than the iPhone will be given the advice to SWITCH to the iPhone ASAP!
I can sort of excuse Apple for not including certain hardware revisions however, simple things like something as easy as retooling the friggin’ keyboard to type in landscape and not giving copy/paste,MMS, and so on, that’s just unexcusable. I mean come on, are you guys THAT focused on the the iPod or i-Whatever that you can’t fix little things on your one and ONLY best selling phone ? It’s such a great device, I just wish they’d update it at the same pace that people like Blackberry churn out their updates.
my list in order of preference
Voice dialing through BT headset (very very strange to not see it all over the boards, make so many safer drivers and soooo nice to use)
Stereo BT
Landscape email
Better battery life
BT calendar auto sync (for those of us in corps that don’t want to allow enterprise access)
Push messaging
Free or pay per use tethering (for those infrequent emergencies)
Flash
Auto music fill (guess iTunes 8.1 got that)
Copy and past ( must work to copy calendar bridge pass codes to phone)
MMS
Faster 3g so far I usually beat coworkers 3g iPhones with my edge and have way less dropped calls!!!!!!!
It Is About Time That Apple Put MMS On The IPhone
Well I heard alot of complaints about G1 when it came out about no mms, video recorder, flash player among other things. Personally I can’t understand apple charging so much for our iPhones and NOT give us atleast all the functions that any cheap crappy free phone like the razr will do. Come on apple… Keep up
@PhoneFan33:
“please add a time stamo for every sms that is sent/recieved”…
Well, it does already.
3.0 –> thank god !
going to be a looooooooooong week……
That is amazing isn’t it. A smart phone without cut and paste? I have the phone and love it, but why it skipped some basics I can not figure out.
Why not the following Software features?
-SMS forwarding
-MMS (although i prefer to email pics)
-Bluetooth file transfer (to print photos direct from phone)
-Wireless Sync over WiFi (for handiness sake)
-Copy and Paste (for the odd email)
-Turn by Turn direction in Maps w/voice prompt option.
-Summary homescreen – to show new email/sms/app updates
-Crude photo editing eg: fix orientation of photo (how many times have you had the phone flip a pic in the wrong direction?!)
-Voice Dialing option – similar to Google’s voice search using the accelerometer to activate it
Hardware features for iPhone 3.0
- 3-5 Megapixel Camera
- 16-32Gb Memory
- fm radio (or an apple radio app free as standard)
- increased screen resolution (size is fine)
- thinner phone
- louder loudspeaker
If anything the next iPhone has to have some of the basic features that other Cellphones currently have. A lot of these could be software implemented for the older 2G and 3G iPhones, while a new iPhone 3.0 could add a few exlusive new hardware features…
Amen brother…They need to work on the basis first, like to forward a test, sending a picture to another phone instead to email where hald the time the passwords don’t work, etc
What’s the big deal about copy/paste? I’ve had my iPhone for a year and a half and I got by without it. Dexterity guys, you have to have those fingers to do the job.
Keep that piece of crap blackberry who really cares about copy and paste.
