Apple iPhone 3.0 OS event March 17th, we got some info

So it looks like Apple’s planning on holding an event for iPhone 3.0 OS March 17th along with showing off an updated SDK. This would fit nicely with their brief history of having a preview software event followed by a hardware refresh in June/July. As far as what we’ve been told of iPhone 3.0, here’s what we’ve got:

  • MMS
  • Tethering via Bluetooth and USB

We’re working hard to get some more information and know that our list above isn’t exactly thorough, but hey, it’s something! Plus, there has to be copy and paste, right?

Anything worthwhile for iPod touch users?

Think they’ll allow 1st-gen iPhone/iPod touch users to upgrade, or will they try to push them to new hardware?

i hope there are improvements to the predictive text and finally a lateral keyboard for email as well… I love the iPhone, but seriously, focus on the clearly needed basic items before spending time on the new stuff. hello? hello? is this thing on? hello?!?!

@Ankit, What good does copy and paste do to your (smart phone) if you can’t use it to browse the web? lol, the iphone is missing a ton of common stuff found on normal phones but it also does a lot of stuff other phones can’t do like browsing the internet without chocking on it, something others haven’t been able to do in a decade.

Yeah, Push is missing from your list. That’s probably the biggest thing that will be coming. Copy/paste might come, but Apple’s history says otherwise.

For a company that usually leaves older product owners in the dust, Apple has really been working hard with software updates. I mean even the Gen1 iPhon is still a really great phone today, just no 3G. MMS + tethering would be perfect. Maybe some improvements to the email app as well, some speediness and battery life improvements, and then i’ll be a happy camper!

Of course, what I’m really looking forward to is the new hardware!

Personally I think that they iPhone is a great media/internet browsing device but needs much improvement in other areas. I would like to see some substantial updates beyond those which we expected it to have from jump. Personally I am more interested in a device that increases my productivity than a device that keeps me entertained. But that’s just a personal opinion. I would like to see this software include video recording, mms, copy paste, third party background notifications, bluetooth tethering and streaming bluetooth. I would not purchase another iPhone thru AT&T because their network is a joke but I do think that the millions who already have the iPhone will appreciate updates that will help them me productive as well.

We get something that the other phones have had for years and get excited? landscape typing and flash for me. oh – and fix the 3G hang ups! The signal is faked high, but I blame ATT for much of that also. The phone mechanics are great, hopefully they’ll get their heads straight and get the software needed to compete. I’m looking for the HTC new releases though as I’ve grown disappointed with Apple. ed
