Apple iPhone 3.0 OS event March 17th, we got some info

So it looks like Apple’s planning on holding an event for iPhone 3.0 OS March 17th along with showing off an updated SDK. This would fit nicely with their brief history of having a preview software event followed by a hardware refresh in June/July. As far as what we’ve been told of iPhone 3.0, here’s what we’ve got:

  • MMS
  • Tethering via Bluetooth and USB

We’re working hard to get some more information and know that our list above isn’t exactly thorough, but hey, it’s something! Plus, there has to be copy and paste, right?

What about finally implementing a subscription mechanism? Some developers stay away because the technology (aka: costs) of providing their service cannot support unlimited use for life, for a fixed one-time price – not an affordable one, anyway.

If they could charge less up front, but continue generating revenue over time from each user (to support the service) this would open the floodgates for more complex and useful apps, while keeping them affordable.

Advertising in the app is not a solution – the paltry, uncertain returns don’t justify the resources needed to create the app. It would be much better if there was a mechanism so that users could continue to pay for functionality they find useful.

    Comments, anyone?

MMS & copy and paste a definate plus. How about the ability to forward a SMS? Change the appearance of widgets? The ability to get rid of unused widgets like the stocks widget? Better camera options (or cam options period!) Is it me? I love my iPhone, but my razr from 7 years ago does things this phone simply does not.. FED UP!

Cut and paste yes, but how about multitasking? When can I run Fring in the background? I’m seriously considering jailbreaking to get this. When I’m traveling I need to stay on IM AND read my email, not OR!

That statement doesn’t really make any sense. MMS and E-mail really have two different uses and both are convenient under different circumstances. if your argument made sense then wouldnt sms become obsolete too??? well its not b/c it has a different use than e-mail.

MMS is very likely, along with tethering and C&P.

Flash is unlikely and the ability to download something right from the internet is almost certainly a no.

What I’m hoping for is a signal in the top menu bar that informs the user if their phone is on silent.

Is there any news on what will be offered if anything in terms of improvements for Ipod touch users not, as I know some updates will benefit Ipod touch users but I am wondering whether there would be anything specific for the upod touch user or whether this is something I will have to wait for?

Ok, so after reading every post in this article I cannot understand why more people haven’t mentioned landscape keyboarding. It is SO ridiculous that I have to type with my forefinger to send an email or text on my $200.00 phone. COME ON get with the times apple!
As far as copy/paste I’d take it but probably rarely ever use it.
MMS is a must! I’m too embarrased to tell my buddies that my fancy iphone can’t receive their MMS messages.
Tethering, whatever you know that there will be an additional charge, no thanks my at&t bill is already high enough. I’ll keep my broadband.
I’ll take anything that I can get for it, but we’ve got to have the basics!

    Clintster out!

What do you really need to copy/paste on an iphone? I can see myself using this maybe once a year.

Copy and Paste? You ask why we need copy and paste??? Hello, haven’t any of you surfed a website and needed to copy and paste the info into an email or contact list or how about the DIAL PAD!! For example I’m looking up the phone number of a restaurant: find it, copy and paste, tada!
As everyone mentioned landscape mode is a MUST, my fingers are flat at the tips, well not much of a tip. Secondly how about a Delete “button” in addition to the backspace button.

why are people paying to upgrade their iPod Touch? you can get it for free, and i’m suprised there isn’t more info out there on how this is done(and no, i’m not talking about some sort of jailbraking). i’ve been doing it for every update and never paid on my iPod Touch

And i’ll say it again, Apple is great at stringing along their users…

I’d immediately pay $50 just for tethering support.

When I’ve done that, I won’t quit telling everyone I had to pay $50 for a feature which should have been an integral part of the 2.0 firmware already.

Anyway, I don’t believe tethering will be included in the 3.0 update – I’ll wait and see.

    Well

what I would like to see it’s a DECENT program to navigate…

why the heck it’s not possible to have a tom tom, garmin or similar program in the iphone…

why I have to spend another 100-200 bucks for a navigator, when the iphone have all the HW that it need, and a big screen!?!!!!

    Come on!!!!
they can do TONS of money with a navigator program, and selling updated maps via the app store…

this is what really surprise me most…

I really like the Copy and Pasted Java bookmarklet hack, so I don’t care about that, but a search feature for email and web word searches would be a no brainer. I mean, no word search for the mail app is just plain stupid. I have thousands of emails and I don’t have time to scroll through them all to find a specific business email. Lame.

Now I wished I waited for this iphone 3.0. But I do hope it has mms, video recording, and forwards of text messaging, landscape mode. I kinda like the predictive spelling they have now as compared to other phones. If they have those features then its a go getter.
