MetroPCS launches its first BlackBerry Curve

MetroPCS is one of a few small carriers in the US currently surging on the back of ridiculously attractive unlimited plans. Despite the fact that its “hello, hello, helloooo” jingle haunts our dreams at night, it’s hard to argue that unlimited plans starting at $30 per month don’t make your ears perk up. With this latest play, BlackBerry fans finally have an option when considering MetroPCS. Sure, some may be deterred by the fact that the carrier is launching the Curve 8330 while AT&T has the Bold and is waiting on the Curve 8900, Verizon has the Storm and is waiting on the Niagra and T-Mobile has the Curve 8900 and is waiting on anything with 3G. Rest assured however, no one with any of those sexy new BlackBerry handsets is sporting a plan in the ballpark of $50 per month for unlimited everything including BIS (BES is an additional $10). The very same line of thinking also allows us to laugh off the high asking price for the handset — despite a brief appearance on the MetroPCS site at $349, the actual price is $449 — as the monthly savings will definitely add up fast. So, BlackBerry fans in the MetroPCS coverage areas, interest piqued?

I think its a great expedition and as the reception coverage increases, we should see more people signing up with the service. Who wouldn’t? It is not too convenient now as when leaving your coverage area roaming you are charged about 19 cents per minute.

Goddamnit, Metro is NOT prepaid. It’s a post paid service, except you don’t have to be tied to a contract.

I couldn’t agree with you more! I thought they were GSM until I saw this BB phone 8330, clearly indicating it is CDMA based model. Oh, well I won’t be switching to them anymore.

@ Mike M Metro PCS is prepaid. When you start service they give yiu a freen month. thats why you think its not pre paid. If it was not pre npaid they would not turn your phone off the day after it is due. They cut you off so quickly because you did not pay for the service for that billing cycle yet.

My question is can you send in a CDMA Curve from Verizon or Sprint to be flashed by MetroPCS for use on their network? I know you can flash other phones…

DS, At this time you wont be able to flash a sprint or Verizon Cruve to MetroPCS. And even if you was able to do this. The web, blackberry messenger, and internet wont work at all. So $400 dollars looks like a better deal then the other carriers price this blackberry at (1 or 2 year contracts) and the outrages data plans that is ALSO need from att, verizon, sprint, and t-mobile… for this phone to work.

Does anyone know if you can use your Sprint Blackberry Curve on this plan? Metro flashes sprint phones to their network *even blacklisted* so if this is the case, you can find a cheap one on ebay and have it flashed at the local metro store….

I went to purchase it yesterday, and I realized that current price is $450. Metro PCS promoted it for $349…I don’t like it. I’ll wait until they drop the price.

Why do people assume because you see no point in paying big bucks for cellular service and rather not be tied down in a contract you can’t afford to do anthing else?? Like really. I have metro pcs and even thinking about boost mobile. I can do whatever “I” want money wise. Being naive if not a good look. :-)

Yes you can have your sprint BB or Palm or Verizon Flashed with internet capabilities. It’s been figured out. Just ask around who does it or reseasrch online.

I totally disagree with the concept that people who have MetroPcs are on a low budget. I have a Metro and I hold a Verizon line for travel just in case Metro has no service there. With My blackberry with Metro and my 39.99 per month Verizon I am right at $100.00. With Verizon alone unlimited with the blackberry plan you pay $150.00 plus. You do the math. Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure that one out! Metro Service in my area is by far no worse than any other service.

Actually no blackberrys are currently not supported for flashing as well as Motorola Qs or Palm Treos.

    Mario says:

yeah about Boost, First of it may have a nationwide coverage but does not have roaming services, since they are using old technology as Iden compared to Sprint(None Boost mobile phones), Verizon, and MetroPCS that use CDMA which is more spectral efficient and can carry more customers.

    Sabrina says:

All you people saying that blackberry are currently not supported for flashing, that is a big lie. However, many metro stores are not going to flash as soon as they hear/see you say/bring a blackberry. Especially if you call Customer Service, because they can tell you they do, but you have to look for someone who will do it cuz they won’t. So they ‘claim’.

***I’m trying to find someone who can flash my verizon curve 8330 to metro that will work with the blackberry plan.
