Motorola announces MC55 handsets

Yikes. Here at BGR, we’d like to think that the days of having to sacrifice looks and form to have a truly “business-oriented” handset are long over. Handsets like the Nokia E71 and HTC Touch Pro are fine examples of sexy business gear and it would be hard to argue RIM hasn’t stepped up its designs significantly. From the looks of things however, not everyone agrees that business phones for certain industries can be as attractive as they are functional. Case in point: Motorola’s new industrial MC5590 and MC5574 handsets. Looking like a cross between a 10-year-old Globalstar GSP-1600 satphone and the Alcatel Lego Phone, the MC55 brothers sport ruggedized cases and just about nothing else worth mentioning. Basically, the only way either of these handsets is going to be desirable is if you like to pretend you’re the boss of a Colombian cartel in an 80s movie. These puppies will drop some time in Q2 and your dreams will be one step closer to a reality.

These devices are symptomatic of what’s wrong with Moto. They were once an innovator and industry design leader. Now?

Somebody sat around a boardroom table and pitched this idea. And the suits at that table embraced this design rather than throw the pitchman out on his arse.

Why do people pretend they’re not at all familiar with the Symbol CE devices that these are obviously designed to compete with in the industrial market?

Even so, look at the design of those to be found in your link and then compare to the above subject matter. Be it industrial specific or general public, a better job probably could have been done it regards to the provided UI and physical appearance. Well, at least I think so. ^_^

What are you thinking? It’s obviously prentending to be the UPS guy, doesn’t fit columbian drug cartel one bit. Which is obviously what they’re made for, and they typically run custom apps, so the UI doesn’t matter.

^You don’t really expect an HTC-type effort to gloss-up the UI on Industrial-specific devices, do you? As for the exterior design, the same can be said for “ruggedized” laptops. They’re designed to take a beating, not to model lingerie. ;)

I like ‘em! I’m tired of frivolous phones that cater more to style than function. I want a handset that last, has all the speed and features I need, and is load and clear. You know… a phuckin’ phone for christ sake! Not another piece of jewelry…

I like how every single person bitching in here probably has not a single need in the world for these and guess what, their not made for any of you.

These are built strong for a reason.

It may be hard to understand, but slim and sexy phones aren’t designed for specific work places where devices are going to get bumped around.

Wow. Caaaaalllm doooown! It’s a blog, jeeezers. ^_^

And granted, yes, they’re not meant for the runway but that doesn’t mean people of rougher industries don’t want/can use something that is just as “stable” as the above but appear as wonderful and are just as easily useable as say a blackberry or a device with a UI that’s easier/faster to navigate through from out of the box.

Assuming one who would purchase something like the above is in such a rough and rugged industry, wouldn’t you think such would be even more applicable? You know, helping things go smoother and faster in harsher conditions?

In the entirety of the work force, a universal goal is to make things as easy and quick as possible. Should such be appropriate, then it should be done. That’s why these are so icky; because like most everything, it can be done/made better, you know? Note the iphone. (and no, I’m not a fanboy, to poor to be one haha*)

So chya. These are opinions ya’ll! Chiiilllll with the “effings.” There might be kids reading. haha* :)

    Zach Epstein says:

@jbannach Good call man, Moto really knocked it out of the park with this one. Massive form, TI-82esque design, 320×240 pixels ridiculously stretched out over 3.5 inches, 2G data, 2 mpxl cam… This thing really pushes industrial enterprise devices forward.

I wonder why RIM ever decided to do away with their blue plastic camera-less tinker toy design. The average businessman doesn’t want a better looking, more functional device right? Oh wait, he does.

And what about feature phones? They should all be DynaTACs. People don’t want more compact designs or more advanced functionality. Oh wait, they do.

But industrial enterprise users don’t want progress like other demographics, right? They’d rather keep paying for the same tired old bricks. Definitely.
