Apple to announce touchscreen netbook this summer?

According to The Commercial Times/DigiTimes, Apple has rounded up Taiwanese-based computer parts manufacturer Wintek to make displays for an upcoming touchscreen notebook. Rumors of a touchscreen Apple netbook are nothing new, but this one is quite specific in that it specifies that the displays will be passed along to Quanta who will be entrusted with the manufacturing of the netbook itself. Of course, details don’t mean a rumor has even the slightest bit of truth to it, but considering The Commercial Times/DigiTimes has a pretty decent track record (you know, when it’s not predicting Blu-ray Xbox 360s) and outed the first-gen iPhone, we’re willing to give this rumor the benefit of the doubt. As for when this alleged launch will happen, it is said that shipments should start in 2H of this year, meaning that there are still a few solid months left for everyone to speculate the hell out of this thing. But just think – Steve Jobs comes back to Apple in June, a new iPhone or two is expected, and a touchscreen netbook might be on its way. We’ll see…

If you call something that won’t cost less than 800 dollars a netbook. Mark my words there will be a catch.

IF this is true, and it is really a netbook, not just a $800 10″ MacBook, it could actually replace my MacBook when the time comes. I have a Mac Mini now, and so the MacBook is basically relegated to websurfing on the couch and writing papers for grad school in a coffee shop. When the MacBook finally dies, I don’t need a full MacBook to replace it anymore, but I am really happy with my Apple products, and would like to have an Apple netbook that lasts as long as the MacBook seems to be (going on 3 years now). I would be willing to pay a little more for it, but not $1000, since I could get a new MacBook for just a little more than that.

Why does everyone think a new iphone is coming? We would know if one was coming or not, it is submitted to FCC FAR BEFORE RELEASE, Iphone 2G and 3G were submitted to FCC in January of the year they were released. There is no new iphone coming, software update (I can haz mms/copy paste?) maybe, but not a new iphone.

    ya, we will see…

@ nategiggity: touchscreens may be old, but not running on MAC OS X they’re not. If X11 will be a touchscreen OS, then we got something interesting going on here cause they’d basically invent an entire new way of interfacing with a computer. Don’t think of just the OS X as being touchscreen, but rather think of where it could go. The possibilities are incredible and far beyond of what’s commercially out there regarding the touch screen interface. Ur probably basing ur opinion on running Vista on some 10″Ggigabyte well u need to stop that cause vista is not an operating system. So u’ve been given a wrong/incomplete impression of what a touchscreen interface can do. In fact, we ain’t seen nothin yet.

32 GB and 80 GB iphones will be out this summer. So maybe not a new form of the iphone, but more memory. And really why change it? Its still way more popular than anything else out there. LG, Samsung, and the like release “new” wannabe phones every 2 months, but they still aren’t chipping away at the iphone.

I am so pissed! Just great! This news comes the day after I purchase a HP mini netbook. Don’t want to backpack through South America with my new MBP so I figured a $300 netbook would be great for my globetrekking. No big deal. If Apple does come out with this, I guess I’ll just sell the HP and buy the Apple.

Good news but knowing Apple, they still gonna overprice it and make it above the average netbooks that are out right now.

@maxpayne79….just because it has the apple name on it doesn’t mean it is going to be revolutionary. sitting in front of a computer and lifting your hands to touch the screen is so cumbersome. just give me the old mouse and keyboard and i will go to town! oh, and i probably won’t be doing it on a mac!!

    Yawn .. says:

Just to clarify the iPhone is not the most popular device out there. Yeah it might get the fanbois all worked up (they are the only people buying it) Blackberry Curve has been the best selling smartphone for almost 4 months now .. might be the fact that it’s available on every carrier on the planet and is often well under $99.

A large touch tablet is not anything like a netbook. Maybe they are making a Folio type device that requires iPhone to function. Unless Apple can put out something sub $500 don’t even bother. Asus, Acer, and others are killing in this space.
