Acer considering its own app store?

It seems like everybody and their brother’s pet goldfish is jumping on the application store bandwagon these days. Google/Android, RIM, Microsoft, Samsung, Nokia and even Cydia have all announced online application stores for various mobile platforms. Acer may now be added to this ever-growing list as the company is reportedly considering adding an application store to its upcoming Windows Mobile handsets. Whether this comes to fruition remains to be seen as Acer is only at the “discussion” stage, trying to determine whether such an effort will be a viable asset to its phones. Regardless of Acer’s decision, Apple’s success with the App Store has propelled the on-device application marketplace light years forward and we can certainly count on more such announcements from a variety of sources in the near future.

    While an Acer app store would be a great addition to this lineup, I doubt it will be what many are hoping for in all of these renditions of Apple’s innovation. The price that Microsoft charges for their Windows Mobile SDK will put a damper on the array of creativity possible, and deter new developers from getting involved.

    Ugh.

    It makes sense that Apple, RIM, Nokia, Android, Palm, and Microsoft each have their own app store, because they’re the people who provide the operating system. Even Samsung at least designed the interface that their “widget store” apps will run in.

    But Acer? The hell? Why wouldn’t you just use Microsoft’s Windows Store?

    I’m really starting to think that Acer doesn’t really get how this whole “cell phone” thing works.

    I spend enough money on hardware, I won’t get excited about spending more money on applications I don’t absolutely need. If you’re listening Acer, you should have done something to make your WM phones appeal to buyers. Who on Earth would buy any of these phones with other companies putting out the same product with much more know-how???

    @Mog,
    ‘acer don’t understand how that cell phone thing works’? Is that right?
    I suppose they also didn’t know how the whole netbook thing works…right before they took Asus EePC and wiped the floor with it.
    I also suppose Acer became industry leaders by sheer accident?
    Is it only American Icons who have ‘visions’? Well, god bless.

    whats the point of having an app store when you dont even have your own OS?
