BlackBerry 8230 recalled by Bell already?

We don’t have all the details here, but we’ve confirmed that Bell has issued a recall on the freshly launched BlackBerry 8230. Both colors are affected, and while we’re not positive if every single handset is being recalled, we’ve been told it has something to do with how the handsets were flashed. We’ll update this when we get more information. Any Bell Pearl Flip users having any issues?

Thanks, to one of our ninjas!

UPDATE: We’re now hearing that customers won’t have to bother with returning any handsets. If you bought a handset with OS 4.6.1.162 you’ll get an SMS telling you to update your OS to the new build, 4.6.1.182. If you already have 4.6.1.182, you’re good to go. Stores are being sent updated units right away so sales shouldn’t be interrupted.

What is up with RIM and their buggy software lately? First the Pearl (8130), then the Storm, and now the Pearl flip? Isn’t RIM known for their reliability? I bought a Storm the day it came out, used it for a month and now it’s sitting on my desk, back to the Dare for me.

Verizon, RIM, whoever needs to release an official software update as .75 just doesn’t cut it. Leaked firmware isn’t much better.

I used to be a BB fan, but these missteps are making me hesitant. Let us hope they get it in gear.

This is what I don’t understand about the tons of BB fans out there. I can’t count the number of times I’ve heard people treat RIM as if they can’t do anything wrong and bash the hell out of other phones for having bugs. Yet RIM has been putting out buggy BB release after buggy BB release.

Indeed. When I used to sell phones I loved BB’s but everything went downhill with the CDMA Pearl, mind you they eventually fixed it with 4.5 but the delay was unacceptable. I don’t know how many times I updated customer’s phones with the leaked 4.5 from Bell because they really liked the idea of the Pearl, however, the execution was a little off.

And with regard to the iPhone, I wouldn’t know seeing as AT&T ignores my state (WY) and the surrounding states. I hope they buy Alltel here, but it looks like it’ll be US Cellular. I’m tired of CDMA’s chokehold here as the one GSM provider is local and can barely afford to put up towers, let alone bring us an iPhone.

To the guy from the philipeans, that’s the same in eastern Canada. I’m thinking that’s a more likely source.

right…because the iphone was released with no bugs at all right?

Sounds like just an OS update. Some of the first phones released get an update. No big deal.

RIM is fucking the cat pretty hard as of late. I am pretty stoked about getting rid of my BB for a Pre. RIM needs to wipe their idea that updating an OS from a decade ago over and over again makes for a decent phone.

If it was just a buggy OS they could fix it with OTA patches like Storm. Having to recall and re-flash devices sounds more like the permanent config data, like the radio calibration or something was not set properly. These are all built by contract manufacturers anyhow.

ever stop to think that maybe Bell fucked up?

Don’t the carriers usually get their first shipment early, and it is up to them to load the software they accepted for release? (remember that shot of storms being loaded by verizon).

“we’ve been told it has something to do with how the handsets were flashed” says the article. So it has nothing to do with a buggy OS, well it does, but the real problem is that the phones weren’t properly updated (flashed) before being sold. So the problem could very well be Bell’s.

ps. of course the pearl flip is a piece of shit, from the perspective of a regular smartphone user. I know folks where the pearl flip is thier first ever smartphone, they think it’s pretty kick ass for the price (price: hence why they never had a smartphone before).

Thank God, I am not in Canada and not using Pearl! lol :) )

Guys, I think its just a routine firmware upgrade for some flashing issues which usually doesn’t effect the functionality of the phone or the apps but the way the carrier transforms some of its bandwidth on the handset!

RIM really needs to expand their software development department. I understand that Apple is a much bigger company and are able to shift programmers around between projects, but RIM really needs to step up.

The Storm still doesn’t have a really decent and stable OS. The Bold still doesn’t have a stable OS. Users all over the world are scraping and clawing for leaked betas to try and get their phones working the way they want.

I’m running 4.5.0.133 on my 8330 and I can honestly say that this is the first version of 4.5 that I’ve really been happy with. Why have I had to wait over six months to be able to say this?

No, no, no, Rosco. You don’t understand. Apple launches updates to “improve, and enhance functionality” and are “attentive to changing customer needs”. RIM and Nokia on the other hand, launch OS updates because “they fracked up” and are “fracking over all their customers”.

Get with the program, Rosco: over here if Apple does it, it is amazing, revolutionary. If RIM or Nokia does it, it is lame :)
