Apple announces refreshed iMac, Mac Pro and Mac Mini
There you have it folks — done and done. The Apple Store is back up, new gear is live and credit card portals are wide open. Keeping things nice and simple, Apple has taken one of its two standard routes and simply tossed out a bunch of refreshes sans-hullabaloo. Here it is, now buy it. So what have we got?
iMac:
- $1199 (only 20″ model) – 2.66 GHz, 2GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 9400M, 320GB HD
- $1499 (24″) – 2.66 GHz, 4GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 9400M, 640GB HD
- $1799 (24″) – 2.93 GHz, 4GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GT 120, 640GB HD
- $2199 (24″) – 3.06 GHz, 4GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GT 130, 1TB HD
Mac Mini:
- $599 – 2.0GHz, 1GB 1066 MHz DDRS SDRAM, GeForce 9400M, 120GB HD, 8x SuperDrive, Mini DisplayPort, mini-DVI, 5 USB Ports, FireWire 800 Port
- $799 – 2.0GHz, 2GB 1066 MHz DDRS SDRAM, GeForce 9400M, 320GB HD, 8x SuperDrive, Mini DisplayPort, mini-DVI, 5 USB Ports, FireWire 800 Port
Mac Pro:
- $2499 – 2.66GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon 3500 processor, 3GB of RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GT 120, 640GB HD
- $3299 – Dual 2.26GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon 5500 processors, 6GB of RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GT 120, 640GB HD
Apple definitely gave its desktop lineup a bit of an adrenaline shot, though it really didn’t come through with anything too Earth-shattering. What do you guys think? On a completely overshadowed note, Apple is now offering a 1TB Time Capsule for $500 (500GB for $299) and the AirPort Extreme Base Station, now capable of running two networks simultaneously, will run you $179 (old model is going for $159).

The new iMac?- more like face-lifted iMac. With no Blu-ray, no multi-card reader and no wireless keyboard with numeric pad and only chip changes how is this an all new machine?
Thanks Apple for the power boost and price reduction but where are the additional features we were all waiting for?
Definitely a respectable jump in the right direction. While I certainly love OS X, I can’t shell out twice as much for an iMac as I did my custom built PC.
/sigh
Maybe next time…
Wow I like the new mac mini specs thanks BGR that’s good news to all of us mac mini lovers!!!!

Nothing too earth shaking here, but still nice updates.
Well i was looking foward to get a mac mini in the future and these new specs dont even start a spark in me. Not a big jump at all.
The economy can’t take a Mac Mini that didn’t lower the price some.
@BLackuLa, Not a big jump at all? lol, your kidding right? lets see, Bus speed went from 667Mhz to 1066MHz , Memory when from the average super slow that almost every PC come with DDR2 667 MHz to the new 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM, that’s not just a minor speed bump that’s a major one i think.
Blue Ray would have been a nice addition. I guess Sony’s JS Desktop Series is still looking like one of the best choices out there (Well, at least in my opinion). Affordable and well built; screen size isnt the best though. Okay, I’m rambling.
Agreed: blu-ray would have been nice. I am surprised that this is all we get considering how long it has been between refreshes. The video and RAM upgrade on the MacMini is nice.
Also, I have been disappointed by Apple’s lack of a numeric keyboard on a wireless keyboard. They had it in the past and then took it away: bring it back! I cannot imagine being at a desktop without a numeric keypad.
Yeah, but then again, these are meant to be refreshes, not like a huge major revision to these systems. Although I do think the memory and CPU upgrades in speed are very welcome additions
nice!
The changes to the Mac Mini may not be exciting, but it’s now a solid, viable product for the money. I’m glad they kept firewire.
one day imma gt money and buy one of this mac computer. i can only imagine spending 24 hrs non stop on my mac.
Lol@charles.
Yeah the mini Mac looks amazing and it pretty cheap compared to iMac.
The user experience is the best but price is a out of reach for many. I want the i-Phone and a Mac but cannot justify the price.
I’d want one of these a lot more if there were even a promised upgrade path to Blu Ray when Apple does see a viable way to integrate it.
If I spent $1500 on a Mac, I’d want to use it for at least 5 and hopefully 10 years. And yes, I think that’s possible given how fast computers are these days. But, without Blu-Ray, what’s the point?
Dam i would love to have a mac but the price is just a little out of my reach (yea right it’s a couple digits out of reach)
yea but still not a big jump i was looking for

I would really like the Mac but like everyone else I can’t justify the price of Apple products. I’m not saying there not worth it, they are but they should work with the consumer expeacially in these days. I bought the iPhone when it first came out for example and paid the $650. I’ve learned and will wait. I’m also with post under me. If I bought one I’ll want to use it for a long time.

A side-by-side comparison suggests the new iMacs match up favorably against Dell and HP’s All-in-One’s on a price-to-performance basis. For example, the $1,499 model has a faster CPU and RAM with better or comparable graphics, and is still $100-$250 cheaper (though it lacks a TV Tuner, ~$60-$100 upgrade).
So buy a Dull cheapo and suffer with Windows.
Does this mean that the event on March 24 is off or does this mean that Apple has more desktop news coming for all of us? Is it possibly the prosumer desktop that slots in between the mac-mini and the mac-pro that will allow me to use my cinema display? Or is it possibly a home media server?
As usual apple is overpricing there computers
@Mithranor, you think so? please show me a all in one machine that’s cheaper than the iMac with similar specs.
