BlackBerry Bold pulled from shelves in Japan

It looks like four bands of HSPA is too much for a BlackBerry to handle as Japanese carrier DoCoMo has suspended all sales of the Bold due to overheating issues. Since its February 20th launch, DoCoMo has sold approximately 4,000 Bolds but after receiving more than 30 complaints about overheating keypads while charging, DoCoMo decided it was best to halt sales while RIM investigates the matter. RIM is being quite tight-lipped on the matter and would only comment with, “This issue appears to be specifically limited to the BlackBerry Bold devices sold in Japan since last week and sales of BlackBerry Bold devices in other countries are unaffected by this matter.” RIM went on to clarify that faulty batteries are not to blame. For those of you scoring at home, this brings the number of carriers that have suspended sales of the Bold up to two thus far. Anyone taking bets on who might be the third?

BGR always hates on RIM. I just come here for the news, not their blatant Apple fanboyism in every blog post.

^Just how long have you been this self-deluded?

Nice to witness RIM (or Apple, for that matter) directly addressing the issue in a quick and priority manner. Most others mfrs live with their heads in the sand and couldn’t care less how deficient their phones are … as long as some tool is selling/promoting them.

Actually, if someone wants consistent reliable 3G, with a much broader coverage , Verizon or Sprint are the better choices. Despite what many iphone owners think, the industries “3G” network did not start with the iphone.

I agree with backbeat. As an HTC user, we’re still having issues with CDMA Sprint Touch Pro months after release. I think that doing this will make it a priority within RIM to fix the problem ASAP and start releasing more solid phones.

Once again the comparisons begin why don’t we just agree that berries and apples are two different fruits. And I agree BGR seems to be sucking off steve jobs. So much for intelligent unbias reporting this is the last time I go to this site for relevant information. Just change the name to AppleBottomBoyReport.

We had a Bold 9000 from AT&T overheat within the first 2 days of activating the device…. I don’t think it is limited to Japan.

    @David

Where was the comparison in this post? We’re simply reporting on a story (not a rumor) that some of the Bolds sold in Japan overheated.

I’m sorry, but we’re now around 8 months since the Bold first launched (almost two years after we first heard of it) and they still have physical hardware problems to the point of a carrier suspending sales? I mentioned this back in June and no one believed me about how it was going to be delayed on AT&T. RIM’s PR reps said I was lying.

How many times in the last year have you heard of a carrier suspending sales due to a potentially serious issue? Maybe three or four and two of those have been RIM devices.

No one is bashing anything, but come to the site with an open mind because we give credit where credit is due. And for RIM to not be able to get their shit together by this point in time with a device that has been in the works for over three years and released on almost every carrier under the sun by now is ridiculous. There’s no excuse.

When Apple’s iPhones heat up the point of almost catching fire, you can bet your ass we’ll cover it with a negative and smug tone.

    Thanks!

I will expand on this. I spend about ~13 minutes at my desk, everyday wondering why people come to a blog and bitch about biases. Who the f~ck cares whos biased to what, if you dont like it go somwhere else. I come here for the scoops, the good writing and sometimes to marvel at the idiots who continue grace this comment section. And for shame on BG for stooping to the idiots level and trying to educate him on just how stupid he is.

I have to mostly agree with BGR – for RIM to be having these types of issues this late in the game is ridiculous.

My Bold’s only problem is that its trackball’s getting a tad dirty. :P

    @ Informed
I am referring to 3G in General and not specific to wireless carriers. While 3G is great for tethering, how many ppl are actually going to sit there and download Youtube videos all day long. The 3G hype is over and I am glad that my company nor myself fell for the biggest marketing gimmick in telecom history. Berry’s are machines built for work and are far more efficient and reliable over EDGE. I prefer having EDGE over 3G for my needs and the 8900 simply kicks ass. Been two days and am like halfway down on the battery.

People, please don’t compliment RIM on pulling the device. It was DoCoMo that did. Just like it was Orange that pulled it six months ago. And it was ATT that delayed their launch, not RIM because of quality issues. RIM was actually pressuring ATT to put out the device much, much earlier.
