BlackBerry 9630 is the Niagara, Verizon World Edition?

So… we’ve just got word from a really trusted source, dropping bombs all around on the BlackBerry “Niagara”. First off, the model number we’re told is the BlackBerry 9630, not 8930 or 9030, or anything like that. Second, the phone will definitely be a Verizon World Edition with support for CDMA 1x, EV-DO Rev. A, GSM, GPRS, EDGE, and UMTS, though we’d bet the UMTS band is going to be 2100MHz only. The last of the big news won’t surprise any Verizon-haters, but this bad beast is not going to have Wi-Fi. Oh man, they never learn, do they? To recap everything for you slow pokes:

  • The OS actually we’re told is 4.7.1 (but possibly, possibly, be OS 5.0 depending on launch date).
  • No Wi-Fi.
  • Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support along with WCDMA support (bands not specified, but most likely 2100MHz).
  • CDMA 1x/EV-DO Rev. A device.
  • Release date unknown, but we’d say May/June if we had to bet.
  • 3.2 megapixel camera (though we heard a rumor there might be a camera-less version, but that’s unconfirmed).
  • The web browser supports JavaScript 1.6 (not huge news, but at least the browser is slowly improving).

Now how many of you are going to buy one of these things when they are released? We think a whole lot of people are.

^If you’re looking for a feature phone, don’t waste your time with Blackberry. You’ll only be back here or elsewhere whining about how much it sucks. If you need a Blackberry for business or to keep life, multiple calendars, and email fully organized and want to take in an occasional flick or playing tunes, stay with Blackberry.

The iPhone nor the Pre will be on other carriers than those already contracted.

You guy’s are clueless to what is going on. Name one cdma blackberry with wifi, from sprint or verizon. There is none, now count how many cdma blackberrys that have 3g. Its not Verizon its rim. The bold is the first gsm blackberry that has wifi and 3g. Before that Att did not have 1 3g blackberry while verizon and sprint been having them for years now (yes EVDO is 3g). So for you to blame verizon is wrong. And since Verizon bought out alltel the 3g map has grown alot, especially down here in the south. Now Verizon has the largest native voice and 3g network.

For those who are ripping on Verizon for not having wifi on their blackberries. Here’s a newsflash! NO CDMA BLACKBERRIES HAVE EVER HAD WIFI! You’ll find the same situation over at Sprint, US Cellular, or any other CDMA carrier. Try complaining to/about RIM.

^Each carrier specs the phone from each manufacturer according to what they are willing to support or disallow. Even though one may be able to obtain an unlocked (obviously GSM-variant, in this example) of a phone that allows full WiFi and/or 3G access, once a carrier subsidizes it, those abilities can simply vanish. That’s the hard truth.

There is no way to get a GSM device on a CDMA carrier and right now only Metro PCS is flashing. WiFi is pretty much moot unless it is GSM because they don’t have the same 3G footprint. The CDMA carriers do have WiFi devices they happen to be from other manufacturers unless you count the IDEN Curve

The 9630 has been confirmed to have WI-FI from another source. I do certainly hope BG is incorrect on this, but everything is still up in the air at this point. Hopefully this thing makes it out within the next month or so.

^^Who ever suggested that one could have a GSM phone operate on a CDMA network? Tilting at windmills or so lonely that you must create (another) nonexistant argument?

Relate this, how is any carrier going to subsidized an unlocked device and make it loose wifi after you bought it? There are no unlocked CDMA phones, they can be flashed though so that’s why I made that reference.

Take any AT&T or T-mobile dirt phone with Wi-fi and compare it to any Verizon smart phone..The wi-fi phones will kick its butt 10 times out of 10.

I don’t care how good you or verizon think its network is, it is not nor will it ever be faster than wi-fi. Its probably faster than any GSM carrier 3G, but not wi-fi. Stop drinking the freaking cool aid, i had a storm and it would take 10 minutes to render a page when i was out and about, it only had decent speed when i was at home..

10 minutes is a long time and the Storm is a bad example, not disputing the speed of wifi just saying DOr0 and DOrA are fast too with a bugfree device

Wi-fi shouldn’t be a dealbreaker if you are on Verizon…with a blackberry, you have to pay for a data plan anyway. I am definitely getting this when it comes out! Until then my curve will keep everything straight!

WiFi is not a big deal for verizon phones anymore. You have to get the Data package with the phone so you can always use the REV A service and a little rumor is that by the end of the year Verizon will be the first company in the US with a 4G network.

Yeah, it only makes sense that Verizon won’t give its customers Wi-Fi access. Why give us something they can’t really charge for? But man, I’ve been squirming ever since the Bold came out for a CDMA version of a next-gen berry (no, the storm doesn’t exist in my eyes).

I will definitely be waiting on line for this phone. 7290–8703–8830–8703(broke my world in frustration)–9630. YEAH BOYEEE

I currently have T-Mobile with a BB that has wifi and quite frankly, I never use it. Unless you have a wifi router devise at home, I have no desire to spend hours sitting at a Starbucks or Borders just to use the bloody wifi. I get by with Edge. Considering jumping over to Verizon in May when my contract is up, and the Niagara with what it has sounds fine. Was considering the Storm at one point, but with some of the problems & complaints…not to mention it’s fatter and heavier, will wait for the Niagara.
