Cortado SMS2Desk: Send and receive BlackBerry texts with your computer

Call us crazy, but one of the worst things about sitting around all day writing about tech happens when we’re in the middle of posting a story, chatting to ninjas on AIM, firing off emails left, right and center and then BOOM — a flurry of text message arrives on our BlackBerrys, making us jump out of our seats, run over to our gadget charging station and check what all of the fuss is about. So can you imagine our relief the other day when we were wading through the insane amount of PR emails we get and found something from Cortado about a BlackBerry application called SMS2Desk. By way of a small application installed on your BlackBerry, SMS2Desk forwards all of your texts to an email address so you can read them and reply right on your computer. The best part is that SMS2Desk is totally free unless you feel like making a one-time payment of €4.98 ($6.27 USD) for a premium version that allows you to: send multiple texts from within one email, forward and save all texts to an email account of your choosing, limit your outgoing texts (useful if you don’t have an unlimited text plan) and receive email confirmations for each sent text. Excited as we are?

So does it count as a text or an email when you receive it? If it counts as an email then it looks like us BlackBerry users can shed the unlimited texting plans and just hang onto the data plans… But that’s probably not the case.

can’t seem to get this working on my VZW Curve. For some reason their customer service number says “all lines are busy” and then directs me to “your call cannot be completed as dialed.” There was a previous program similar to this but it only worked on GSM berries. Maybe it’s the same case here.

This has been around forever on WinMo and S60, and without annoying email forwarding. *Yawn*

I’ve always thought it would be relatively simple for RIM to develop an App or addin to the Desktop Manager enabling your BB homescreen on your desktop – that way all PINs, BBMs and texts would show up on your desktop – even spoke to someone who works there about it…got little more than a shrug.

Congrats to you ‘Berryheads. Yes, Windows Mobile and Symbian S60 have had this already but it’s good to see functionality like this inching closer to the mainstream.

This doesn’t work on my att blackberry 8310. Cannot enable the program. This seems like a common problem. Has anyone actually gotten this to work?

I got it to enable fine. But when I receive a SMS, a get one copy in my curve mailbox and another copy in my curve sms box (i.e., two copies of the same message). And when I reply, strangely, the reply sms doesnt go to the original sender, but rather, to myself! I thus end up with two copies of the response text and the original sender gets no response. Totally whacked – and unfortunately the help section on their website is less than sparse.

I also got it to enable fine on an 8120. Incoming SMSs are copied to my mail inbox, but replying to the email (with [SMS]+number in the subject header) does not route the message to the original sender. I don’t know if it matters, but I’m sending from a Gmail account, rather than from a dedicated blackberry address. So it seems to provide an SMS archiving solution, but not a way of using an email gateway to avoid SMS charges.

I got charged a text messaging fee for each email sent out as a text!
I thought the idea was to avoid the text messaging cost!
