App Stores apps are one month wonders?

According to the same media research group that brought us the evidence of a brand new iPhone stretching its legs on the internet, a free application downloaded from Apple’s App Store has a less than 5 percent chance of being used for more than 30 days. In fact, only 20 percent of free applications are used on more than one occasion signaling that – surprise, surprise – the App Store is filled with copious amounts of crap. As for paid applications, many assume a fee equates to higher quality and content compared to a free application. Paid apps seemingly do not stand the test of time very well either however, and shockingly are less likely to be used multiple times than a free application. Aside from the adding random facts to that very special part of the brain that often scores free drinks at the bar, these statistics prove an important fact for developersツ — free, ad-supported applications are not a good way to earn a buck despite the alluring CPM payments. To quote Pinch Media, “Unless there’s something inherent about the app that screams free, sell it.”

    I don’t think it’s necessarily fair to compare the quantity of apps between the bb’s and the iphone.

    The iphone was designed in a way that apps are core to its fuction. Apps are what really drives interest in an iphone.
    On the other hand, apps are not what drives or attracts users to a Blackberry, it is other features.

    I’m not an app developer, but I think the fact that the iphone is only one device makes it a lot more encouraging for ppl to create apps on an iphone because every user is exposed to it. However there are so many different models of Blackberries, it makes it more of a chore to create different versions for every model if that is the developers intention.

    @Evilhomer
    By saying “less than half” I didn’t literally mean a specific number. I was just stating the obvious. As for your RIM comparison, not once did I mention RIM in my comment so why bring it up? However, I guess if you are going to bring other phone venders into this why just RIM? Why not Moto.. or LG? Why don’t they have an app store??? Why just down RIM (knowing that RIM actually has one in the works and the other venders – not so much)? Point is, my comment had nothing to do with RIM or BB’s. It was strictly about the iphone’s app store. And I stand by my comment/opinion, I’d rather have 1,000 quality/useful apps to chose from than having 20,000 to choose from and only 1,000 being useful. Buuuut, that’s just me.
