Firstly, a disclaimer: I do own and am using the Sidekick LX 2009 to type this blog. For the past 4 years, I have had sidekicks and am an avid user of them. I started out with the SKII and upgraded to the 3. Now then…on to the good stuff. The LX2009 is a new phone that pretty much grabs the best things from the previous phones and have some of the bad stuff. Firstly, I must say that the web browser is pretty much the same as the others. I was abit disappointed that Sharp and T-Mobile did not come up with a more convenient and easier to use web browser, but I guess they believe it’s been tried and tested and it still performs admirably, considering it seems to be using an aging browser. Adding 3G to this newer phone really has made it one for the modern times that can compete reasonably with other net capable qwerty keyboard phones out there. When I had initially received my first sidekick (SK2), my internet didn’t work when I was on the phone, now it seems fiinally I can make a call and be online at the same time and doesn’t degrade the web surfing quality. It’s by far the most surprising thing on this phone, given my experience with other sidekicks. The appstore leaves something to be desired as I had a lot more applications, but I guess it comes with time. The slimness makes the phone really look sexy and alluring while it is still large enough to not get lost (for long at least) in your pocket. The screen and resolution are better compared to the last sidekicks, however the larger screen has already confused most people by thinking it must be a touchscreen. T-Mobile should look into this for their next version. When I’d first received the phone, I was disappointed with the matte keyboard, but I figured that should they have kept the sidekick 3 buttons it would have rendered the phone heavier, less sleek and probably cost more. I must say, however that I’m an avid user of my phone in all kinds of weather and having this kind of keyboard helps keep water out of the machine if weather’s bad. the video on the phone is okay, at best, and I dislike the fact the video doesn’t zoom and currently I haven’t heard audio with the video. I have some unpleasantness with T-Mobile because although I can youtube, the resolution isn’t very good and at this stage in the game, with iPhone, Instinct and blackberry, they really should’ve had the video in browser capability and not only with youtube videos. I absolutely love the lights and colour schemes that the LX2009 comes with, makes it look good. The battery life for this sidekick is still appalling, but I can fully understand given the capabilities of this phone. During a full day, 7am-7pm, you can make calls watch a few vids and use the “Track Me” feature on the LiveSearch GPS, but I will suggest, keep a charger in your car or work, it’ll have you a lot less frustrated for when you really need a call. In all honesty, I don’t use it for calls much, but the call quality had disturbed me a lot on the first day I received the phone, but it has become better (upgrade maybe?). All in all, it’s a sleek looking phone that does what it’s supposed to. I like it because the keyboard is a lot more tangible than other touchscreen phones, and having extended use of the blackberry storm and Instint, I much prefer the simplicity of a mounted keyboard that’s most familiar like a computer’s. The self-contained email is brilliant and they have made it easier (I suspect microsoft helped) to fetch email from other services.
Last but definitely not least, this phone has picture messaging, and I must say it’s been done brilliantly. This is by far one of the best features that weren’t available on the previous phones. It has audio postcard capability and it requires a bit of manoeuvering, so unless you’re brilliant, you’ll have less embarrassing pictures that were mass sent by your drunken mr hyde at last night’s party. One thing I wish T-Mobile could change is the phone lock codes. Given enough time (like a day or so) one could crack the measly 1000 combinations possible for the 3 digit codes. All in all, it’s a pretty good phone and since it has already been established, can greatly improve it’s market if some time and revamping is done. Good phone with great features and the 1 GB memory card isn’t bad either, but getting more memory, better browser and more power would give the sidekick to being a hero instead of a sidekick.

I don’t understand why non-sidekick users say this is a kids phone (writting this with sidekick 08). I don’t know 1 kid and not a much older person needs with email on their phone. To me it is the same as a blackberry but with a young kool sleek style. I personally use my sidekick in a variety of ways (talk, messaging, email, entertainment). So the phone is going to be better with the new added apps. If people gave it a chance, they would see it is a very useful phone.

I think its funny all the people that call this a kids phone, but keep in mind, the iphone and blackberry were based on the sidekick technology. So anyone claiming this is a piece of junk should hold on, use one and then judge. I had the sidekick and i was really impressed with it, traded it for a touch screen but the sidekick is a great base phone.

Ha Bunch Of Haters Hating On The Sidekick I See A Bunch Of Yous Haters are gonna See That Phone in The Future & Ask To Hold It I Bet Lol Yea It Kinda Lookz Like A 08 & Lx Mixed the screen is kinda thin looking & it looks like its goin 2 be the 1st of 2 sidekicks to come I Believe this because this lookz like the size of lx so there gonna want 2 also make a smaller 1 for the crowds who likes the smaller sidekicks kinda like what they did with the slide so I believe they’ll be another kick out & honestly I’ve been sidekick since day 1 b4 the banwagon & every1 was still making phone calls & the only thing that I think was missing was the ability to watch videos now we got it & navigation that’s a plus(if it Has it)

I actually got to hold this phone when a program developer came into where I work and showed it to me. It’s pretty thin, the UI has gotten some nice tweaks, and it just feels…right. Or at least a nice step in the right direction.

personally i dont like it ill stick to my LX(brown) or my black iphone3g.they really dont need 2 change the ui because all the true sidekick fans are used to the current look..just my idea but what do i kno im just the age group the phone is marketed for =]

Personally I love my sidekick I’ve had a slide , tried the O8 & now im using the lx . Its a great simple phone to use nothing is complicated about it . I can’t wait to see the next sk they come out with. Its better then any other t-mobile phone.

I have had all the sidekicks and currently I am going with the LX. I also have the Blackberry Bold, the 2nd generation I Phone and the G1…I simply like different things about each of these phones. The Sidekick LX has a great screen, the best keyboard in the world, a browser that gets me on any site and my stuff is backed up just in case by Danger. I am looking forward to the new model and going on 3 G… Just remember, all the phones I have are nice in their own ways however, when one is total wireless as I am…none of these phones have the power pack to keep me happy if I were to have just one of them alone! I guess cause I am an old guy!

I love it.. Im reading all these people bashing the “kick” on here but they have no idea how useful this fone is..First off your grandmother can pick this fone up and start using its really simple device to pick up and use..I also never had a problem with this device locking up or freezing on me..the thing is this device is for the text junky..I’ve had a kick since my freshmen yr in hs and I wont let it go, also the reason for hiptop not changing the style of the sidekick.. is a lil thing called image “branding” if this device was anything different it wouldnt be a sidekick anymore..

It would just be another typical cellphone.

I cant wait to get my hands on this.

Not bad, I have had the SKc SKII and the SKLX. I have been on the sidekick platform for so long I can not see myself leaving it anytime soon.

The new phone looks good like an improvement, and with 3g and turn by turn! So good on ya Danger, keep putting out the sk’s and I will keep buying them, just give me a nice touch screen someday and open up the catalog just a little.

Oh yeah and for all of you that think its a kids phone, its not. I am 30 next month ugg, and I have several friends that have sk’s.

I saw this thing the other day. It’s the same stuff-same ugly aesthetic from 1999. No real improvements here , just an instant messenger app with a chassis.
It’s really ugly-a real mashup of bizarre ID. FAIL.

Are you expecting it to be a smart phone? Get real! It’s a messaging phone, will always be THE messaging phone. I’d love to get the SKs America get here in the UK as I really really like the phone.

I personally wouldn’t get it. To me T-mobile sidekicks have gone down hill since the LX. The 08′ is extremely small, the slide is like the forgotten adoptive child, they need to go back to the blueprint stage and start over. Don’t get me wrong I love sidekicks, its everything I personally need all-in-one but after the LX the fones just all look the same now, no originiality.

I also don’t get why people like to bash the sidekick. It’s a lot simpler to use than a Blackberry and the OS doesn’t lag at all. Blackberrys won’t automatically back-up your apps, email, notes, calendar, tasks, pictures, etc. like a Sidekick will. The Sidekick also gives you direct-push email, a much better keyboard and easier multi-tasking. I just hope that this isn’t the only Sidekick that will be released this year. I don’t care about 3g. I NEED a Sidekick with UMA in my basement apartment. Everywhere else I go I’m fine for reception.

Yeah dude, people bash this phone so much but again, the thing with this phone is the audience it is marketed for. It’s for teens to young adults, or for people who like an interesting looking phone with plenty of convenience and simplicity packaged all in one. The great thing about Sidekicks might also be the worst thing about them, and that’s that yeah, they have been using the SAME OS for a couple years now, but, it does what it’s supposed to do and it does it very well I m ight add. Also, the Danger Back-End service is great for backing up all data on your device and it does have one of the most solid keyboards and messaging clients out to date and that’s saying A LOT especially considering this has been an EDGE phone until just recently ! So, yeah those are my 2 cents.

Because if you look closer, the light blue keys also have a second function of the numbers 1,2,3 and so up to number 9. Also, the last three serve as second function to *,0,and #.

My friend works for TMobile, and she said it’s coming out during the SUMMER. I never really asked her about it because i thought she wouldn’t know just like any other tmobile rep; some are clueless. But then we were talking about phones and she said the TMOBILE MEMOIR is coming out on FEB 25 and the SIDEKICK 2009 in the summer; her boss told her. so if the memoir date is correct, there’s a possibility the date for the sidekick is also right.

Oh here we go with the sidekick is for kids thing. Yes im 20 and I have an LX. The LX is far from a kids phone, there are plenty of other phones that look like they came from fisher price or something. And the Sidekick 3 is crap compared to any of the new sidekicks. The screen alone makes any new sidekick better then the 3.

The bowser hardly sucks, so I don’t know where that’s coming from. I can go on any site and I never have a problem with it. Yes its kinda slow at times but its edge, what do you expect. Lets see, camera works fine, takes pictures that look good so no problem there. Video could use some work but this was the first sidekick with video so there’s a few kinks.

All of our stuff is backed up with Danger so I never have to worry about loosing my information. Plus I can use Dangers Interface online and update my contacts, calender, and notes straight from my computer. I can hook up all my emails straight to my phone. The LX has one of the best keyboards out there (writing this all from my LX), and this keyboard looks like its the same, so that’s a plus. Hmm, what else? There is a shortcut for every part of the phone. I can press the menu + letter and go to any place I want on the phone. The apps could be better but I know mynewsroom app is great for all my rss feeds.

Now with the extra features this is getting, 3G, GPS, higher resolution and who knows what else. Everyone saying this is nothing to even talk about doesn’t know what there talking about.
