Verizon Wireless drops Samsung Omnia to $99

It’s a buyers market for prospective smartphone owners with prices on mobile phones dropping like a stone. Last weekend, the BlackBerry Storm fell to $99 on Amazon and this weekend the price for Verizon’s Samsung Omnia has fallen to $99.99 directly from its website. This price includes a $70 online-only discount and will of course require a 2-year contract. The Omnia on a 1-year contract has been lowered as well – to $169 – while the full retail price of the phone remains an astonishingly high $559. Those interested in the Omnia should head on over to Verizon’s website sooner rather than later as we do not know if this price reduction is permanent or only temporary. Happy Omnia shopping!

Thanks, Austin!

This is my point of view on this issue- Verizon might as well have written this policy as “Customers who would like to use a Smartphone on our network must pay $30 per month”. I’m not paying it. Using the WiFi feature to browse the Web at a WiFi access point is all I need. This is BS and seems like a questionable business practice and certainly not in the consumer’s best interest. If you agree, please go to the Verizon Wireless site “Contact Us” page to log a complaint. If enough people voice their complaint, we can pressure Verizon to drop this mandatory data plan requirement. They seem to be responding to all submitted emails.

I ordered the omnia by phone from a sales rep who said I could get the Pay-As-You-Go data rate (only after I did some complaining as many of you appear to be doing in this thread.) Got the phone, enjoyed it, would totally recommend it. Then I noticed she signed me up for the 10MB/per month $24.99 data plan. Now, it’s fine with me that Verizon wants to cut out the PDA-only customers by making us buy a data plan too, but lying about it to make a sale? I used to really like Verizon’s customer service and would always recommend them for being accomodating and reliable, but this move is just too much.

For me it is the 5.0 MP camera I am most interested in with video recording capability. Don’t need a data plan for that. Also, the WiFi would be icing which also doesn’t require the data plan. I do realize that unfortunately VZW must make their $ on this phone somehow, but I would rather not have the data plan myself.

Hey guys, I checked out Sprint. I ended up with the HTC Touch Pro at a great discount. They have an unlimited calling, text, and data plan for $99. After checking all the providers available to me, Sprint blew them all away!

I just ordered this machine today – free and free shipping. I don’t think the required $30 pachage is exhorbinant. I’m paying $45/mo now for a cell phone only and for all the utility the phone will provide internet-wise I don’t feel too bad about shelling out the extra 30. I’d be po’d if i wanted to access the web and wasn’t in wifi location. Kind of defeats the purpose, I think. What DOES piss me off is they have locked up the gps to only work with their stupid VS Navigator at $10/mo. Now THAT is a rip-off! Can anyone tell me is it pretty much impossible to bust the gps out to use with gmaps or another free nav service? Sure hope i like this phone, but if not – bang! back within 30 days!

with regards to wifi on the omnia I found it interesting that the description on the verizon site said wifi capable but other phones indicated wifi enabled. So, I asked at the store and after the manager disappeared for awhile they came back and basically started to talk about how wifi would not work for me on the omnia. This was 2 days ago. The week before I had been in the store and the guy was lauding the wifi capabilities. Has anyone heard about changes in wifi with the omnia? I told the manager that I wanted a phone with wifi and they flat out said not to buy the omnia if that was my criteria. I then asked if they were disabling it and the guy just walked off.

    Anyone have any insights?

Smart phones were built for internet, period. If you can’t afford the data plan, you obviously don’t need a smart phone, you need a job. A real job.

madgully your a fuckwad — several people have listed the reasons they don’t need the data plan but your to stuckin fupid to read evidently — among those reasons is it has a 5 meg camera which is more than most every other camphone and some people would prefer one device over 2 to lug around – not everyone has excess cash to spend because their living with mom ya assbrain.

Bungfinger, you make me laugh! Seriously, you’re a sweetheart. I havnt lived with my mom for a while, seeing as I’m 35. Perhaps I just have a different outlook on telecom and wireless in general because I’m a telco business consultant and work closely with carriers and manufacturers. And yes, no matter how you feel about it, PDA’s are built for internet, period. That’s a fact. Whether or not a carrier forces you to pay for internet, is a business decision made by that carrier. Also, judging by 1st quarter results, ATT and Verizon are making a lot of money selling PDAs to people who NEED them and can afford them. Data is how wireless generates profit nowadays, they don’t make a dime selling phones, as they sell them on consignment for the manufacturer. I think if people understood the wireless business model, it would make sense as to why “they have to get internet”

Some of you douce bags telling people to get a job should stop being so fucking arrogant. I make a damn good living, well into six figures, and don’t like paying out extra cash. Quit whining about what other people are saying and stay on subject.

For me it’s worth paying for the data plan, as my job is running an exchange server and I need a pda with Windows Mobile to sync my email/contacts/calendar. I already have the LG Dare and this is basically the same thing with a better camera, and Windows mobile. Hopefully I like it. I love the Dare so I should be happy with this.

good news everyone…well i got a 2-year contract with verizon like 7 months agor. i got the omnia (totally love and recomend it =]) i was required to pay for data package. i let two month go by and told them i had lost the omnia so i activated an old verizon phone i had, they took of the data plan because the old phone was very outdated, the following day i activated the omnia once again by dialing 288. it’s been 5 months now and i think i fooled them good because so far they havent find out…i do not pay the 30 bucks for the data plan … =] you guys can at least give it a try, it worked fot me!

You can break out the GPS on the Omnia i910… it takes about 2-3 minutes for it to sync with satellites, but it’s accurate to about 20 feet. Alternatively, you can get a bluetooth GPS unit, and it will be much more accurate and faster, but the internal is good enough for driving directions and even geocaching… It gets more accurate in pedestrian mode.

Check out Modaco forums for how to break out the GPS… takes a bit of registry hacking, but it works great… the only thing I can say that is fricken horrible about this phone is texting on the keyboard in any mode…
