Verizon Wireless drops Samsung Omnia to $99

It’s a buyers market for prospective smartphone owners with prices on mobile phones dropping like a stone. Last weekend, the BlackBerry Storm fell to $99 on Amazon and this weekend the price for Verizon’s Samsung Omnia has fallen to $99.99 directly from its website. This price includes a $70 online-only discount and will of course require a 2-year contract. The Omnia on a 1-year contract has been lowered as well – to $169 – while the full retail price of the phone remains an astonishingly high $559. Those interested in the Omnia should head on over to Verizon’s website sooner rather than later as we do not know if this price reduction is permanent or only temporary. Happy Omnia shopping!

Thanks, Austin!

Hm, I have to say, this is rather shocking, considering that a few weeks back they were still selling the ancient Treo 700wx at $299 on contract… I wonder what’s changed, this seems like a pretty good deal.

The price drop is not permanent. It’s part of a Samsung promotion that starts today and will go for about 45 days for all Samsung phones.

Perhaps they are adjusting the prices to account for the revenue gained by the mandatory data plans? BB’s on Verizon have been really cheap for a while now.

But that would just be too nice of them…

them boys probably aren’t selling to well. they might be trying to unload them while they still can in lue of that omnia hd/acme billboard news. I must admit I had been waiting for a cdma version of the omnia for a while, but when it finally arrived @ verizon there were so many new phones in the works I figured I’d wait it out….. can’t wait to see what shakes @ the mwc…. that is a deal though….

Maybe Verizon is finally realizing that people don’t want to pay a lot of money to buy a locked down “smart”phone with no wifi and then pay a lot more money for their mandatory data plan.

Wow, some pretty interesting moves being made by VW. The Omnia is a pretty nice phone for suure! but eh, not nice enough for this student to drop a three digit amount on it. But do have at it VW peeps! Great deal if you’ve never had a smartphone!

This just in Scott: The Omnia has wi-fi! In fact many smartphones from VZW have wi-fi! I know you will say “what about Blackberries then?” but you won’t realize no CDMA carrier has a BB w/ wi-fi. It is ok. Keeping taking what you read on a message board as fact. Much easier to bash!

I realize the mandatory data plan for some suck. But really most people get it anyway, regardless of carrier. And if it means VZW phones will be that much cheaper then go for it. VZW has some of the lowest prices for phones (excluding HTC and Palm (who buys Palm anymore? the upcoming Pre excluded) and that is crazy I agree) and you consider AT&T plans cost the same and it is a good value. Sure Sprint might be a better value after the two years (no arguing from me) but no one else is a better value. TMO has almost no 3G and AT&T plans are the same w/ much less 3G. And don’t give the unlocked phone argument b/c those arent cheap and negates value. I do like the option, but it doesnt increase value. But BOGO on BB and $99 Omnia is a great deal. Imagine AT&T had Omnia for the price. What smart ass comment would you have then?

    @ fan_of_fanboys,

    Doesn’t Sprint/Nextel’s Curve 8350i have Wi-Fi?

Ya I would presume that this means that the leaked acme i8910 that has been seen as the Omnia HD on billboards could be coming to Verizon soon.
Am I alone in this thinking?

Isn’t the Acme/Omnia HD a Symbian device? Those never seem to come to the US, and certainly not Verizon. Of course, it’s not impossible I suppose- VZW did get the original Omnia, and seems to be pretty close to Samsung.

Ha ha @ the clueless idiot talking smack about no wifi when all the windows mobile except the curve at verizon offer wifi.

And do you want to know why this phone is so cheap?
    Becuase it SUCKS.
Its not just like kinda sucky, its major effin fail falling on a hand grenade of fail.

Freezes up, under ppowered, and lame as hell windows mobile is slapped on it instead of the quality samsung interface that is on it in the rest of the world. The camera sucks, the wifi sucks, the touch screen isn’t multitouch, and the accelerometer is slow and flat out stupid.

    That sums it up
Oh, and ALL samsung devices are 50% off, feature phones like the glyde, alias and sway as well.

    Esquire0399 says:

@notHTCkid: Are you not aware that the Omnia runs Windows Mobile in ALL parts of the world? Where on Earth did you hear otherwise? I strongly suggest you check your facts in the future. In addition, Wi-Fi works fine, the accelerometer is not slow, and very, VERY few touchscreen devices have multitouch so this cannot be considered a problem with the Omnia. Where are you getting your information?

Damn, can we get a troll filter or something on this site. Uninformed people are always the first to point out nonexistent flaws and they have no place here.

thank you in aiding me in my quest to bring knowledge to those who can’t read

word on the street is VZW will have the 1st wi-fi bb, the pearl flip. but IF (I don’t know) that happens then haters will find a way to bring that down. start planning now.

I heard this phone sucked, but now the proof. It was only released in December I believe and already it is half price; even if that is temporary that’s still a bad sign.

What’s being overlooked by all the “kiddies without a klue” is that the US is in a depression and a delicate balance between low-cost and high-value has to exist for companies to remain solvent.

the reason it is so cheap is because its subsidized. the retail value isnt down!
take a look at what it cost retail without a two year agreement!
its been out internationally for almost a year and its still VERY expensive retail!
this is a powerful phone for power users.

I think WinMo sucks personally but this phone got positive reviews by most everyone. If a GSM carrier had this phone and put it on sale it would be an amazing deal. VZW does it and the phone sucks.
