It's sad really, when you think about it. The less people spend in their local communities, the more likely people dependent on that money are going to lose their jobs. Which means they're going to spend less, which means more people are going to lose jobs. It's cyclic. And it's a sad reality. Maybe this is the end of mass consumerism, and the start of a more fiscally responsible America less dependent on credit. It's exciting to think of how the psychology of people is going to change based on these circumstances. To quote Eddie Vedder "it's EVOLUTION BABY!"
