Lego and Alcatel teaming up to release Lego phone

Earlier this year Lego and Digital Blue announced combined efforts that would yield a variety of Lego-centric electronics aimed at kids. Slated to be released by this Summer, the announcement included details on a digital camera, a walkie talkie and an MP3 player – nothing too crazy. These functional toys would appear as though they had been built from lego bricks and would all fall into an affordable $20 – $60 price range. Cool. An anonymous tipster may have just shined some light on a yet-to-be-announced element of this partnership however, that might bump the endeavor’s interest-factor from a 1.1 to an even 2. As you can see from the image above, Alcatel is apparently jumping into the mix and the trio is planning to make their best effort at putting cell phones in the hands of children at an even more inappropriately young age. Woo! From the looks of things, the Lego phone will consist of a base structure containing the body and display of the handset, while a series of modular attachments can be snapped on – likely just for color variation as opposed to changing the functionality of the handset to some extent. Little else is know at this point but we’ll be sure to update you as soon as possible so you don’t lose too much sleep over it. Hit the jump for a bigger shot showing off more modular pieces.

The Lego addiction I had as a kid is kicking in again. Want. Now.
Why would a child of lego target age need a cell phone? This is retarded!
damn. i am totally getting one of these!!
AWWEEESSSSOOOOOMMMMMMEEEEEEE!!!!
If you have to ask then you obviously aren’t the target market. Some people collect Lego stuff so this would be great for them. I myself, think toy trains are just for kids, but toy trail collector clubs are FILLED with old people who love them just as much.
I wanted it now!!
I’m totally digging it!
Alcatel isnt even in the USA, no worries us ever getting one….
BUT….
If it comes with changeable face plates, then Im all for it.
Gives a new definition to the term “Brick Phone”.
fail
This sooo cute for Moms and teachers! Even better than the Sesame Street checks!
Great idea but the execution is very poor – taking the LEGO brand at such a face value and seemingly no consideration for compatibility with LEGO core products- a missed opportunity for endless ‘play’ , universal appeal, extended personalisation and limitless opportunities, hmmm
@Bdizzah
I work in a cell phone store and parents buy phones for kids who are 8 years old. Their reason? “I need to keep track of where my kid is”.
What kind of irresponsible-ass parent can’t keep track of their 8 year old kid!? More importantly, what parent let’s their 8 year old be parented thru a cell phone. People nowadays are so stupid and consumerist. Its why the economy is so messed up, families with $200 cell phone bills for phones they don’t need. They buy what tv tells them to buy. No kid needs a cell phone and no parent should ever not watch their kid like a hawk. Its why our society is as F’d up as it is.
Next thing u know we’re gonna be putting bluetooth headsets on new borns and toddlers. We really need to ease up as a society and focus on deciphering the true difference between needs and wants. Corporations and their CEOs are laughing all the way to the bank with your money, and then usuing your tax $ to prop themselves back up. Let’s go back to the days of purchasing what we need, and a few wants. Cell phones are not necessities. They never were or ever will be.
Doesn’t work with actual Lego blocks, so what’s the point? It’s basically a swatch-phone.
Besides, I for one can’t wait to be driving on the highway and be sideswiped by some idiot whose faceplate fell off their year-old Lego-phone while they were driving. -.-
Will they sell it toys r us
Children with cell phones is something I try to steer clear of… But seriously- if this phone actually offered serious capabilities, I would TOTALLY buy it. I LOVE legos! I will most definitely keep my eye out for this to see how it develops… I’ll be disappointed if it is created for the sole purpose of being for kids (i.e. parent control features like only can have 8 phone numbers programmed into it and other restrictions)…
Just what kindergardeners need, a phone with loseable parts… well Kindergardeners dont fucking need phones to start with.. But i guess if people are dumb enough to get there elementry school child a blackberry, im sure they will get them a second line with a lego phone.
*Sigh*
Can’t we just talk about the Palm Pre?
what do you mean alcatel is not in the us. Who do you think is supplying big red with LTE, beside being prob the secound largest enterprise supplier of network hardware. Sooner or later there will be an ALU phone in our hands.
LEGO target age??? I am 24 and love LEGO items more now than I ever did as a child. I would absolutely buy this phone.
I want to go to there…
OMFG… Swatch! Now there is a name I had hoped to never hear again. I was in school when the swatch madness hit. Never did get it, thought they were pretty useless.
There is no company called Alcatel now. Since late 2007, there has only been Alcatel-Lucent. Check any Alcatel website and it will direct to Alcatel-Lucent.
Cellphones aren’t even in the product portfolio anymore!
